Kromek Launches New Alpha Beta Probe to Upgrade the D5 RIID

Wednesday, November 22nd, 2023

November 22nd 2023

Kromek, the designer and manufacturer of radiation detectors, based in Sedgefield Co. Durham, today launches a new Alpha Beta probe attachment to its ground-breaking handheld D5 RIID, already the world’s most portable and sensitive handheld Gamma and Neutron detector. The probe connects directly to the D5 RIID and enables all types of isotopes to be detected by a single portable device. The upgraded D5 RIID has been proven to meet the British and US DEF-STAN and MIL-STD requirements.

This revolutionary development gives the D5 RIID a capability even superior to the ground-breaking performance available at its launch in 2021. With a small form factor, ergonomic design and easy to read graphical display, the probe can be held in one hand for prolonged scanning missions and is compact enough to be used in any scanning location. The system also has a standoff bracket, so that the detector is not contaminated by Alpha or Beta particles.

The Alpha Beta Probe front/rear

The D5 RIID can operate in different modes while scanning and monitoring all radiation types: In Search Mode, the user can view real time counts per second with Alpha and Beta counts, shown alongside Gamma and Neutron counts. In Timer Mode it is possible to see how many Alpha and Beta counts occur in a set time period. And in the Threshold setting there is a handy visual bar to see how close the current Alpha and Beta counts are to the set threshold. These thresholds can be easily changed in the device settings.

The device also allows the user to enable and disable NORM (naturally occurring radioactive material) Suppression thanks to a special Kromek algorithm which allows for enhanced differentiation between normal background sources and true sources giving greater survey and reconnaissance capability. This algorithm can be enabled in the device settings, but otherwise the system defaults to a standard k sigma algorithm found in all Kromek detectors.

For additional levels of security, the user can also determine which settings on the D5 DIID are routine or restricted. Routine users can access any non-PIN protected settings, whereas authorised users have another layer of on-device customisation available with PIN protected settings.

One of the revolutionary new capabilities, perhaps the most, of the upgraded D5 RIID is the ability to set three different dose rate thresholds. The previous “High Dose Rate” setting is replaced to allow detection of low, medium and high radiation levels. Through the use of a reset button the D5 RIID can be rest in the field (or on site) rather than being brought back to a central location.

Kromek’s Product Manager Eve Paylor said: “From the outset of this upgrade we set out to keep the D5 RIID at the forefront of capability available to both the specialist and general user. Kromek believes there is a demonstrable need to detect even the lowest levels of Alpha, Beta and Gamma isotopes and neutrons in a single device to allow for rapid and accurate identification. By significantly improving the threshold capability from an already world leading position we have sought to improve operational availability and logistics and ease of use for the operator.”

“With the new Alpha Beta Probe, the D5 RIID is truly the most versatile handheld radiation detector available today. Conforming to the most rigorous British and American military, environmental and technical standards and with an exceptional degree of sensitivity and survivability, the device is suitable for use in the most challenging situations to detect all types of radioactive material. Its built-in endurance, ergonomic design and networked capability means that it is the most user-friendly device on the market. Kromek believes in constant review of our products we have to improve capability and operational utility. This upgrade does just that,” she said.

Sensor solution provider HENSOLDT receives green light for system design

Taufkirchen/Germany, 16 November 2023 – The PEGASUS signal intelligence (SIGINT) system is now entering the implementation phase with the design developed by sensor solution provider HENSOLDT. The Federal Office of Bundeswehr Equipment, Information Technology and In-Service Support (BAAINBw) has approved one of the most important project milestones – the so-called Critical Design Review (CDR) – and thus given the green light for the implementation of the system design.

In the CDR, representatives of the Bundeswehr, both from the public customer and the future user, examined the design of the SIGINT components of the PEGASUS weapon system. In a large number of individual presentations, the customer was given a detailed presentation of the implementation planning for its extensive requirements. At the same time, the progress of the overall project was communicated in various software and hardware demonstrations.

Subsequently, the subcontractor Lufthansa Technik, Hamburg, gave an impressive presentation on the planned integration of the resulting reconnaissance system into the aircraft and the associated conversion measures.

Jürgen Halder, Vice President Airborne SIGINT at HENSOLDT, said: “The close cooperation between the Bundeswehr and HENSOLDT since the beginning of the project activities guaranteed that the presented design was widely accepted. The underlying reconnaissance solution “KALAETRON Integral” offers a globally unique, high-performance reconnaissance capability based on powerful German key technology.”

