Rheinmetall Pressing Ahead with F-35A project: AERO-Bildungs GmbH Commissioned with Technical Training for Production Mechanics

Saturday, June 8th, 2024

Rheinmetall is pressing ahead with its F-35A programme. The technology group has commissioned AERO-Bildungs GmbH to provide technical training for the production mechanics for the centre fuselage section of the F-35A in Weeze.

AERO-Bildungs GmbH is a partner specialised in the field of technical training within the aviation sector. The mid-sized family business located in Oberpfaffenhofen in Bavaria will assist with planning of the training and the implementation of basic technical training. This shall enhance the knowledge and skills initially learnt at Northrop Grumman in the USA not only to be applied in Weeze, but also to be passed on to other employees in the same quality, thus enabling a transfer of knowledge. In cooperation with experienced Rheinmetall trainers, a dedicated training and competence center is being set up in Weeze to ensure sustainable knowledge building and ongoing employee qualification.

The commissioning of AERO-Bildungs GmbH as of April 2024 is the first step towards further integrating German companies into the F-35A delivery and supply chain for the Weeze site. It underlines the Duesseldorf-based technology group’s commitment to increasing German added value within the programme.

Rheinmetall has been commissioned by Northrop Grumman to produce at least 400 centre fuselage sections for the F-35A fighter aircraft in 2023. Extensive infrastructure measures are currently underway in Weeze, North Rhine-Westphalia, near the Dutch border. The aim is to complete the production facility in spring 2025 and then start production in summer 2025.

About Rheinmetall Aviation Services:
Rheinmetall Aviation Services GmbH (RAS), based in Bremen, was founded at the beginning of 2019 for strategic cooperation with Sikorsky in the Heavy Transport Helicopter (STH) procurement project. RAS has been working in close cooperation with the German Air Force at three different airfields since 2021/2022. RAS is seamlessly integrated into the German Air Force’s organisational structure and successfully takes over support, maintenance and repair of the CH-53G fleet.

Another important milestone was achieved in 2023 when RAS, in cooperation with Northrop Grumman and Lockheed Martin, entered into the production of centre fuselage sections for the F-35A. With an investment volume in the three-digit million euro range, Rheinmetall is currently building a state-of-the-art factory at the Weeze site in North Rhine-Westphalia for the production of at least 400 F-35A centre fuselage sections for the German Air Force and allied nations.

A new era in the air dimension will begin for Rheinmetall with the completion of the factory by the end of the first quarter of 2025 and the subsequent start of production and delivery of the first centre fuselage sections as of the first quarter of 2027.

Lindnerhof Taktik Introduces a New Series of Multi-Pouches and Matching Panels – Sophisticated Design for Efficient Organisation

Friday, June 7th, 2024

LENGGRIES, GERMANY (06.06.2024)

Lindnerhof-Taktik has introduced a new series of Multi-Pouches and two matching Panels today to provideperfect organizational solutions.

These products offer a number of improvements overprevious generations and also innovations with regard to the brand new items – all to meet industry standards. Some of the key features are a streamlined and efficientdesign, the use of slim and colour-matched webbing anda MX material backside for all PA Pouches (PA109/II, PA022, PA054/II,PA023, PA053/II).

This along with the use of standard laser-cut MOLLE slots and slim 20mm PALS straps not only ensuresfunctionality but also reduces the weight of the Pouchesby approximately 5-10% and allows easier mounting, especially on reinforced systems like the Curv ® Belts. The front of these Pouches also feature a standard MOLLE/PALS webbing (20mm) on the entire front for attaching additional equipment.

It is also important to highlight the improvements Lindnerhof-Taktik has made to the colour matrix to achieve a more attractive appearance by replacing the solid colour straps with matching camouflage straps in Multicam®, 3fb Flecktarn and 5fb Flecktarn.

The LT373 Multi-Pouch has a slightly different approach as it is more of an additional Pouch for carrying systems such as Plate Carriers and Micro Rigs – here it can be attached using hook and loop fastener but can also be removed easily thanks to the quick-release buckles. Thereverse all-round zipper allows full opening andtherefore enables the use as a Medic-Pouch.

