Armor Express Live Demo for US PALM

USPALM 1

In the attached video, Matt Davis from Armor Express conducts a controversial self-demo to demonstrate his confidence in his company’s armor products and their relationship with US PALM. He has not self-demo’d one of their ballistic solutions since 2008. This is his 4th demo, but the first with a .45ACP, and the first with their IIIa ballistic package [that US Palm runs exclusively].

DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS AT HOME!!!

DO NOT ATTEMPT THIS YOURSELF!!!

This is not a parlor trick. Matt Davis is a professional and employee of Armor Express. The demonstration is dangerous. Do not attempt this on your own. SSD is not responsible for the stupidity of Mark (see comments) or anyone else for that matter.

MDM – Office of Naval Research

Thursday, September 26th, 2013

The Office of Naval Research displayed several technologies they are developing to help Lighten the Load of the US Marine. One of these projects is the Modular Personal Protection System.

20130926-082925.jpg

It is intended as a means to investigate new materials, technologies, and techniques in order to make a leap ahead for personal protection by reducing parasitic weight in armor systems. As you can see, one way is to ditch traditional MOLLE designs.

20130926-082955.jpg

Additionally, they have developed a new software tool called CPAT that models survivability based on armor placement and materials.

20130926-083043.jpg

This work is helping armor developers in the difficult decision of trade off between coverage and mobility.

MDM – Warrior Trail

20130924-185040.jpg

The owner of Warrior Trail literally accosted me in the aisle at Modern Day Marine and I’m glad he did because he has built a company around providing quality training armor. And Warrior Trail doesn’t just stop at hard plates, they’ve also developed soft armor inserts that replicate weight, bulk and pliability of the real thing.

At 1/10th the cost of real armor, you can outfit an entire team with training plates and soft armor inserts for use during hand to hand, obstacle course and other situational training scenarios that might damage ceramic plates. Additionally, you can get the soft inserts wet without worrying about the integrity of your armor and they can be washed if needed.

20130924-185103.jpg

Not stopping there, they also showed me a BALCS armor carrier. Some organizations will want to use the training armor in their issue carrier but others such as training schools, may want to configure a training vest. It accepts BALCS cut armor, features MOLLE webbing so that you can set it up just like your working vest and can be worn with a cummerbund that accepts side plates or a strap. Offered in Tan, Black and MultiCam.

PEO Soldier Returns ESAPI Plate That Saved His Life To Paratrooper

Thursday, September 19th, 2013

At 0912 hours on 12 August, 2012 while conducting a route clearance patrol near SP Panza, Afghanistan, SGT Joseph Morrissey of C Troop 4-73 Cavalry, 82nd Abn Div was shot in the chest by a 7.62 round from a distance of 30m. It hit right in his ESAPI plate which absorbed the blow and saved his life. Yesterday, that plate was returned by Program Executive Office Soldier’s SEA, CSM Maunakea.

20130919-073650.jpg

Surprisingly, right after the incident, his unit initially thought they might have to MEDEVAC him due to the shot, but once they sat him down and conducted an assessment they realized that the projectile had not penetrated through his vest and all he needed to do was replace his front ESAPI plate. They did that and he was returned right back to his patrol.

20130919-073602.jpg

The plate was returned to SGT Morrissey courtesy of the Joint Trauma Analysis and Prevention of Injury in Combat Program at Ft Detrick which funds collection and analysis of PPE. Although it’s a joint program, the actual analysis is conducted by personnel from Program Executive Office Soldier to determine how well it performs against real threats and to use the information to make better armor systems in the future.

According to COL Marilyn Brew (USA) a PM at JTAPICP, the program has been around since 2006. She related that in addition to Armor Plates, they also analyze soft armor, helmets and other armor items, regardless of the service of origin. Amanda Perry of the Technical management directorate explained that they have over 70,000 data points in their database.

This was a great opportunity for SGT Morrissey to meet the men and women behind the equipment that saved his life. Conversely, the team at PEO Soldier had a chance to put a face on the work that they do.

SGT Morrissey took the opportunity to thank everyone at PEO Soldier. He explained that prior to the visit, he had no idea that a place like PEO Soldier even existed but said that he would spread the gospel once he returned to his unit at Ft Bragg.

When I asked him about his PPE his answer was simple, “It Works.” He went on to tell me that prior to this incident he was no fan of body armor, but now? “If it wasn’t for this equipment, I’d be dead.” And that pretty much sums it up, doesn’t it?

20130919-073733.jpg

SGT Morrissey was accompanied to the ceremony by wife Nikki and battle buddy SPC Samuel Walley.

20130919-073834.jpg

SSD wishes SGT Morrissey and his lovely wife well as they will soon become parents. We’d also like to thanks PEO Soldier for the opportunity to visit their facility and cover this story.

DSEi – NFM

Thursday, September 12th, 2013

These vests were built by NFM as a sub to Sagem as part of the SmartVest program currently being undertaken by the BeNeLux. Sagem is also working on the next generation of the French soldier system, FELIN.

20130912-081023.jpg

Underneath these outer vests named LCVA and LCVB, the Soldier wears a fragmentation or soft armor vest. Along with the integrated vest seen to the right, these four vests make up the system which is joined by three packs including a 100 liter 48 hour pack. The packs share an integrated waist belt that can be used with the vests as well as used alone as a cartridge belt.

20130912-081042.jpg

You will note the 6/12 technology as well as the Tubes which is used as a front closure on this vest rather than a zipper. Awhile back, we told you that FirstSpear had entered into a cooperative agreement with NFM to utilize their technology. This makes them the exclusive
Licensee of these technologies.

20130912-081104.jpg

Interestingly, these vests feature 6/12 technology on the front and PALS at the rear. This is so a user won’t place any comma devices at the rear and route the cables internally and possibly foul a quick release.

20130912-081119.jpg

Here you can see the internal cable management afforded by the 6/12.

20130912-081134.jpg

Above, is a shot of how the plates are carried. Under this concept, the Soldier dons he plates only when needed and can wear a much lower profile frag vest for other tasks.

DSEi – S&S Precision

Tuesday, September 10th, 2013

Also on hand in the Edgar Brothers booth are our friends from S&S Precision. It’s wild to travel all the way to London to see guys that are literally, right across town.

20130910-100431.jpg

They’ve produced a variant of the PlateFrame that accommodates the British plates along with a PlateSock.

20130910-100832.jpg

S&S Precision is also exhibiting their new shoulder straps and cummerbund for the very first time. Under development and test for the past few months, these items utilize mesh and padding for hot environments where waterproof webbing is not required.
