Additional Details On The New Army Physical Fitness Uniform

Friday, July 26th, 2013

This is the briefing provided to senior Army leaders regarding the new Army Physical Fitness Uniform. I am no longer in the Army but as a former Soldier, I really like what they’ve done. Traditionally, going back to the banana suit (yes, I’m that old) Army issue PT uniforms haven’t been much to write home about. For those of you unfamiliar, the Army colors are Black and Yellow so a Black PT uniform is quite fitting. For those of you worried about being run over by a maniacal driver during periods of darkness; never fear, your trusty companion the reflective belt won’t be going away.

If you read the last post on the APFU, which featured Slide 4, and the associated comments, you will recall that a Ft Bragg-based Soldier mentioned recently participating in a recent Limited User Evaluation. It’s also mentioned in this brief. And, even more interestingly, the formal announcement is slated for 1st Qtr, FY 2014. The APFU announcement was originally to coincide with the Camo announcement. I’d say this adds even more credence to the idea that the Camo announcement is now scheduled for AUSA.

If anyone wants to share the Camo Improvement Effort slides, I’d be most obliged.

Magpul Sues 4 Magazine Manufacturers for Patent Infringement – UPDATED

Thursday, July 25th, 2013

Today, Magpul posted a statement on their website regarding their lawsuits against four companies alleging patent infringement. I’d like to know which four companies as well and as soon as my PACER account is back up, I’ll let you know.

UPDATED – The 4 companies are:
Plinker Tactical
Big Rock Sports DBA Swampfox
Promag Ind
Cole Ind

Magpul Industries Corp announced today that it has filed patent infringement lawsuits against four companies for offering for sale, selling, and distributing magazines for AR15/M16 compatible weapons in violation of Magpul’s patents. The company’s lawsuits allege infringement of Utility Pat. No. 8,069,601 for a novel ammunition magazine, in addition to numerous Magpul design patents.

The lawsuits, filed in United States District Court, Colorado, provide another example of Magpul’s dedication to protecting its valuable brand while sending a warning to others attempting to infringe on our innovations. “These patents exemplify the industrial design-focused spirit at Magpul, which drives us to create novel solutions that enhance user experience with our products,” said Duane Liptak, Director of Product Management and Marketing for Magpul Industries. “People who use Magpul products have high expectations and a great deal of trust regarding the value, quality, and amount of thought put into every design we release. As such, we cannot allow others to misappropriate the patented technology that helps us generate that consumer confidence and trust.”

The lawsuits are the largest and most significant to date brought by Magpul, and are part of the company’s ongoing proactive efforts to combat the unlawful production, distribution, and sale of products that infringe on its valuable intellectual property rights.

NAVY SEALS — DANGER CLOSE

Thursday, July 25th, 2013

Hans Halberstadt and I are longtime friends but I read his books long before I knew him. He began making photographs as a door gunner in Viet Nam, then made movies for a while, then wrote books about the military for thirty years and 67 titles. He has taken some of his extensive imagery collection and began to create videos. I think it’s a great way to showcase his work but also pay tribute to our forces. Since SSD is headquartered in a Navy SEAL town, what better fit than a video dedicated to them? What a great coincidence.

Over the years much of his coverage has been of SOF – Army SF, SEALs and SWCC, JTACs, and USMC Recon – and these will become videos of their own. Eventually, he plans to do additional videos on combat aviation, armor, EOD, infantry, and other topics.

Halberstadt’s company, Military Stock Photography, offers imagery that is in compliance with DoD directives for commercial use. It’s a great resource for industry.