Back to the similarities, there are shared features such as a quick-opening strap on the top that allows the Pouch to be opened with a single pull, reverse zippers and several additional loops on the outside for attaching more gear. The loop surface lined inside is another common feature that provides the basis for the versatile use of the other new products, the Panels MX374 and MX375. As a single or multi version, this is the perfect solution for carrying all kinds of small equipment that need to be perfectly organised and have a secure fit in the Pouches.

This new series of Multi-Pouches and Panels offers a variety of models in different sizes, shapes and layouts to choose from. The available models are as follows:

NIOA Opens Office on US Army Base

Wednesday, June 5th, 2024

NIOA’s American company is open for business in the heart of the US Army’s garrison for armaments development and procurement.

In officially opening the company’s office at Picatinny Arsenal in New Jersey, NIOA Group CEO Robert Nioa said the event marked a shared commitment to Australia-US security objectives and defence industry advancement.

“Co-development, co-production and co-sustainment within the allied network starts with co-location,” Mr Nioa said.

“NIOA is committed to expanding its participation in and collaboration with the US defence industrial base to enhance US and allied global security objectives.

“Opening a permanent office at the US Army’s centre for munitions research and technology provides a gateway for us to grow our presence in the US and work more closely with America’s long-standing allies, particular its AUKUS partners in the UK and Australia.

“We are excited about the opportunities this will bring, not only for our company but for the broader goals of our allied defence forces.”

Picatinny Arsenal Commanding General Maj-Gen John Reim and the NIOA Group’s US-based Advisory Board member Ellen Lord assist NIOA Group CEO Robert Nioa in cutting the ribbon at the official opening of NIOA’s office at the US Army’s New Jersey base.

Major-General John T Reim, Commanding General of Picatinny Arsenal and Joint Program Executive Officer Armaments and Ammunition, joined Mr Nioa, senior Picatinny military officials, NIOA executives and other US defence company executives for the ceremonial ribbon cutting.

Picatinny Arsenal has a workforce of more than 6000 across key organisations such as Joint Program Executive Office Armaments and Ammunition (JPEO A&A) and the Combat Capability Development Command Armaments Center (DEVCOM-AC).

The Picatinny tenancy is a significant step in NIOA’s US growth plan which included the 2023 acquisition of key US Army supplier, Tennessee-based Barrett Firearms, and the recent teaming agreement with California-headquartered Aerojet Rocketdyne.

NIOA also has long-standing relationships with American companies such as General Dynamics, Northrop Grumman and Winchester through its operation of the Lake City ammunition plant, each of which also have offices at Picatinny.

Earlier this year, leading US defence industry executive Dan Olson was appointed to the NIOA Group’s Advisory Board joining former US Under Secretary of Defense for Acquisition and Sustainment, the Hon. Ellen Lord.

NIOA’s residence at Picatinny comes as the US Department of Defense reaffirmed its commitment to double down on strengthening defence industrial resilience in the Indo-Pacific.

The “Statement of Principles for Indo-Pacific Defense Industrial Base Collaboration” released by the Pentagon on Friday endorsed action “to expand industrial base capability, capacity, and workforce; increase supply chain resilience; and promote defense innovation”.

Carrington Textiles’ Portuguese Factory Cuts CO2 Emissions by 45% with Biomass Boiler Installation

Wednesday, June 5th, 2024

Adlington, United Kingdom: Global workwear textile manufacturer Carrington Textiles, along with its joint venture in Portugal, MGC, has achieved significant carbon emission reductions following the installation of a biomass boiler at the site in 2023. This initiative has allowed the factory to produce 95% of the steam needed for manufacturing while reducing natural gas consumption by 70%, marking a substantial step towards more sustainable textile production practices.

A biomass boiler is a device that uses organic materials, such as wood chips, agricultural residues, or other biological matter, to produce heat and energy. This technology serves as an alternative to fossil fuels, significantly cutting down on greenhouse gas emissions.

