Tactical Operations Manikin

Wednesday, July 11th, 2012

As of late, there as been a lot of push back on live tissue training. The Tactical Operations Manikin (T.O.M. Man) from Innovative Tactical Training Solutions may be just the solution.

T.O.M. Man is a rugged patient care simulator capable of repeatedly surviving tactical trauma training and is designed to move like a human and simulates massive bleeding in a combat environment. Features include remote control allowing the instructor to add surprise elements, talking, breathing, bleeding, breath sounds include sucking chest wounds, respiratory distress, massive bleeding, needle decompression, tourniquet, wound packing, surgical airway. Breathing is controlled by recovery position for Care Under Fire. Several areas of massive and minor bleeding throughout the main arteries and face are managed via a single controller that provides a number of features to support TAC Med and TCCC training with “live responses”.

ITTS is an innovative company run by a former USAF PJ. They teamed up with Techline Trauma to develop the T.O.M. Man and one of the best things about this product is that it can be customized for your particular needs. In fact, it weighs between 130-150 lbs which goes a long way to mimicking a human’s size and weight which means T.O.M. Man can support a wide variety of training.

ITTS products are available for unit and agency purchase through www.ADSinc.com. And, be sure to check it out at ADS Warrior Expo East.

Thunder Challenge

Wednesday, July 11th, 2012

Billed as “The First Obstacle Racing Course Created, Lead and Produced By Navy SEALs and US Special Forces Soldiers,” Thunder Challenge was created in 2011 by former US Army Blackhawk Pilot, Rusty Schellman. The event pits adventure racers against a series of challenges devised by US Special Operators. The course covers 10K of terrain, with 20 to 25 unique challenges spread across variable conditions and obstacles including climbs, mud pits and even cold water tests of endurance. However, due to the size of the undertaking participants attack the course in pre-staged waves over the course of two days. It’s just that big. But don’t let this intimidate you. It’s definitely a family atmosphere. there’s even a Little Warriors obstacle course for ages 6-12.

An inaugural event was held in May but there are three additional planned this year.
• August 4 & 5: Thunder Challenge Rockies in Castle Rock, CO
• October 6 & 7 Thunder Challenge Steel in Pittsburgh, PA
• December 8 & 9: Thunder Challenge Southern California (site TBA)

A portion of the proceeds of each race go to Project Sanctuary, a non-profit organization that helps support Veterans and their families. Additionally, plans call for hiring Wounded Warriors into key positions as the company grows.

For those interested, there are still opportunities to sponsor the events.

Joint Force Extrication Kit

Wednesday, July 11th, 2012

ADS developed the Joint Forces Extrication Kit at the request of the military in order more widely proliferate the tools needed to extract personnel from disabled armored vehicles. When an up-armored HMMWV or MRAP rolls, it can be very difficult to gain access to anyone inside, especially as the doors are so heavy. After receiving the requirement and conducting a quick market survey ADS was able to assemble this kit.

Joint Forces Extrication Kits

It consists of the Power Hawk Technologies Rescue Tool which is a battery powered system. This makes it lightweight but still offers ample torque (72,000 inch pounds) to get the job done. The cross over jaws can be used to cut, pry, or peel open vehicle or aircraft skins in order to gain access. It can also be used on structures or debris. The JFEK also includes the Husqvarna K760 Rescue Saw with three diamond tip blades that can be used to cut through locks, into wood and metal walls as well as transparent armor. The 30? Halligan tool is used for prying and a 4 lbs sledge and 2000 lbs come along round out the kit’s contents. ADS can also customize the kit with additional items as needed.

NEMO Announces New Linking Combat Shelters

Wednesday, July 11th, 2012

NEMO Equipment has announced the launch of its Advanced Linking Combat Shelters (ALCS) at Warrior East and Outdoor Retailer. This is their press release on the new shelter. What’s really cool is that they have incorporated the WL Gore Shelter Fabric. Additionally, they’ve introduced the Interchangeable Camouflage Cover that allows you to use one shelter, yet blend into multiple environments.

The ALCS 1P SE and ALCS 2P SE are positioned to lead the industry in materials, technology and innovation, while addressing the current and future needs of our military and government users. NEMO has partnered with the leading domestic small shelter factory, Diamond Brand, and the leading technical fabric manufacturer, W.L. Gore & Associates, to provide the most advanced Berry Compliant all-weather combat tents on the market. Coupled with the NEMO Losi Combat 2P SE tent, these shelter systems provide significant improvement over incumbent designs currently in use by the US Army and USMC.

“The Advanced Linking Combat Shelters (ALCS) 1P and 2P SE represent a significant step in providing the Warfighter with the best shelter technology for the adverse climates he/she faces today and in the future. The truly innovative linking capability of the shelter means that each Warfighter can be self-sufficient but still possess the ability to link into a “buddy” for the night. The single wall GORE-TEX Shelter Fabric offers reduced signature properties in a waterproof/breathable fabric meeting flame retardant requirements. We expect this shelter to have a substantial impact within our combat forces,” said Mike Sullivan, President and Chief Product Developer, NEMO Shield™.

“We’re delighted to team up with NEMO to equip our Warfighters with better performing, lightweight and packable gear. Our new GORE-TEX Shelter Fabric enables innovative single-wall shelter designs with enhanced concealment, breathable comfort and protection in the harshest operational conditions,” said Eric Gaver, Product Specialist, W.L. Gore & Associates Inc.

