MATBOK Backhand GPS Carrier

Monday, April 23rd, 2012

MATBOK developed the Backhand GPS Carrier after they found that carrying your GPS on your weapon or your chest gets to be a pain. For example, sometimes you don’t have your weapon in front of you or you’re using an entirely different weapon system. A chest mounted GPS can also get in your way when you’re trying to climb or reaching for for your comms PTT. Their reasoning is that you will always have your hands with you no matter what job, or weapon system you’re using. It’s a simple, lightweight design that gives the user the ability to have their GPS with them at all times. Designed to accommodate the GARMIN Foretrex, it carries it on the back of either hand in the same manner as an altimeter. The Backhand GPS Carrier will also accept a wrist compass on the wrist strap.

Available in Coyote, Desert Digital, and MultiCam from matbock.com.

VELCRO USA Introduces New Silent Pouch Closure Solutions

Monday, April 23rd, 2012

At a recent range we were introduced to two new VELCRO USA options for closing pockets/pouches. They are almost completely silent and both options require tension to keep the VELCRO closure from opening but in slightly different ways. In our example on the video, this is done with elastic flaps of two different styles. However, the genius of the system is in the unidirectional hook component (HTH 719), so be careful when you are installing it. The hooks will need to face away the direction of opening. As you can see, a simple pull downward and either style of elastic flap can be opened.

Basically it comes down to whether or not you want the added operation of sewing the VELCRO to the elastic. VELCRO Brand VELSTRETCH (shown on the left) is designed for applications where the closure must expand and contract and is designed to provide about 55% stretch. This version won’t last quite as long as Loop 1100 since it abrades over time through cycling but then again, you don’t have to sew the loop on to standard elastic. What’s rally cool about this solution is that you just drop the flap straight down into place. Thanks to the unidirectional hook, you don’t have to load the VELCRO Brand VELSTRETCH. It holds everything in place and the stretch comes into play when you want to open the flap. A simple downward tug and release does the trick. However, the harder you pull against (as in upward) the unidirectional hook, the more the VELCRO Brand VELSTRETCH digs in.

On the other hand, continuing to sew mil-spec VELCRO loop (loop 1100) on to mil-spec elasticized webbing can offer a longer life and a stronger bond. It also can be opened in the same manner as traditional VELCRO closures by pulling straight out or up whereas the VELCRO Brand VELSTRETCH is very resistant to that type of operation. However, this is just as noisy as standard mil-spec VELCRO USA applications.

You could also adapt this style to more traditional fabric flaps by using elastic inserts or by anchoring the flaps to elastic. It may also be used in other applications as well such as pocket openings on some uniform items.

Nothing here is proprietary (other than the VELCRO USA materials) and anyone can adopt either solution. Be creative and show your clients that you can provide a silent VELCRO solution.

Off The Grid Concepts

Monday, April 23rd, 2012

One of the things we really like about Off The Grid Concepts is that they don’t shy away from a challenge. Last week we saw that they built a holster for a Smith & Wesson Model 327 TRR8 with integrated sight and frame rails.

Marz Tactical Modular Man Bag

Saturday, April 14th, 2012

Marz Tactical was at the Darley Defense Day on Ft Lewis last Thursday. They had a lot of interesting stuff there, some of which has been covered before. This is their take on a bail-out type bag. It’s modular, with different inserts available.

For more information on this and other pieces of Marz Tactical kit, check them out on Facebook or contact Duffy Cavanaugh, Duffy(at)Darley.com.

JAVRAN

Thursday, April 12th, 2012

We’ve been drooling over the JAVRAN website for a few weeks now and after talking it over, we couldn’t pick out just one thing to mention. They are a nylon company that was founded on the owner’s quest for the perfect camera bag. But now, they’re about more than just camera bags. They offer a wide variety of products and custom color options.

So just head on over and poke around a little. We think you’ll like what you see.

Every Other Chest Rig On The Planet Is Now Too Heavy

Wednesday, April 11th, 2012

‘Every Other Chest Rig On The Planet Is Now Too Heavy’ – That’s a pretty bold statement made recently by gear manufacturer High Ground as they introduced The Chest Rig. Even the name implies that there can be no other.

20120410-224510.jpg

The rig is reversible – MultiCam to Coyote and features integrated ITW buckles to allow instant transition from H-Harness Shoulder Straps to Plate Carrier integration. As you can see it’s PALS compatible and relies as much on the pouches for structural support as they do upon The Chest Rig. It’s as bare bones as it gets.

Yes, some of us have seen a similar product in the past from Crye Precision where users obtained extra AirLite cummerbund panels for the Jumpable Plate Carrier and attached them to the front in order to rapidly reconfigure loads. It wasn’t by design as much by user adaption and its difficult to obtain a JPC let alone an AirLite cummerbund. The major difference here is that this was designed to work this way from the outset and includes a chest rig H harness with articulated shoulder straps seen here. I’m sure it’s going to be popular but I’m just as sure that there will be detractors based on its similarity to the Crye design.
