Look What We Had to Say 3 Years Ago Today

Monday, October 24th, 2011

Our roots go all the way back to October of 97 when we launched the Gear Guru website. We haven’t missed a day of publishing in well over 3 years here at SSD. Maybe we are on to something.

Soldier Systems Blog Logo

We have decided to alter the site’s name slightly in order to more accurately express what is going on here. One of our readers recently suggested the name “Soldier Systems Daily” and mulling it over, we decided he is right. We aren’t a true blog. We don’t pontificate on the woes of the world and we don’t feature feedback from our readers like traditional blogs. The reason is simple, we are a news source; a daily news source.

Our initial inspiration was the old Gear Guru website modernized with a serious dash of Gizmodo. Obviously, the Soldier Systems world isn’t nearly as big as the gadget-verse so we can’t publish as much as they do. But all things considered we are doing a pretty good job of keeping up. We started out publishing one article a day. Now we are at a steady two articles a day and depending on material have published up to six articles in a day. Of course, we aren’t anything without our readers and content. Spread the word amongst your friends and colleagues. We provide new material daily and a visit only once a week won’t keep you up to date. Also, keep those emails rolling in. Finally, we promise to continue with the same streamlined format that our readership praises.

215 Gear Short Sleeve Operator’s Shirt

Monday, October 24th, 2011

Now available for pre-order, 215 Gear’s Short Sleeve Operator’s Shirt is made for “today’s barrel chested freedom fighter.” With a description like that, seriously, how can you go wrong? Truthfully, it’s not all hype. According to 215 Gear it is made from CoolMax for comfort and assembled using flat seam construction to avoid hot spots. Finally, they’ve added a 4″ x 4″ Velcro square for IFF patches.

We get LOTS of spam email but for once, one might actually be worth something, to someone. That is, if that someone has “any smaller handheld gas propulsion magnetic grappling hook.”

RCMP Adopts C8 Carbine

Sunday, October 23rd, 2011

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police have finally adopted the C8 carbine which is a variant of the M4 manufactured by Colt Canada after four Mounties were killed six years ago in Alberta. These aren’t the first carbines issued to Law Enforcement Canada as they are already in use by the RCMP’s Emergency Reaction Teams as well as other tactical units. Rather, this deployment is much more like the adoption of patrol carbines within US LE to react to an increasingly armed criminal element. Unfortunately, the RCMP is only purchasing 375 carbines and will have to determine the basis of issue.

In addition to the new weapons, the RCMP announced earlier this year the purchase of 6,800 improved bulletproof vests with full deployment by April 1, 2013.

This is the standard C8 package.

1 – Reduced length cold hammer forged heavy barrel
2 – Flash suppressor
3 – Bayonet lug
4 – TRI-AD 1TM MIL-STD-1913 accessory mount
5 – Special carbine chamber and gas system
6 – Accepts all STANAG magazines
7 – Integrated sight rail (Weaver or Picatinny)
8 – Optional ambidextrous controls
9 – Single or double sided sling loop
10 – Standard 4 position buttstock with no slip rubber butt pad

Today We Remember Warriors Lost in The Lebanon

Sunday, October 23rd, 2011

On October 23, 1983 at 6:22 AM, a large delivery truck drove to the Beirut International Airport where US Marines, serving as part of a multinational force were billeted. They were in Lebanon to help keep the peace in a land torn asunder by internal strife, fueled by outside influence.

The truck contained 12,000 lbs of TNT. The driver detonated the truck bomb and in this cowardly act killed 220 Marines 18 Navy personnel and three Soldiers, along with sixty Americans injured.

Unfortunately, the deaths did not end there. Two minutes later, the barracks of the French contingent was attacked with a bomb killing 58 paratroopers from the 1st Parachute Chasseur Regiment and wounding another 15.

To make the day even more tragic, the Lebanese janitor of the American barracks as well as the wife and four children of a Lebanese janitor at the French building were also killed.

Remember all of them and their sacrifice today.

AAC debuted the Honey Badger at AUSA. It was designed as a replacement for the venerable MP5 which will soon see its 50th birthday. However, the Honey Badger offers a couple of advantages. First, it is chambered for the .300 blackout cartridge. This means the weapon can fore both super and subsonic ammo. Additionally, it is based on the Stoner design which requires little transition from the M4.

Here you can see the Honey Badger’ two lengths of hand guards.
