Dry Land, Wet Work, Same DNA: New EXFIL Rescuer Helmets from Team Wendy Are Born from the Field, Built for SAR

Wednesday, November 12th, 2025

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Nov. 12, 2025 – Team Wendy®, a leading provider of innovative head protection systems, introduces EXFIL® Rescuer bump helmets for search-and-rescue (SAR) missions spanning terrain to tide. Developed directly from field feedback, the new product platform reflects Team Wendy’s “listen first, adapt fast” approach to design and features two purpose-built models: the EXFIL® Rescuer for on-the-ground operations, and the EXFIL® Maritime Rescuer for maritime, hurricane and swift-water response.

The EXFIL Rescuer delivers advanced protection and everyday adaptability for land-based missions, while the EXFIL Maritime Rescuer extends that performance into the water with a liner engineered for neutral buoyancy and quick drying. Both models feature liner systems with Zorbium® foam technology—combining blunt-impact mitigation with comfort—and both helmets are available in high-visibility red or yellow.

“We wanted to give agencies and public-safety teams a unified system that works across multiple rescue environments,” said Garson Greathouse, Regional Sales Manager (Southeast) at Team Wendy. “Starting with the same shell used in our popular EXFIL LTP (Lightweight, Tactical, Polymer) bump helmets, we expanded that foundation by closing the loop with SAR crews, until the platform reflected the realities of the way they actually work onshore and offshore.”

Built light, built right

The EXFIL Rescuer weighs just 1.59 lbs. (varies slightly by size and pad configuration) to give first responders the freedom to move fast, stay sharp and keep their focus where it counts. Designed for the rigors of wilderness rescue, structural collapse and urban interface, among other dangerous scenarios, it offers a full roster of mission-ready features including:

  • An aluminum shroud designed to handle helmet lights for hands-free illumination, night vision and thermal imaging products.
  • A lightweight, impact-modified polycarbonate shell with signature EXFIL geometry.
  • A Velcro® pattern designed for top led lights or IR strobes, attachments and patches.
  • The handmade CAM FIT™ retention system featuring Team Wendy’s signature BOA® fit integration (a micro-adjustable dial helps distribute light, even pressure around the head).
  • Rails compatible with EXFIL accessories including face shields, visors and Peltor™ adapters.
  • A sport-style chin strap for a low-profile, secure fit.

For water rescue

Retaining the same core hardware and base weight, the EXFIL Maritime Rescuer builds on the landward model with a marine-grade liner, while the under-the-chin retention system stays clear of snorkels, comms and hoods upon water entry.

“SAR swimmers told us that an over-the-chin or cup-style strap can scoop water and yank the helmet, so you’re constantly retightening it instead of focusing on the rescue,” Greathouse said. “Or, if the liner floats, you get ‘bucketing,’ where the helmet lifts or pulls your head back, and that can break your seal.

“The EXFIL Maritime Rescuer is our answer to those concerns. It uses an under-the-chin strap that stays clear of the airway and a moisture-shedding, neutrally buoyant liner that won’t fight you in the water. It’s about achieving a mission-ready fit rather than pushing a tactical helmet into rescue work it wasn’t intended for.”

A new spin on SAR

Search and rescue work is not served well by repurposed gear, and helmets that prioritize fire or other hazards often miss the adaptability that SAR missions demand. That’s why Team Wendy’s applied science program focuses on understanding the blunt and rotational impacts (e.g., debris strikes, wall collisions, head-to-ground falls) that are the primary drivers of concussion and traumatic brain injury (TBI).

To evaluate helmets beyond legacy linear drop tests, the team developed DREW (Dummy for Rotational Evaluation of Wearables), a biofidelic (behaves like the human body) rig that captures both linear and rotational head motion. At Team Wendy, this work contributes to the development of advanced liner systems, foam chemistries and pad geometries that can benefit the men and women who put their well-being on the line every day—innovations like those found in new EXFIL Rescuer helmets.

Soldier Influenced MHS General Forces Configuration and Accessories Approved

Wednesday, November 5th, 2025

NEWINGTON, N.H., (November 5, 2025) – SIG SAUER, a leading manufacturer of advanced firearms, optics, and ammunition, is pleased to announce the recent approval and authorization of new parts and accessories for the M17 (full size) and M18 (compact) pistols as part of the U.S. Army’s Modular Handgun System (MHS) Program. This authorization simplifies procurement, enabling soldiers to order items directly through established military supply channels.

The design of the SIG SAUER P320’s Fire Control Unit (FCU) allows the unique ability to modify the pistol to meet operational needs and Soldier preferences. Everything wrapped around the FCU is an adaptable accessory. Due to this feature, the U.S. Army and SIG SAUER collaborated on the Modular Handgun eXchange (MHX) accessories package.

