OR – Beyond

Beyond is quite a hit at Outdoor Retailer Winter Market. About a year or so ago, I sat down with front man Rick Elder and he shared his brand strategy with us. I know a lot of you have been chomping at the bit wanting to see product, and it’s here. For example, you may remember the Helios Alpha Jacket we showed you over last summer was recently featured in “Outside” magazine. It’s paired with a Brokk pant, a lightweight, super breathable, technical outdoor pant that features articulated knees.

They’ve also introduced both a softshell pant and jacket in the Rig. They both utilize a proprietary fabric and the pant integrates a proprietary 2-way stretch Cordura. Naturally, they are articulated and have several features that we will cover over the next few weeks.

In fact, the booth is packed with new styles. They pride themselves on helping their customers survive in any environment in the world and they are investing in new tech and design to make that more than just a desire. Beyond looks at themselves as a tech company who happens to specialize in the medium of specialized clothing. Garments are being wear tested in the environment they are built for and designs updated real time based on feedback. With a 90 day development cycle, they are nimble enough to give the customer exactly what they want.

You may notice a bit of an urban design influence but colorways are limited edition so if you see something you want, you’d better jump on it before it sells out because the next time it’s offered it may well be in a different color combination.

Naturally, this isn’t the case for the Mission community. Products for this group are customized for the purpose and colors are available as needed. As for the term ‘Mission Community’ I can’t think of a better way to describe it. It isn’t limited to military, LE, or contractors, but also encompasses First Responders, SAR and even NGOs. It’s that group of users that go beyond recreation.

I visited Beyond’s headquarters in November and got to take a peak behind the curtain as they developed several of the designs I saw today at OR. Beyond keeps one leg planted firmly in the outdoor market and this drives their innovation engine. As mission customers we reap the benefits of this focus. You need to keep a constant eye on Beyond. New products will be constantly hitting the street.

Brand & Oppenheimer Acquires Performance Textiles, Inc

Tuesday, January 21st, 2014

RED BANK, N.J. – January 21, 2014 – Brand & Oppenheimer Co., Inc. (B&O), a leading textile converter, today announced it has acquired the assets of Performance Textiles, Inc., a leading supplier of high-performance fabrics engineered for domestic and export customers, some of whom have worked with the company since its inception in 1988. The acquisition was sponsored by Praesidian Capital, which is an investor in B&O.

The consensual acquisition will complement B&O’s textile capabilities with a diversified product line targeted to sports, recreational products, high visibility work-wear, commercial, military and government end uses. Founded by Bill Gerrow and Peter Sullivan, Performance Textiles has an industry reputation for designing and producing some of the best fabrics available in the market. Safety, maximum performance, and durability continue to be the main focus and are critical for fabrics that are destined for use in parachutes, hot air balloons, and industrial protective vests.

“Performance Textiles is a unique and well established company in our industry with similar production processes and suppliers to ours,” stated Dan Pezold, B&O President and CEO. “The company has distinguished itself as a technology leader, and its technical expertise along with strong customer and supplier relationships are valued additions to our business. We believe our combined resources will benefit everyone in the textile supply chain.”

“We look forward to the new opportunities that come with joining the Brand & Oppenheimer family. Our combined resources will allow us to serve our customers with new and different textile solutions,” Gerrow stated. “What will not change, however, is the excellent service and development of textile technology solutions to which our customers have become accustomed over the past 25 years.”

According to Jason Drattell, Founding Partner of Praesidian, “Since our initial investment in B&O, the company has attracted new management and developed a more strategic focus. We believe that the acquisition of Performance Textiles is an important step in that strategic plan.”

The Safariland Group Adds Innovative Sons Trauma Kit to its Life-Saving Offerings

Sunday, January 19th, 2014

When we walked into the Safariland booth at SHOT Show, I was really surprised to see Phokus Research Group set up right in the middle. And, they were being bombarded by potential customers. The SONS Trauma Kit is a perfect pairing with a plate carrier and Safariland offers several.

ONTARIO, California – The Safariland Group announces today an agreement with Phokus Research Group to distribute the innovative Sons Trauma Kit to its public safety customers. These kits feature a low-profile, flat design at only one-half inch thick and about one-half pound in weight, and offers quick accessibility for life-saving first responder treatment. They are extremely durable and uniquely carried comfortably and securely behind the operator’s ballistic trauma plate or under concealable armor and easily removed when needed. The Sons Trauma Kit is offered in two standard sizes with a total of five varieties to offer kits for various missions or team preferences.

