Monday, November 27th, 2017

With increasing use of Scorpions by Law Enforcement, CZ-USA is introducing suppressed variants.

Teaming up with the airflow specialists at Aerocharger, they developed their own suppressor which offers the performance of larger, bulkier cans but in a much lighter, shorter package.

A fully-welded titanium can, the S2 Ti Reflex is designed to fit under an HB Industries handguard, allowing it to have a 2” reflex blast chamber and giving it the volume of much larger cans while only protruding from the muzzle 5.83 inches. Weighing in at just 9.6 ounces, it spits out 147 grain defensive loads at well under 130 dB.

Milipol 17 – SABER ReadiMask

Monday, November 27th, 2017

One of the most remarkable products I saw at last week’s Milipol security exhibition in Paris was SABER’s new ReadiMask. I was literally walking amongst the aisles and I saw SABER’s booth, a brand well known for their pepper spray and saw this mask on a manakin. I immediately stopped and snapped a photo.

Later, I was able to ask them about the full face mask and found out it is called the ReadiMask Adhesive Sealing Particle Respirator. There are two things that stuck out to me. First, the ReadiMask features integrated, fog resistant eye protection. Second, is the hypoallergenic surgical grade adhesive around the entire edge of the mask

While the ReadiMask is currently undergoing NIOSH certification. It’s closest equivalent is the N95 particulate filter mask. However, few if any, N95 masks seal directly to the face. In fact, the test procedure for particulate masks find them sandwiched between two frames and then placed over the blower which puts particulates under pressure. An N95 mask certification means that it is not oil resistant, but filters 95% of particles that are at least 0.3 microns in diameter. But if that mask doesn’t completely seal to the face when used for real, there will be cracks around the edges allowing some material to enter the mask. Additionally, N95 masks don’t incorporate eye protection.

Even without the certification complete, SABER claims ReadiMask, “Substantially reduces exposure to pepper spray, bacteria, spores similar to anthrax, bloodborne pathogens, viruses, smoke particulates, hazardous particulates, pollution, spit & bodily fluids, mold, asbestos, dust, debris etc.”

ReadiMask comes flat packed and can be included in any LEO or first responder’s PPE for in extremis use.

Purchase of ReadiMask is restricted to professional users.

MIPS F2 – A New Impact Liner For Ballistic Helmets

Monday, November 27th, 2017

SWEDISH COMPANY MIPS CONTINUES TO EXPAND THEIR PLATFORM, BRINGING ROTATIONAL FORCE-DAMPENING TECHNOLOGY TO HARD SHELL HELMETS IN LAW ENFORCEMENT AND THE ARMED FORCES..

MIPS, the premier brain safety technology company, has developed a new product designed especially for the ballistic helmets used by law enforcement and military personnel, as well as those in snow sports. Like all MIPS products, the core technology addresses the rotational forces that are linked to brain injuries, with the decades of research and study that went into the flagship MIPS system. This new product design, however, is refined to specifically meet the safety needs within the law enforcement and armed forces community.

The MIPS:F2 system, is built on the standard MIPS low-friction layer that provides the crucial 10-15 millimeters of omnidirectional movement in the three to ten milliseconds following an impact. Unlike the MIPS system seen to date in active sports helmets, the low-friction layer in the MIPS:F2 is situated between the outer shell of the helmet and the foam liner on the interior. A series of Flexible Retention Organisms (elastomers) and nylon brackets that are molded into the helmet allow the foam liner to move independent of the low-friction layer and the outer shell, resulting in at least a 10% reduction in the damaging rotational motion resulting from oblique impacts.

“MIPS now has a long history helping to improve brain safety and risk of injury in the cycling and snow sports communities,” says Johan Thiel, CEO of MIPS. “With the MIPS:F2 system, we can not only expand that technology into more sports helmet models, but also we can help keep safe those who put their lives on the line to protect our communities every day.” The first helmet launched within LEAF will be SAFE4U Security of Sweden AB, a ballistic helmet model S4U SOG MIPS System. SAFE4U is a Swedish company driven by a constant desire for innovation. Development and design of protective body armour is their core business. This is done with high technology, experience, knowledge and innovation. Models featuring the MIPS:F2 will come to market in Spring of 2018.

The MIPS: F2 system is mounted between the EPP foam liner and exterior shell and provides the ability for the EPP liner to slide relative to the outer shell of the helmet. This 10 – 15 mm of relative motion is referred to as the MIPS Movement and provides added protection against rotational motion to the brain caused by angled impacts to the head.

“GSG 9 The special operations unit of the Federal Police: Germany’s spearhead in the fight against terrorism”

Sunday, November 26th, 2017

My friend Dr Jan-Phillipp Weisswange has teamed up with Sören Sünkler to present the new book, “GSG 9. The special operations unit of the Federal Police – Germany’s spearhead in the fight against terrorism”, available from k-isom.com.

The photographs are excellent and the book includes English text, so don’t shy away because of language concerns.

He offered me this description of the book:

Producing an illustrated volume aimed at introducing today’s GSG 9 to a wider public is undoubtedly among the highpoints in any specialized journalist’s career. It has been an honour and a pleasure to turn this project into reality. On 16th October 2017, Sören Sünkler (my publisher, producer and co-author) and me have had the great honour to presenting the very first copy of our book “GSG 9. The special operations unit of the Federal Police – Germany’s spearhead in the fight against terrorism” to the unit’s commander, Colonel Jerome Fuchs. Now the book is available on the market finally!

The core task of GSG 9 is the fight against terrorism and other forms of serious and violent crime. In performing this mission, protecting human lives has always been GSG 9’s utmost priority.
Ever since its foundation in 1972, this has been its raison d’être – around the clock and around the world.

Throughout its 45-year history, continuity and change have been GSG 9’s constant companions. Founded on 26 September 1972 as “Grenzschutzgruppe 9”, or Border Guard Group 9, of the former Bundesgrenzschutz (BGS), or Federal Border Guard, it is one of the world’s oldest police special operations units. Following the transformation and renaming of the BGS to the Bundespolizei, or Federal Police, in July 2005, GSG 9 was the only unit to retain its traditional nomenclature. Since then, the special operations unit has been officially known as “GSG 9 der Bundespolizei”.

Evolving “modi operandi” and the emergence of new threats as well as the ever-changing global political situation have confronted the GSG 9 with fresh challenges right from the start – challenges which GSG 9 has invariably met with matchless resolve.

Featuring 208 pages, the lavishly illustrated book offers a unique look at today’s GSG 9, the ultramodern special operations unit of the German Federal Police, and its 45-year history. Short texts in German as well as in English language provide further information about GSG 9’s tasks, organization, selection and training, operational units, special skills, missions, national and multinational cooperation, weapons and equipment as well as history.

I was fortunate to meet with Jan-Phillipp at Milipol where he presented me with a copy.

The first edition of the book is strictly limited to 2.000 copies for the public book trade. When ordering (bestellung@k-isom.com), a number between 1001 and 3000 can be chosen and will be delivered if still available. I already have number 1776.
