The Army has released the Q&A for the Camouflage Improvement Effort solicitation.
The owner’s of Wilmingon, North Carolina’s Flaming Amy’s Burrito Barn and Flaming Amy’s Bowl, Jay and Amy Muxworthy recently began sellng shelf-stable versions of their salsas so that they could offer them to troops deployed to Afghanistan and Iraq free of charge.
From their website:
The inspiration for Operation Salsa Drop came through social networking. Flaming Amy’s Facebook page has over 7,000 “fans” from all over the globe. On April 17th 2010, we received a followup comment on a post we had made about our salsas. Army private Justin Young, who was serving at Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan, jokingly asked if we could ship some salsa to him. We told him that if we could figure out a way to get it there, we would happily ship him enough to feed an Army. And so Operation Salsa Drop began.
OSD has three varieties of salsa to choose from:
“Fire in the Hole!†– Flaming Hot Salsa
“Shock ‘N’ Awesome†– Pineapple Jalapeno Salsa
“TARFU†– Traditional Tomato
All three salsas are packaged in 12oz glass jars and are being sold for $4.50 each. All proceeds from the retail sales go towards production and distribution of these same salsas to the boots on the ground in Afghanistan and Iraq. Our goal is to ship one jar to a soldier for every jar sold!

With the West coast version behind us, ADS has just announced the opening of registration for Warrior Expo East July 14 & 15 in Virginia Beach. If you missed Warrior West, you have got to make it to this expo comprising over 190 manufacturers and an anticipated attendance of over 1,500. Plus, there’s a big surprise in store. ADS has invited General Stanley McChrystal to serve as keynote speaker. Check out the video for an invite from the man himself.
I have attended Warrior East for the past two years and both shows have proven very rewarding. Additionally, I was lucky enough to participate in last week’s Warrior West, and even though the defense budget is still in flux, there was a lot of energy in both industry and Mil/Gov. The war isn’t over. Operations are ongoing and folks on both sides of the coin were really focused on solving problems with real solutions. It is fascinating to watch this happen in person.
This isn’t a show for tire kickers. Warrior Expo is intended for customers, partners, suppliers, manufacturers, military, federal, state and/or local government agencies, law enforcement and first responders and proof of ID is required for admittance. It is not intended for the general public.

One of the big “Buzz words” in the fitness industry nowadays (they always need a new buzz word) is Core Training. Before you say it, the title of my book “Corps Strength” is not one of these, as “Corps” relates to my Marine background. However training your Core is very important for those who use their bodies to make a living. Military members, firemen and law enforcement people rely on their Core much more than the average weekend athlete.
But what really is your Core? Many years ago when I had dreams of being a professional fighter (a boxer that is, MMA wasn’t around in the late 70’s) my old school trainer use to preach to us about using our “Core” to generate real punching power. However he never used the word Core, he called it the “Wheel house”. Roughly the area from your belly button to your knees. This is the place where the most powerful muscles of your body hang out; your upper legs, hips, butt and lower back, it’s where knockout power really comes from, not in your arms. But this area doesn’t just help in hitting power but for every important movement in sports as well as for everyday physical work. It needs to be trained and conditioned, for not only brute force but also for endurance, flexibility and remaining injury free. I learned how to do this correctly many years ago and include these methods in my training system. You will never maintain real strength, health and endurance without a well conditioned “Wheel House”. Sorry that I brought back an old buzz word to describe a new one, but to be honest I like the old one better.
Be safe and good luck.