“The SONS Trauma Kit is a perfect complement to our body armor solutions,” said Todd Mackler, Vice President of Body Armor for The Safariland Group. “This innovative kit frees up valuable duty space for operators while providing essential life-saving tools. This product is a true innovation that changes the playing field in terms of carrying first responder life-saving trauma kits, as this product is not merely carried, but it is “worn” as an extension of the user’s ballistic vest.”

Packed in heavy-duty medical-grade vinyl and machine pressure sealed with RF-welded seams, it creates weatherproof protection for the critical medical supplies inside. The Sons Trauma Kits follow all Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC) Guidelines and Protocols and feature high-quality, combat-proven components. The contents are packed around injury patterns in order of priority for care and the patent-pending design includes a pull?tab and rip?cord for quick deployment. These highly durable trauma kits are immediately accessible, allowing for fast treatment when seconds count. All kits are designed to last 24-30 months. The Sons Trauma Kit has been proven in Afghanistan and Iraq for four years and now this product is available for tactical teams and law enforcement patrol officers.

The First Responder Trauma Kit is 9” x 12”, less than one-inch thick and weighs approximately one-half pound. This version is ideal for tactical teams to wear in their vest plate pocket behind the operator’s ballistic plate. The First Responder Low-Visibility Trauma Kit is 6” x 9”, less than one-inch thick and weighs approximately one-half pound. This version is ideal for patrol officers to insert into the soft trauma plate pocket of their concealable vest, store in a glove compartment, insert into a cargo pants pocket, or keep in a gear bag.

The Sons Trauma Kits will be available at dealers and distributors of the Safariland Group in February. MSRPs are as follows.

Opinion & Order – Kevin Brittingham and Lynsey Thompson v. AAC & Remington

Tuesday, January 14th, 2014

If you’ve been waiting for the big SHOT Show, industry insider buzz, I’d say this is it.

We recently informed you that Advanced Armament Corp founder and his associate Lynsey Thompson and won their two-year-long court battle with AAC’s new owners Remington ask Freedom Group aka FGI. Now, we have full access to Judge Katherine Forrest’s opinion. It’s quite the read and she didn’t pull any punches in reaching her verdict or explaining it.

Interestingly, the judge issued the document on Brittingham’s 40th birthday. Talk about a birthday present. Based on conversations with him the judgement could be in excess of $14 Million, but considering the amount he was still owed couple with what he has paid out in legal fees and personal pain, I’d say that it isn’t outrageous. It also lifts any non-compete restrictions, so for Kevin Brittingham, it’s “game on!”

Read it all for yourself by downloading it here: Brittingham Opinion & Order.

Gene Higdon Releases Statement Regarding His Relationship With HSGI

Monday, January 13th, 2014

Yesterday, Gene Higdon called me to tell me that he would be releasing a statement regarding his decision to leave High Speed Gear Inc. I’ve personally known Gene for over 15 years and he’s always been very forthright. When he had told me a year ago that he had sold the company in order to give it some room to grow and perhaps be able to take some time away from what had become his life, I understood. He’s been hard at it since before I met him. I’d say that he will be missed, but it sounds like he’s not going away, he’s just making a change, I do wish both my friend Gene and the new owners of HSGI good luck!

Today I take the opportunity to inform you that I have am leaving High Speed Gear. My wife as previous owner and myself as Founder/past CEO, words cannot convey nor express the gratitude towards the support and patronage that this community has bestowed to HSGI. High Speed Gear has been under new management, as it was sold in September 2012. Since it’s creation in 1999, HSGI has grown beyond Becky and myself’s expectations and for personal reasons, it had come time to pass the torch. In the best interest of the company, I remained on as a consultant since the transition. My contract has expired, and it’s now time for the new HSG to fulfill it’s own destiny to create it’s values and strategy.

Again, words cannot express the the gratitude for the support and patronage. It has been an Honor to make friends in the Industry as well as most of all, it’s valued customers and outstanding Dealers. More importantly, to have the privilege to support our Troops and Civilians alike in all aspects. Needless to say, I will not be leaving the community entirely.

Sincerely,

Gene Higdon
Founder of HSGI.
