CMC Triggers Fires Back

Monday, May 23rd, 2016

Every trade show there’s industry gossip going around and the NRA Annual Meeting was no different. This time it was hate for CMC triggers and Mossberg for suing pretty much anyone that makes a drop in AR trigger.  Drop in triggers are pre-assembled packages that can be inserted into an AR-style lower receiver and, after inserting the pins into place, offer an enhanced trigger over the Mil-SPEC model. The enhanced trigger and ease of use have made drop ins quite popular because they can be user installed with little to no difficulty.

As I understand it, the story goes that Mossberg bought the rights to the Chip McCormick (CMC, Chip McCormick, see where this is going?) patent, US 7,293,385 B2, a while back, and now Mossberg is on a tear, suing companies that they allege have violated their intellectual property rights. But, everyone is blaming CMC Triggers Corp.

According to a story on The Firearm Blog, these companies have been named in suits by Mossberg:

  • Black Rain
  • DOA Arms
  • Tactical Fire Control
  • Battle Tested Equipment
  • Patriot Ordnance Factory
  • RISE Armaments
  • T Vehr Manufacturing
  • Elftmann Gun Products

On Saturday evening, CMC Trigger Corp President Jack R Biegel issued this statement:

CMC Triggers is a Christian company, privately held and not owned by O.F. Mossberg or anyone else.

We pay our bills when they’re due including our royalty responsibility to O.F. Mossberg.

Fair competition in the market place is only fair if the playing field is level.

We proudly stand with them in their pursuit of what is right in regard to all the companies that infringe on their Patent.

Shame on anyone that would spin negatively O.F. Mossberg exercising their right under law to collect royalties.

Jack R Biegel, Pres. CMC Triggers Corp.

I have to say, I agree with him. IP ownership is IP ownership and we support those that protect what is their’s. What make some uncomfortable about this situation is that Mossberg bought the patent rather than creating a design themselves. Regardless, I don’t see how that nullifies their ownership of the IP. Whether they came up with it on their own, bought it for manufacturing use, or just purchased it as an investment opportunity, it has value and they should be allowed to reap the rewards of that investment. Besides, most often in these cases, the IP owner is looking to ensure they are being paid for use of their IP. Most of these are settled before they even go to trial.

This will work itself, one way or another.

FirstSpear Friday Focus – FS and K2 Solutions Announce Canine Tactical Gear Line

Friday, May 20th, 2016

This week’s Friday Focus is an exciting announcement regarding FirstSpear’s work on a new line of K9 products.

K2 Solutions & FirstSpear Announce Canine Products Collaboration to Benefit Military and Law Enforcement Canines and Handlers

May 19, 2016, FirstSpear and K2 Solutions today announced a new collaboration to jointly develop, produce, and bring to market products that enhance the capabilities of military and law enforcement canines and their handlers. The agreement brings together one of the leading canine services and training providers with one of the most recognized names for innovation in military and tactical law enforcement individual equipment.

The partnership between FirstSpear and K2 leverages decades of tactical experience to enhance the efficiency of the modern American warfighter. This team will be rolling out a unique line of tactical canine gear in the summer of 2016, with special previews at the Special Operations Forces Industry Conference (SOFIC) in Tampa, Florida, on May 24, 2016.

“I was excited when K2 approached us about working together. We have been looking at the canine market for some time, but to do it right, the dog has to be viewed as the Operator. K2’s ability to bring forward canine product requirements through their numerous trainers and their ability to test canine performance in realistic situations has provided the missing part to solving the problems associated with the current products in this space,” said Scott Carver, FirstSpear CEO. “Additionally, we think this is the first time that the development process included a true look at the dog’s anatomy, resulting in more ergonomic systems that reduce fatigue as well as the long and short term stress placed on the canine’s body.”

“We are very excited about our partnership and the resulting products we are bringing to the warfighter and canine handler. Our requirements are driven by our military and police forces, and our gear is designed, manufactured and distributed in America.” says Dr. Heidi Alvey, R&D Scientist at K2.

