Once you complete the web-based training you complete a test that provides instant feedback if you miss a question. When you pass the test it provides a completion certificate as well as notifying your training manager.

SOMA – SOTech

Sunday, December 16th, 2012

The Army has purchased thousands of the RAMMP (Rapid Access Modular Medical Panel) as well as the Sliver Medical Packs. But, what most medics don’t realize is that the pouches are designed to fit both both products. You can take a pouch from the RAMMP and mount it directly into the Sliver via hook and loop or MOLLE. Or, vice versa.

Additionally, the RAMMP features a zipper running side to side along its middle. This allows you to more effectively configure the interior of a vehicle.

SOMA – MATBOCK LLC

Sunday, December 16th, 2012

MATBOCK has a really cool addition to their carbon fiber litter poles. This new kit turns the poles into a ladder.

20121215-154925.jpg

The final kit will feature five V-shaped rungs to create a 7.5 ft ladder. I asked about the V-shape of the rungs and was told that they lay flat on the poles when you use it as a horizontal ladder. Very smart guys!

Transition back to litter is easy as the rungs just slide right on and off the poles with weight being borne by Spectra cord and engineered end caps. Yes, this means there is an up on this ladder so keep that in mind.

This is a final prototype but look for these late 1st quarter 2013.

The new Leatherman Raptor was designed specifically for medical personnel. It is a compact, folding shear.

It integrates a one hand opening strap cutter with an integrated oxygen tank wrench. Flip to around and there’s a carbide tip glass breaker as well as a lanyard attachment.

Once opened the shear’s 420 high carbon steel blades feature a metric scale ruler for measuring ECG strips and the shears themselves feature a unique grind that doesn’t shed material into wounds and allows you to rip cut. Additionally, there is a ring cutter function at the back of the blades.

In addition to a pocket clip which will also fit a single PALS bar. Additionally, there is an ambidextrous injection molded holster that allows for angled carry. The holster allows for open or closed carry of the Raptor.

SOMA – Bio-Oil

Sunday, December 16th, 2012

Originally developed in 1987 for recovering burn survivors, Bio-Oil is a non-greasy oil for dry skin. The ingredient PurCellin Oil reduces the thickness of the solution making it easily absorbed. This means no greasy feeling and I’m told a lot of deployed guys are getting care packages containing Bio-Oil to help deal with chapped hands and dry skin. It’s also good for scar tissue.

20121215-140732.jpg

Its been available overseas for years but has just recently been introduced to the US. Bio-Oil is now available at most major retailers.

Yes, it’s great for the ladies.

SOMA – Black Box Biometrics

Saturday, December 15th, 2012

Developed under a DARPA program, the Blast Gauge sensor system from Black Box Biometrics (B3) collects data about blast exposure.

20121215-132359.jpg

One of the great features of the Blast Gauge is that it gives instant feedback after an event. Simply depress a detent on the face of the device and the Soldier gets a Green, Amber or Red light based on the level of blast overpressure. Additionally, the device can be interrogated and data about the last 10 events downloaded and reviewed by medical personnel to allow them to characterize the exposure and formulate a treatment plan.

The device is small and can be mounted on the rear of the helmet as well as the chest and shoulder allowing for more accurate collection of overpressure waves and their effects on different areas of the body.

I see a lot of advantages with the Blast Gauge. It is compact and lightweight, offering immediate feedback to the Soldier. Additionally, it assists in triage and subsequent treatment options as well as overall research into blast overpressure.
