Gore Military’s Lightweight Loft technology is a combination of PrimaLoft’s Fusion insulation (80g) hang in a Gore 2-layer Fast Pack membrane laminate. A comfortable softshell, it is also water resistant. It is not only wind proof but it can also quickly be packed. Because of the breathability it dries quickly and can be used to layer over wet garments to help dry via convection.

The Lightweight Loft has been adopted by USSOCOM as level 3B of PCU. The garment was designed by Patagonia and has been printed in several camo patterns including nIR protection.

Under development, the PJ Crash Axe is a modification of the SPAX which is a rescue tool that has seen wide spread use in DoD. The Crash Axe has a longer handle for increased leverage. Additionally, they’ve increased the cutting surface.

Featuring Black micarta handle, they’ve also incorporated a can opener-style cutter in the butt of the Axe. It’s a utilitarian tool that is well suited to breaching, rescue, as well as camp chore applications.

The Automatic Rescue Knife is an automatic design developed for the Coast Guard. It features a proprietary blade design that is similar to an eagle claw style but with a safety entry tip. The blade also integrates both standard cutting and serrations. Additionally, there is a glass breaker in the butt of the handle.

Ontario Knives now incorporates an open spine system into their folders. It means no trapped water or other debris gunking up the knife. You can use a weapon cleaning brush or just a quick blow and it’s clean.

Legged Squad Support System is sponsored by DARPA and manufactured by Boston Dynamics. MCWL will begin to conduct a series of Limited Technical Assessments later this year to begin to learn more about how this technology works with the Squad. This model weighs about 1200 lbs and carries 400 lbs. It’s also smarter and quieter than previous technologies.

The real win here is the Tactical Robotics Controller. Finally, there’s a common, government defined architecture that will control all tactical ground and some small unit air vehicles. Since the interfaces are nonproprietary, there will be one controller and all robotics vendors will build to this standard. The project has been so successful that both the Army and Marine Corps are teaming up to produce a CDD to turn this into a program of record.

The benefits are huge. TRC lowers cost, streamlines training and logistics and offers increased utility. For example, if a ground robot’s controller goes down, any other TRC can be used to take over.

Future developments include dual screens to allow the simultaneous control of two robots.

EFB has developed the AN/PRC154 Charger with side pan connector to allow one set of cables to both power a radio and end user device (EUD) as well as provide a data path. It was designed for Nett Warrior and there are currently in excess of 400 of these currently undergoing evaluation. The charger is low profile and they’ve developed a pouch specifically to accommodate it and the radio.

Based on that project, they are working with Fires Warrior to expand the personal LAN to include input from the Vector 21. This required a module to convert data from RS232 standard to USB. Once again, everything is controlled by the EUD.
