Outdoor Research Adds Colors Options For Ferrosi Jacket

Wednesday, February 14th, 2018

I am a big fan of Outdoor Research’s Ferrosi Hooded Jacket. It’s a great Spring & Fall soft shell, shedding wind and light rain.

While there are some great “tactical” color options, the Ferrosi is great for every day wear and the new colors offer low viz options for those who want performance as well as the ability to blend in with the crowd. On the other hand, they’ve got two Red options for times when you need high visibility like service as a Range Cadre or SAR.

The Ferrosi features a Hood, Zipperrd handwarmer pockets, Zippered chest pocket, and Thumb loops.

The Fabric is a 90D 86% nylon/14% spandex stretch woven ripstop body and hood combined with a 120D Cordura blend 91% nylon/9% spandex stretch woven shoulders and lower sleeves.

OR – Mountainsmith Reboots Lumbar Packs For 2016

Sunday, August 9th, 2015

Mountainsmith has been making Lumbar packs for decades.  In fact, I remember several guys back in the early 90s attaching the Black version to the lower back (lumbar) of their Tactical Load Bearing Vests as a low profile alternative to the butt pack.

I checked them out at Outdoor Retailer and it looks like we’ll see some great alternatives to Black for those guys who want to put together an E&E bag or other home brew load carrying solution.

Golden, CO — Jul 21, 2015 – Mountainsmith—craftsmen of iconic backcountry equipment and recreational outdoor gear— will debut 2016’s completely redesigned lumbar pack line at Summer Outdoor Retailer. Innovative and built for off the beaten path excursions, these new Mountainsmith products offer outdoor an urban adventurers versatility to brave the elements, no matter what Mother Nature throws their way.

“Some 35 years ago Mountainsmith’s lumbar packs started as extremely simple, rugged, utilitarian outdoor pieces, made to carry load in a comfortable way while keeping things you need quick at hand,” says Mountainsmith designer Jacob Stein. “For our 2016 lumbar launch, our focus was to maintain these core characteristics while paying close attention to materials, modern relevant function, color, and style.”

Mountainsmith has taken a very careful approach to updating their iconic line of lumbar packs, placing their focus on improving durability and modern utility. Adding color-matched shock cord and stretch mesh allowed these bags to come together with cutting-edge color ways, while in depth studies on the fabrics and trims brought the introduction of Cordura® HP fabric throughout Mountainsmith’s entire lumbar line. These already rugged bags were upgraded to offer bombproof durability. Revisiting every feature and fine-tuning for comfort and utility, these are the best lumbar packs ever made, by the brand that invented the category over 35 years ago.

“We are very excited about our partnership with the CORDURA brand and know this translates to outstanding quality and durability,” adds Stein. “Mountainsmith strives to make products that people love and that will last a lifetime. We think we’ve hit the mark again in 2016.”

Tuesday, August 5th, 2014

SG-20 is a dual component polyurethane adhesive that is durable and flexible. Sets in 1 minute and cures in an hour. Each kit is enough for up to 3 repairs and can be used on a variety of items including waders, all neoprene a including dive suits, tents, Gore-tex, etc.

It won’t stick to some PVCs and some hard plastics but it sounds like a great field repair kit addition. Shelf life is 18 months.

Military Apparel Veteran Joins the 37.5 Technology Team – Dave Bywater To Head Up West Coast And Government Accounts For Cocona Natural Technologies

Tuesday, August 5th, 2014

This is awesome news to me. I only have I known Dave for years I’ve been a huge fan of the Cocona fabric technology for almost as many. This is a great team up and I’m looking forward to see what Dave has in store for us in his new position.

Dave Bywater, who built the Military, Special Forces, and Wildland Fire business at Massif Mountain Gear, is now heading up all Military, Wildland Fire, and West Coast accounts for Cocona Natural Technologies, maker of patented 37.5™ Technology.

“It is an honor to be reunited with Dave, he is one of the finest men I know”, noted CEO Jeff Bowman who previously worked with Bywater at Massif. “Dave will help take our customer service to the next level.”

A lifelong user of high-performance gear, Bywater grew up climbing in Utah and spent 16 years as a Grand Teton National Park Employee. As part of the elite Jenny Lake Climbing Rangers, he routinely performed helicopter short-haul rescues as well as high-angle rock, ice, and snow rescues. Bywater received the Department of Interior Valor Award for an extreme rescue on Mt. McKinley. He has also been a Wildland Fire Fighter on engine and ground crews.

Bywater has more than 10 years of experience in the high-performance garment and textile industry and was most recently Vice President of Government Sales at Massif. “I’ve spent my career both using high-performance gear and getting the best equipment possible into the hands of people with the world’s most dangerous jobs,” said Bywater. “I’m excited to work with 37.5 technology, which, among other benefits, can help mitigate heat stress so you can focus on the job at hand—whether that’s training for an event, performing on a team, or protecting the country. The technology has an incredibly broad range of applications and the opportunities are limitless.”

OR – PowerPot

Monday, March 10th, 2014

I’ve mentioned PowerPot a couple of times in the past and at this past OR Winter Market they showed their new PowerPot X which offers twice the power of its predecessor the PowerPot V. This means you can charge two smartphones or one tablet (10w and up to 2a) via 2 USB ports, in a package that weighs in beginning at 20oz depending on whether you use the regular 2.4l or XL 3.8l model.

The concept is simple. You use the PowerPot to cook and the device converts heat into power which can be used directly or stored in a battery.
