Warrior West 19 – Waterproof Zippers Added to the Phokus Trauma Kit Line

Tuesday, May 14th, 2019

Phokus Research Group has introduced waterproof zippers and polyurethane construction to their Phokus Trauma Kit line.

The combination of zipper and waterproof material make this the first accessible waterproof kit (IP67) on the market. The new option will be introduced to the low viz deployment kit first, with other models to follow.

Although the cost is more, polyurethane is more durable than vinyl. Kits manufactured from vinyl will still be offered as lower cost option and in instances where high durability isn’t required such as kit components in outer containers.

Phokus Research Group products are available for agency and unit order through ADS.

Pelican BioThermal – Golden Hour One

Tuesday, May 14th, 2019

Pelican BioThermal launched their New Golden Hour One at last week’s SOMSA. It’s the latest generation of award-winning Golden Hour technology — a smaller, lighter reusable container for transporting blood to the battlefield.

The new product is a smaller-scale, nimble, reusable thermal packaging container for transporting whole blood products. With Golden Hour One, military units can more easily transport life-saving blood to far-forward combat areas where they are needed most during the first critical hour after injury — regardless of extreme conditions.

Golden Hour technology was invented by Pelican BioThermal in 2003 at the request of the US Army to address the need to securely, reliably and safely transport blood to battlefields away from fixed medical facilities. These battlefields are often situated in regions with extreme conditions that could result in temperature excursions that damage blood supplies. Golden Hour temperature-controlled containers resolved this issue and received the US Army’s Greatest Invention Award for their innovation.

“Since we developed the Golden Hour technology more than 15 years ago, we have continually expanded the line to meet the ever-evolving needs of the military,” said Kevin Lawler, vice president of worldwide sales at Pelican BioThermal. “The launch of Golden Hour One answers the call for an even more portable container to transport blood supplies from anywhere in the world to any battlefield in the world.”

The ultra-light Golden Hour One holds a single unit of whole blood and maintains temperature for 18 hours under extreme conditions without external energy. And under less challenging conditions, it can keep blood cool for up to 36-plus hours. These temperature controlled containers are easy to use and assemble and consist of safe, reusable non-toxic materials.

Golden Hour One joins Pelican BioThermal’s proven family of Golden Hour products. The original Golden Hour Mobile transports up to four units of red blood cells (RBCs) and maintains temperature control in excess of 72 hours under extreme conditions. Golden Hour Medic stores up to two units of whole blood, keeps blood cool for 24 hours under extreme conditions and performs up to 48-plus hours under optimal conditions.

SOMSA 19 – Tactical Mechanical Tourniquet

Thursday, May 9th, 2019

Last week, the Committee on Tactical Combat Casualty Care (CoTCCC) issued a revised list of approved medical devices for TCCC. This is the first time that new tourniquets have been added to the list in years.

One of these new tourniquets is the Tactical Mechanical Tourniquet available through Combat Medical.

The TMT is now the widest approved TQ. Applied within 30 seconds, the buckle secures the running end of the strap and the windless is secured via a clip. You can both hear and feel when the windless is correctly secured. Additionally, it can be self applied if needed with the strap already running through the buckle. In fact, it will fit limbs between 5-3/4″ and 38″.

The TMT has also been assigned NSN 6515-01-656-6191.