The ALCS series offers a lightweight, four-season, single-wall design that allows for significant weight reduction. The innovative linking capability provides a ‘buddy-team’ benefit while still allowing for self-sufficiency in combat environments. Minimal componentry and an integrated pole design allow for fast erect and strike times regardless of conditions. An optional Interchangeable Camouflage Cover (ICC) offers a lightweight, compact, and highly cost effective solution for adapting the tent to different areas of operation. One ALCS tent with 3 different ICC covers provides a higher performing and lower cost solution than 3 tents in 3 different colors or patterns. NEMO is currently developing ICC in MARPAT Desert, MARPAT Woodland and MultiCam and expects to have other patterns available for the new U.S. Army Camouflage.

ALCS1P and 2P SE will be available for order in the Fall.

For much of the last decade, NEMO has been engaged in research and development with the U.S. Army Natick Soldier Research, Development, and Engineering Center and the U.S. Special Operations community. From this effort came NEMO Shield™, forward thinking shelter designs that reduce weight and cube, improve concealment, increase comfort and livability, and maximize operational flexibility and efficiency for the Warfighter. Many of our elite forces have depended on NEMO tents, shelters, sleeping gear, weapons bags, and other products to take full advantage of what limited comfort and protection can be found on the battlefield. NEMO is intensely proud to serve these service men and women, and aims to design, engineer, and manufacture the best equipment solutions possible.

NEMO Equipment Hires Six New Employees

Wednesday, July 11th, 2012

NEMO Equipment, Inc, a leader in designing innovative tents and backcountry sleep systems, is positioning itself for continued growth in 2012 by adding six new people to the family, five filling new positions. The new posts include Chief Financial Officer, Senior Director of Marketing, Customer Service Manager, Product Coordinator, and Vice President/Chief Product Developer, NEMO Shield. The recently vacant Senior Sales Director position has also been filled.

“NEMO has been fortunate to enjoy significant growth over the past six years and we are on track to increase by another 50-70% in 2012. We hit an inflexion point in 2011 where it was time to bring in additional experienced senior management. Our goal is to keep the product, operational, and marketing components of our business accelerating at the same rate. We had begun to get ahead of ourselves, with the quality and innovation of our products outstripping our ability to get them on shelves and tell the complete story. We’re very proud of the new talent that’s joined NEMO; they’ve already affected some big and meaningful positive changes,” said Cam Brensinger, founder and president.

Earlier this year, NEMO launched two new product lines; sleeping bags and a backcountry washing system. The Helio Pressure Shower, which incorporates the company’s already proven AirSupported Technology, has introduced NEMO to new markets. Not only for backcountry showering, Helio is also well suited for vehicle-based activities, rinsing off post surf or canyoneering, and cleaning gear and pets after a great day on the trail. Coupled with its unique new sleeping bag designs, NEMO will now appeal to a broader customer base.

The new positions have been added and filled over the past seven months, increasing NEMO’s headcount by 26% to 19 people and 6 dogs. To accommodate the growth in people and product, NEMO re-located its headquarters to Dover, NH, where it was able to more than double its space.

An intro to the new members…

Chief Financial Officer, Tina Bourgeois comes to NEMO from Ibex Outdoor Clothing. With a degree in Managerial Accounting from Franklin Pierce University and an MBA in the works, when she’s not studying, she can be found hiking and trail running with her shadow, boxer-lab, Rosie.

Senior Director of Sales, Brent Merriam has both a Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Engineering degree from Dartmouth. He’s been in the outdoor industry for over 10 years, most recently at Novation North America/Kayland USA. An MBA is so close he can almost taste it. Once all the studying is done, he’ll be back on his bike, surf- and snowboard.

Mike Sullivan, Vice President and Chief Product Developer, NEMO Shield™, comes to NEMO with a
BS in Mechanical Engineering and an MBA. He’s worked for Fortune 500 defense companies and has served over 20 years as an officer in the US Army with several combat deployments and in Special Operations units. Lieutenant Colonel Sullivan will be supporting Shield™, the company’s military and law enforcement program. When not at work, Mike can be found competing in triathlons and working down the list of NH 4,000 footers with his daughters.

Senior Director of Marketing, Tiffany Teaford has directed brand and product management for leading outdoor companies for over 10 years, most recently having led Nalgene’s OEM hydration business. At lunchtime, a small number of NEMO staff dares to chase her while she runs the roads training to win her age category in the next local half marathon.

Blake Fowler, Product Coordinator, also comes to NEMO after serving in the US Army as a Captain, with a tour in Afghanistan. Previously, Fowler was an operations program manager, responsible for creating and managing an explosives compliance program as well as tracking program for explosives use. At NEMO, he’ll be in charge of scheduling and tracking product development and streamlining product commercialization processes.

Customer Service Manager Katrina Smith’s love for the outdoors was honed while at college in Downeast Maine studying Human Ecology, the relationships that people share with their environment. Her studies led her to remote islands off the coast of Maine and Washington, travels to Central America, and a whitewater canoeing tour of the East Coast. Katrina found a home at NEMO after working in customer relations in the outdoor retail industry.
