Darley GRF Expo – Rite Rescue

Thursday, March 21st, 2013

Rite Rescue was founded by three New City Firefighters and offers the coolest litter system I’ve seen in years. In fact, calling it a litter system would be under describing what it does. This modular system integrates two systems in one. The harness can be swapped between a hard plastic sled-type stretcher (Tactical) or a soft stretcher (Assault).

Additionally, the RAP (Remove and Protect) can instantly be hoisted thanks to the harness system as integrates an inflation system that immobilizes the patent’s head, neck and spine. These stretchers are currently the only ones on the market that are UL tested to the NFPA 1983 standards.

First Light USA’s Tomahawk Tactical Flashlights

Tuesday, March 12th, 2013

I’ve been a big fan of Tomahawk Tactical Flashlights for years now. Made by First Light USA, the style is unique. Its angle head design is optimized for a fist-style grip. Relying on LED lights, the Tomahawk offers versions in Red/Green (for blood-highlighting), Red, Blue, Red/Blue, Yellow-Green. The Red/Green mix is particularly interesting. Blood is a tough material to see under colored lights and medics were having a heck of a time differentiating blood and oil in night time IED incidents. For example, red light makes blood all but disappear and blue light turns blood black making it indistinguishable from oil. First Light worked on the issue and developed a great combination. Additionally, First Light offers the Tomahawk Task Light attachment for medics that can be configured as a Blue light for Fluorescein eye stain tests or UV light fluoresce certain fungal and bacterial infections.

Held at the ready, the buttons are within easy reach of your thumb and include momentary on/off, on/off and strobe settings. Using two CR123A batteries you should expect to get about 2 hours (highest setting) and 60 hours (lowest setting) for white light.

PTSD in SOF Personnel

Thursday, February 28th, 2013

This is a guest post by Jud Kauffman of ExBellum.com and I think it’s a pretty important topic. Jud served in the U.S. Navy for 8 years, first as an intelligence analyst and later as a Navy SEAL deploying multiple times throughout the Middle East on hundreds of combat missions. He later served as the National Program Manager for the Naval Special Operations Mentor Program, selecting and mentoring potential civilian SEAL, EOD, SWCC, and Diver candidates. He helped cofound The Great American Mud Run and Talosorion Security. In 2012, he founded ExBellum.com, a website aimed at connecting Special Operations veterans with civilian employers.

Sons Trauma Kits from Phokus Research Group

Sunday, February 24th, 2013

There are three variants of the Sons Trauma Kit.

Originally designed to fit in the plate pocket of an armor vest the initial military variant was soon augmented with an LE version. Not long ago they realized you could carry the Sons Trauma Kit in the hydration sleeve of a backpack and the hunter/outdoorsman model was born.
