SIG SAUER Global Defense Range Demo Day – New Rifles

Thursday, February 13th, 2025

During the recent Global Defense Demo Day in Las Vegas SIG SAUER showcased their latest rifles.

First off, SIG SAUER has entered the rack carbine market with a new rifle to compete for international Stoner pattern procurements. Let’s face it, throughout the latter half of the 20th century, the communist bloc’s AK pattern weapons dominated battlefields around the world. But since the advent of the war on terror, everyone has switched to Stoner pattern weapons, particularly the US M4 carbine. Even our enemies are carrying them now. Consequently, there are regular opportunities to supply carbines, particularly DI guns, to friendly foreign governments.

Here is a pboto with the contract carbine along with a sneak peek of the updated SIG 516 which is a short-stroke piston gun.

Here are photos of each side of the 516’s new receiver set. You’ll note some DNA from the Spear family like the upper receiver reinforcement and side charging handle.

This video was provided by SIG SAUER and features the MCX Rattler in .300 BLK and the all-new M400 PRO V2 as well as the US Army’s new XM7 Spear and SIG Designated Marksman Rifle. The DMR is set up with a 20″ barrel in 6.5 CM.

There were a few other surprises as well but I suspect we will see those more formally unveiled during this year’s SIG NEXT event.

SIG SAUER Global Defense Range Demo Day – Ammunition

Wednesday, February 12th, 2025

Even before opening their new 210,000 square foot Jacksonville Arkansas Ammunition Center, SIG SAUER had been innovating in the ammunition space. Take for example their hybrid case ammo now used by the US Army as part of the Next Generation Squad Weapon program.

During the recent Global Defense Demo Day in Las Vegas the ammunition team showcased their latest developments.

One of the biggest announcements was that new military caliber ammunition using the hybrid case will be referred to as HYP for Hybrid Performance and pronounced “hype.” Their 5.56 HYP is demonstrating a +400 fps increase over M855A1. Naturally, that comes with even higher chamber pressures than M855A1, but the increase in velocity is impressive.

They also showcased their Multipurpose projectile which features a copper body with steel tip. It is currently available in 6.5 CM, 6.8, 7.62 NATO, and 338 NM.

SIG Ammunition revealed, what is believed to be, the first 338 NM Tracer. It has a 12-1500m burnout with a 25m turn on. They are also working on a 6.8 CM and 7.62 NATO traditional tracer round with a 1000m burnout. Additionally, they informed me One Way Luminescence (OWL) tracers and well as signature on target rounds are under development.

The body armor plates below were all shot at 100m with SIG HYP ammunition using A1 projectiles (M855A1 or M80A1). In defense of the plates, they are NIJ Level 4 certified and the loads they were subjected to are in excess of their rating. The point is to show that these new HYP rounds from SIG offer an overmatch to current armor.

Level 4 plates with 5.56 HYP

Level 4 plates with 7.62 HYP

As you can see, the HYP cartridges are an interesting option for NATO standard armies and other allies who will continue to use 5.56 and 7.62.

SIG has prepared this video to show some of these ammunition efforts in action.

The video covers the first-of-its-kind 338 tracer ammunition, the impressive barrier penetration of SIG Hybrid Ammunition, and the impact of 300 BLK in gel testing.

I’ve included these two images to offer you a close up of the concrete blocks before and after firing with the 7.62 HYP rounds.

We are looking forward to these new ammunition offerings to made available.

Sneak Peek – ROMEO8T AMR Optic from SIG SAUER

Tuesday, February 11th, 2025

In addition to the Machine Gun Optic and Weapons Attached Ranging Platform unveiled during SIG SAUER’s recent Global Defense Demo Day in Las Vegas, they also showed off the ROMEO8T AMR. The AMR suffix denotes Automatically Modified Reticle.

Based on the current ROMEO8T 1 x 38 red dot optic, it is a closed system and has been modified for its new, expanded role, which makes it a good choice for use on LMGs and Carbines.

Despite its small size, the ROMEO8T AMR’s 40mm window Field of View is slightly bigger than the EOTech. Engineers tell me they can go up to a 52mm FOV with this footprint.

The reticle options offer a 2 MOA dot, Circle Dot, BDC, and ballistic holds. Additionally, there are 12 brightness level settings as well as three Night Vision settings.

It is paired with the JULIET3T Micro magnifier. There is a magnetic switch that detects when the Magnifier rotates into position which changes the the reticle in use to another preselected reticle and brightness setting and makes it smaller and less bright to ensure you can continue to see it in the magnified view.

Although the ROMEO 8T is more mature than the Machine Gun Optic we previewed last week, it is still a ways out from release.

Here is a video provided by SIG SAUER which highlights the new optics.

It covers the ROMEO-X enclosed pistol red dot featuring SIG-LOC, a revolutionary mounting system delivering unmatched zero retention and precision and well as the all-new FOXTROT pistol light. It also showcases the ROMEOBT AMR, featuring magnetic reticle switching paired with a flip-down magnifier and the groundbreaking ROMEO9T, one of the most advanced multi-reticle rifle optics ever built.