SPARTANAT – GEAR Made in Denmark: VERDANDE.EU

Saturday, May 14th, 2016

During IWA I met the guys from the Austrian gear blog, SPARTANAT. They mentioned that they had been conducting interviews with various European gear manufacturers. They thought SSD readers might be interested and I agreed. Please let us know what you think.

GEAR Made in Europe: VERDANDE.EU

SPARTANAT: Verdande is a small gear manufacturer from Denmmark. What do you specialize in?
Verdande: Verdande specializes in designing and producing custom products for Military, Police and EMS persons/units. We are starting slowly to design standard products, in preparation to sell to international dealers, but most work we do is still custom based.

SPARTANAT: How long have you manufactured gear?
Verdande: As a company we started aprox 2014. But the footwork started around 2006 when we was in the Danish infantry and had reached a point when the gear we needed to get the job done, either was very bad or did not excist. So started to learn how to sew on a old Pfaff 230 sewingmachine. And then learning everything by ourself and slowly getting better and better machines to make the gear.

SPARTANAT: You have a significant feeling for design. Where does this come from?
Verdande: It is a mix of our personal experience from deployments to KFOR, Iraq, ISAF and seeing the different needs to different missions ranging from a Police mission to combat. Trying on your own body to walk with gear that you could easily remove 40% of the weight if it was made in a different way.

But it is also a mix of our customers idea when they come with an idea that will make their job easier so they can focus on keeping themself and their collegues alive.

SPARTANAT: Anything you want to tell costumers?
Verdande: Our design goal is to make products that are lightweight, because the heavier your gear is the less ammo you can bring to the fight. Our products is also lowprofile because its hard to attack through small compound doors if your kit is to bulky. And we try to make things to the highest level of quality as possible because people lifes depend on it. In the Danish infantry we are being trained to be transparent and tell new soldiers from your own mistakes and experinences to make each other better. This is something we have also taking with us into our company and we know there is a lot of new gearmakers around Europe and while other companies might not be willing to share information how to do things then you are always velcome to ask us a question. We see a lot of european gearmakers that are still on a hobby based platform but have potential to something bigger. We are just a message away 🙂

SOLSYS: Why Verdande?
Verdande: The name Verdande was chosen because we wanted something from the Norse mythology because this is a part of our country’s history and we chose the Norse name Verdande and our logo is the tree Yggdrasil.

Joe Carley Joins Team Vortex

Wednesday, May 11th, 2016

Vortex Optics of Middelton, Wisconsin is proud to announce the addition of Joe Caley to their small and select cadre of sponsored shooters.

Joe served in the US Army from 1990 to 2011 as an enlisted Infantryman, Cavalry Scout and Infantry Officer. Joe was severely wounded in Iraq in 2009. As a result he spent two years in hospitals for his second TBI, several surgeries for his legs, feet, a spinal injury and vestibular paresis. With the help of his doctors and therapists they were able to train and calibrate a Bioness System that allows him to climb obstacles, hills and walk and traverse mountain trails.

A year ago, Joe was approached by a friend at AMU asked him to shoot a PRS match. Joe jumped at the chance and hasn’t looked back. At time of writing he is 19th in Tactical Division, placed 9th at Mammoth Sniper Challenge and was invited to shoot in the exclusive Allegheny Sniper Challenge in Seneca Rocks, WV. Joe plans to move to the open division in 2017.

“Competing in PRS and tactical matches is challenging for most able bodied competitors, I often get told by other Shooters that they don’t know how I do it, and though they are beat up and tired they can’t possibly go and complain about it. A lot of times I show them the burn marks on my skin that the devices give me from putting electrical impulses through my legs. I don’t complain, I wear the scars with pride because I’m out there competing and not sitting around feeling sorry for myself. I enjoy meeting the many competitors and learning new things from all the top shooters. Most rewarding to me is when someone comes up and tells me they had no idea I had those injuries because I wear long pants to cover my equipment. This makes me feel great because I’m not looking for attention. I am just looking for a new normal.

Along the way I’ve had some great help with PRS and shooting, Vortex Optics being one that always got me some great optics to use, but now as of April I was notified that I am now one of the only sponsored match shooters of Vortex Optics. I know this is a huge honor because this family of shooters is very small and they are world and national champions. I feel fortunate to have the backing of Vortex and their entire staff”