Two years ago, HENSOLDT was awarded the contract to supply an airborne system for electronic signals intelligence on board Bombardier business jets based on its SIGINT system “Kalætron Integral”. The order is worth over one billion euros. HENSOLDT is acting as general contractor and bears overall responsibility for the realisation of the project. Lufthansa Technik, based in Hamburg, will act as a subcontractor, procuring the aircraft from the manufacturer Bombardier, including their modification, as well as fitting and integrating the reconnaissance system developed by HENSOLDT into the aircraft. In total, almost 30 companies, including many SMEs, from all over Germany are involved in the project as suppliers and partners.

Digital multi-domain communication put to the test

Immenstaad, 13 November 2023 – As part of the German Armed Forces’ “Timber Express 2023” exercise, sensor solution provider HENSOLDT has connected several flying platforms via data link and networked them with modern information systems. Using the EUA OPTARION mission support system, situational information could be reliably communicated between the NH90 and TIGER helicopters and other platforms such as the Tornado multi-role combat aircraft and the 2000 self-propelled howitzer without any changes to the aircraft. For the first time, the data was also continuously synchronised with the Bundeswehr’s new command information system.

“With the mission support system, we are able to integrate both existing and new platforms into the armed forces’ digital command and control network without any changes to the aircraft,” says Alex Irmscher, programme manager for ground stations at HENSOLDT. “We are working continuously with the Army Air Corps and the German Air Force to further advance command and control capabilities in the area of airborne systems and anchor them operationally alongside exercises.”

The advantages that the EUA OPTARION offers its users were successfully demonstrated for the third time as part of “Timber Express 2023”. As a link between reconnaissance and operational elements, relevant data could be communicated digitally along the sensor-to-effector chain. This interaction forms the basis for efficient command and control and the deployment of armed forces in an interoperable information and communication network.

New Name Announced for a Trusted Brand in the Tactical Industry: Mehler Systems

Monday, November 13th, 2023

Fulda, Germany, 13.11.2023

Mehler Vario System today introduced Mehler Systems, a significant milestone in the journey that brings all the company’s brands under one roof. This new name—Mehler Systems—unites the already renowned brands of UF PRO and Lindnerhof with that of Mehler Protection, itself a new brand that combines all existing ballistic-protection activities of Mehler Systems into one entity.

The move harmonises the name, image, and branding of the entire Group as a leading provider of high-end protection and tactical-equipment systems for worldwide defence and law enforcement customers.

The new brand-name Mehler Systems captures the essence of the total Group’s purpose as a provider of comprehensive solutions for defence and security missions of a challenging nature, but it does more than that. It also speaks to a commitment to continuously evolve and innovate to even better serve clients. “Under Mehler Systems, our new Group brand, we will present a new, unified, and comprehensive Group face to the market. The Mehler Systems brand stresses the breadth and depth of our complementary and corresponding capabilities throughout the Group in each of our companies, under one common roof”, said Mehler Systems CEO Thomas Homberg.

In a step parallel to the adoption of the new brand-name Mehler Systems and the Group-level uniting resulting from it, Mehler Systems has created Mehler Protection through a brand-blending of Mehler Vario System, Mehler Engineered Defence, and Mehler Law Enforcement. This new sub-brand specialises in providing body and platform armour.

Christian Vahldiek, Managing Director of Mehler Engineered Defence, expressed enthusiasm for this collaborative branding effort. “We are excited about this joint initiative and the opportunity to combine our expertise in platform protection with the body armour offerings under a single brand,” he said.

Importantly, however, the brand-blending of the three companies does not alter their individual legal structures.

Although Mehler Systems is now the Group’s overall brand, Mehler Protection, UF PRO, and Lindnerhof will continue as specialised sub-brands, according to UF PRO Managing Director Jože Kastelic and Linderhof Managing Director Jakob Kolbeck. “Each sub-brand brings its unique skillset and established reputation as a provider of integrated, top-quality solutions,” they said in a joint statement.

“Every sub-brand under Mehler Systems is committed to delivering excellence,” Homberg said. “We continuously utilise our combined strengths to ensure that you receive the best. Our dedicated customer group, who risk their health and lives for society’s security, is the reason we continuously strive for innovation. We are persistent in our efforts to enhance equipment and system performance that match the ever-changing mission- and threat-environments of our customers.”