MGC’s biomass boiler uses responsibly sourced wood chips from local forests within a 50 km radius of the factory, all certified by SURE (Sustainable Resources). This raw material consists of leftover wood intended for the paper industry that needs to be removed to prevent fires. The ash generated in the process is used as soil fertiliser after being treated to avoid soil contamination.

This new equipment is carbon neutral and has allowed the textile manufacturer to decrease its overall CO2 emissions by 45% compared to 2022.

Jose Melo, MGC’s Managing Director, commented on the achievement: “The installation of the biomass boiler marks a significant milestone in our journey towards driving energy efficiency in our manufacturing processes. The substantial reduction in our CO2 emissions is a testament to our commitment to environmental stewardship.”

Comprehensive Environmental Initiatives

Beyond the biomass boiler, MGC has implemented a series of initiatives that showcase its commitment to sustainability. This includes reduction in water consumption by over 13%, waste and plastic usage reduction, environmental management training to all employees, energy management systems, wastewater treatment to remove microplastics and PFAs, to name a few.

These initiatives and the implementation of the biomass boiler illustrate Carrington Textiles and MGC’s dedication to investing in technologies that reduce their impact on the environment.

Partnership with Lithuania: Rheinmetall and Minister of Economy and Innovation, Auštime Armonaite, Sign Further Agreement for a New Factory

Tuesday, June 4th, 2024

Lithuania takes another step towards strengthening its defence sector. The Lithuanian Minister of the Economy and Innovation, Aušrine Armonaite, has signed an agreement delineating the arrival of Rheinmetall, the German military industry giant, to Lithuania. The project has been granted the status of state importance.

“Rheinmetall establishing operations in Lithuania is a significant step towards meeting our country’s immediate defence and security needs. It will help us to ensure uninterrupted access to essential weapons and ammunition, as the products that European defence needs will be produced on Lithuanian soil. With an investment of more than EUR 180M, the new plant is also expected to create at least 150 new jobs,” Minister Armonait? said.

The site of the investment project should be announced in the upcoming weeks. The plant is expected to produce tens of thousands of rounds of ammunition per year.

“We are grateful to have been selected by Lithuania as a partner of the defence industry. We are pleased to be able to make a contribution to national sovereignty in the field of ammunition,” said Maximilian Froch, Head of Strategic Programme Organisation International at Rheinmetall AG.

Armin Papperger, CEO of Rheinmetall AG: “We at Rheinmetall are very grateful for this long-term partnership with Lithuania. It confirms us once again in our claim to be one of the pillars of national and international security provision.”
To ensure Lithuania’s security, the Ministry of the Economy and Innovation has also initiated legal amendments that facilitate the development of large-scale projects. Potential investors, including Rheinmetall, will be able to benefit from these new provisions.

The amendments simplify territorial planning, land procurement, and construction procedures. This will enable manufacturers in the defence industry to launch operations in Lithuania in the shortest possible time.

These amendments were drafted in cooperation with the Ministry of Defence, the Ministry of the Environment, and the Office of the Government. It is expected that the Lithuanian Parliament will adopt these regulations during this year’s spring session.

The ‘Green Corridor’ initiative for large-scale investment projects, developed by the Ministry of the Economy and Innovation and launched in 2021, makes it easier and quicker for investors to set up operations in Lithuania, granting their project a status of state importance and a 0% corporate tax rate for a period up to 20 years.
The Ministry of the Economy and Innovation has already signed contracts for 14 large-scale investment projects, which will create nearly 4,000 jobs and attract more than €1.25 billion in investment.

Taking Responsibility in the Air Dimension: Rheinmetall at the Aerospace Trade Fair ILA Berlin 2024

Monday, June 3rd, 2024

Rheinmetall will once again be one of the exhibitors at the aerospace trade fair ILA Berlin in 2024. The traditional exhibition will take place from 5 to 9 June 2024, right next to the capital’s BER airport in Berlin-Schoenefeld. “Taking responsibility in dimension air,” will be the motto for the Duesseldorf-based technology group and present, amongst other things, cannon-based air defence solutions (stationary and mobile), reconnaissance capabilities in air and space, effective instruments for increasing the combat effectiveness of established systems (loitering munition) and the industrialisation of high technology for Germany.

