Australians to Deploy in New Camo Soon

Monday, October 22nd, 2012

Australian troops have been wearing MultiCam uniforms for a couple of years now. Concurrently, they’ve worked with Crye Precision to develop a distinctive Australian version of the MultiCam pattern as they had with the British military’s Multi Terrain Pattern.

According to a report on News.com.au, this new pattern is ready and will be fielded soon to Australian troops. Troops from the 7th Battalion (7RAR) along with members of the RAAF’s airfield Defence Guards will deploy in the next few weeks.

Defence Materiel Minister Jason Clare related that they have ordered an initial run of 3600 Operational Combat Uniforms worth $780,000. Additionally, they plan to order 5500 more next year from producer Pacific Brands WorkWear Group in West Footscray, Victoria from fabric milled by Bruck Textiles in Wangaratta.

Unfortunately, still no photos of the Australian MultiCam Pattern which I am told is all but indistinguishable from standard MultiCam.

As reader Phillip pointed out, this is the new AMP. When I first saw it awhile back I discounted it as I had expected the Australian version to be more distinguishable from its MultiCam base. But I checked with someone who would know and they said this looks correct as AMP.

Comparison tests will be conducted soon to compare the pattern to standard Polish Army wz.92 “PANTERA” camo.

Danes Choose Revision’s Batlskin Cobra Helmet

Thursday, October 11th, 2012

Earlier today, Revision announced that the Danish Army has issued a 7-year contract to them for Batlskin Cobra Helmets which include the Batlskin Modular Head Protection system (high-performance liner, ergonomic Retention System and multipurpose Front Mount). The Batlskin Cobra Helmet is made from ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene.

Deliveries will commence with an initial 4,335 Batlskin Cobra helmet systems to be delivered to the Danish Defence Acquisition and Logistics Organization (DALO), which will have the option to purchase additional Batlskin helmet-mounted components including the Batlskin Visor and Mandible Guard.

According to Revision they were awarded the Danish contract for a lighter-weight, blunt force, blast and ballistic higher protection level helmet after being down-selected to one of only several competitors able to fulfill this requirement. Testing of the Batlskin system was conducted at the Danish army test center with involvement from Army and Air Force military branches and Revision ultimately won the bid with high technical compliance scores, favorable end-user trials which were weighted at 60% of the evaluation and good price/value for this state-of-the-art head protection system.

“Revision is proud to have been awarded this contract to supply the Danish Military with our lightweight, high-performance polyethylene helmets and satellite Batlskin components—proof that we are advancing in our mission to meet the needs of the modern-day soldier fighting on today’s battlefield,” said Jonathan Blanshay, CEO of Revision. “Our readiness to supply next-generation helmets that meet both current and future operational environments is the culmination of many years of research and development of new materials, a strong design focus on protection systems that not only integrate seamlessly but can be customized for various military customers, and innovative manufacturing processes. The ability to produce both highly-specialized, polyethylene composite helmet shells at Revision’s Composite Center of Excellence as well as more traditional aramid helmets at our Newport facility enables us to quickly iterate helmet solutions to meet our global customers’ program requirements.”

Applied Orange – High Performance Combat Sock Summer

Friday, September 21st, 2012

Dutch combat clothing producer Applied Orange has introduced their new High Performance Combat Sock Summer. They are made from a blend of Cordura, CoolMax and Silver Nanoparticles to control fungal growth.

About a month ago, they sent me a pair and I have worn them several times. They worked as advertised and I didn’t notice any hot spots in a variety of footwear. Granted, I didn’t wear them with new boots, and the ones that I did wear were well broken in, but I can tell that you aren’t going to run into any issues with these.

Up front I’ll tell you that I was a bit put off by the knee high design. Additionally, I’m used to socks with a thicker nap. However, there are explanations for both of these features. According to AO, both British and Dutch troops like to turn the tops down over the tops of their boots. Fair enough. It’s a different style than I’m used to. Additionally, the thin sock will dry much faster in the field. One of the issues with sock featuring thick naps is getting them to dry, particularly in a hot-wet environment.

Overall, I like them. They are intended as a hot weather sock and AO told me that they have a winter sock coming soon.

Available in four sizes, these are manufactured in the EU and are available from ao-store.com/high-performance-socks

Strike – Hold! Covers The Jerven Fjellduken

Tuesday, September 11th, 2012

Norway’s Jerven Fjellduken has been described elsewhere as a “space blanket on steroids.” Strike-Hold! recently published a write up on the Mountain Tarp which is constructed from a non-breathable, aluminum-lined water and wind-proof material. Available in 5 different models, it can be used as a shelter or sleeping bag.

The coolest thing about the Fjellduken is its specialized camo pattern. As you can see, it’s well suited to Norway’s mountainous terrain.