The MHS General Forces Configuration (MHS-GFC) variant represents the initial introduction in a series of significant advancements in pistol modularity.  This configuration enables soldiers to convert existing M17 and M18 pistols to address a broad spectrum of operational requirements. Key enhancements include increased accuracy and hit probability, reduced training time, faster manipulation, and improved system control, all of which contribute to superior performance in diverse operational environments.

“SIG SAUER remains committed to equipping U.S. Army personnel with innovative solutions that adapt to evolving needs,” said Steve Rose, SIG SAUER Executive Vice President, Defense Strategies Group. “The MHS-GFC and associated AAL items exemplify our dedication to modular design, empowering soldiers with tools to enhance effectiveness and efficiency on the battlefield.”

Soldiers can swap parts at the user level to alter the configuration of their currently fielded M17 or M18. Enhancements such as the grip module, flared magazine well, gas pedal take-down lever, slide-mounted or stand-alone RM17 Pistol Red Dot Sight (PRDS), special barrels, and other accessories are available to convert the standard MHS to either the MHS-GFC or a preferred alternative, ensuring optimal fit and functionality.

And Now, the Rest of the Air Force M18 Fatality Story

Tuesday, November 4th, 2025

Back in July Amn Brayden Lovan was killled in a shooting in the Weapons Storage Area of FE Warren AFB, Wyoming. It is alleged he was shot by another member of his squadron, Amn Marcus White-Allen who was charged with involuntary manslaughter as well as making a false official statement.

This horrific incident also led to a questionable decision by the Commanding General of Air Force Global Strike Command, Gen Thomas Bussiere to remove the weapon from service so that the command’s inventory could be inspected for defects. This only further fed the flames of the false report that the weapon had suffered an “uncommanded discharge” leading to Amn Lovan’s death. The command kept the weapon from service for well over a month despite knowing that the weapon was not to blame. In late August the M18 was reinstated to full service in AFGSC.

Paranoia spread like wildfire throughout the Air Force with multiple units withdrawing the weapons from service. This ended up being picked up by other organizations outside of the Department of War as internet influencers spread rumors and false information. Cooler heads eventually prevailed.

Last Friday sworn testimony in a court martial of two additional Airmen involved in the incident filled in even more blanks since the M18s were returned to service.

The alleged gunman, Amn White-Allen was found dead in his apartment on 8 October. Why he was not in pre-trial confinement remains a mystery but four SF Airmen assigned to the same Missile Wing have died in as many months calling into question the leadership of that unit. Authorities have not released a cause of death for Amn White-Allen. Upon news of his untimely death, the internet was since again awash with wild accusations but the most likely cause is self-harm. The man was facing likely conviction and incarceration for being accused of negligently killing a fellow Airman. Eventually the truth of this final element of the story will also come out and individuals continuing to throw wild accusations will look even more foolish.

Those two unnamed Air Force Security Forces members initially stood by a false assertion that the weapon fired in an uncommanded fashion. Investigation soon revealed that was a lie. Last Friday they both pleaded guilty to making a false official statement and corrected the record.

The sober truth of this entire affair is that firearms are dangerous and must be treated that way. They are not toys. But they also don’t just inadvertently discharge.

What we do know for sure is that while a Modular Handgun System M18 was used to take the life of Amn Lovan, it did not discharge of its own volition as was alleged by so many firearms influencers and parroted by their followers. Based on sworn testimony, Amn White-Allen placed the gun against the chest of Amn Lovan in a “joking manner” and pulled the trigger. The result is two Airmen dead in needless tragedies.

During this affair, we witnessed a social contagion. Some with ill intention toward the MHS program used the event to attempt to force change that was not going to come. Still angry that their preferred brand of handgun wasn’t adopted years ago by the US military, they were sure they could force the DOW to go back and pick their favorite. Many others joined in on the “roasting” of MHS manufacturer SIG SAUER for the fun of it, while others had more sinister agendas including bankrupting the business that made the pistols. Many voices joined together sharing false information, hurling insults at anyone (including this writer) who knew the information they were swearing by was false. They formed an angry mob. Only time and the trickling out of evidence has turned the tide. Even now, some will cling to wild conspiracy theories about the incident rather than admit the truth.

Few of those who claimed that the M18 was to blame for the death have come forward to admit they were wrong. They have done great damage to confidence in the weapon by military, police, and civilian users.

The Modular Handgun System remains safe and reliable. Program managers across the services have reiterated that fact. It’s time to stop spreading false information and accept that this was a needless tragedy wrought by the actions of one man upon another.