The highlights of Rheinmetall’s trade fair presentation in 2024 include:

Air defence system Skyranger 30: Ground-based air defence has become increasingly important for Europe, particularly against the backdrop of the war in the Ukraine. Numerous EU and NATO members, including Germany, have opted for Rheinmetall’s Skyranger 30 mobile air defence solution. The system offers an ideal combination of mobility, protection, flexibility and precision to meet the growing demands of challenging threat scenarios in near surroundings and within closer ranges. At the ILA, Rheinmetall will be showcasing the Skyranger 30 turret on the Boxer 8×8 armoured vehicle with an integrated guided missile. With this combination, the Skyranger 30 is ideally suited to decisively encounter current and future threats.

Laser weapon demonstrator (LWD): A laser weapon system – complementary to tube weapons and guided missiles – is particularly suitable for scaled defence against drones, swarms of drones, attacking speedboats or guided missiles at a close and even closer range. With the appropriate performance, such a system could also be used in future to destroy supersonic guided missiles and rockets as well as mortar and artillery shells. The LWD, which Rheinmetall AG is presenting at the ILA together with its cooperation partner MBDA Deutschland GmbH, was integrated on the German Navy’s frigate 124 “Sachsen” from June 2022 to September 2023. During these trials, the demonstrator performed impressively in more than 100 test firings on board. In future, it shall be further examined at the Weapons and Ammunition Technical Centre (WTD 91) in Meppen with regard to its development potential and risk minimisation.

Airborne reconnaissance system LUNA NG: Operational experience from the war in the Ukraine shows the crucial aspect of real-time reconnaissance in command and control. The LUNA NG (Luftgestützte Unbemannte Nahaufklärungsausstattung: Airborne unmanned close reconnaissance equipment – Next Generation) was developed precisely for this purpose. In 2023, Rheinmetall delivered such a drone on behalf of the German government to Ukraine for its defence campaign. It is one of the latest systems for unmanned airborne reconnaissance, classification and detection of objects. Thanks to its aerodynamic, ultra-light and highly stable design, the LUNA NG can easily handle twelve-hour missions. Rheinmetall is presenting the drone at the ILA with its expansion stages for engaging targets and the capability for vertical take-off and landing (VTOL). The LUNA NG with glide bomb on display at the ILA is one of several possible configurations.

Loitering munitions: Loitering munition (LM) combines the characteristics of drones and guided missiles. It increases the ability of infantry units to reconnoitre targets over a long distance in a target area. The infantry units can then precisely engage these targets at a distance and in a timely manner, yet at a time of their choosing. Rheinmetall and UVision have agreed to cooperate in order to customise and market the Hero family of loitering munition in Europe. At the ILA, both companies will be showcasing Hero LM systems in various sizes for different missions, including the corresponding launchers.

F-35 fuselage centre section production: The F-35 Lightning II is currently the most modern and powerful fighter aircraft in the world. At its heart is the fuselage centre section, which connects various critical systems, including weapon systems, avionics, hydraulic and electrical systems. Rheinmetall is currently building a state-of-the-art production facility in Weeze on the Lower Rhine area, where at least 400 of these fuselage centre sections are foreseen to be manufactured on behalf of its U.S. partner company Northrop Grumman, starting in mid-2025. Inside its ILA stand, the Duesseldorf-based group will be presenting the industrialisation of high technology for Germany in the form of various models, the F-35 fuselage centre section, the factory and various workstations.

The two-storey Rheinmetall stand at ILA Berlin 2024 is located at Dis G / 006. The renowned trade fair, which only opens its doors every two years, presents cutting-edge technology from all business areas of the international aviation industry. In 2022, it attracted more than 70,000 visitors.
