Today, Crye Precision officially released four new variant camouflage patterns based on the ever popular MultiCam; Arid, Tropical, Alpine and Black. Each is designed for specialized use while the classic MultiCam transitional pattern continues to be great for more universal wear as it tends to blend into most any environment. While Transitional and Black are available for order now, Duro Textiles will have the other new patterns available for order soon.
One new feature you may notice is that the MultiCam family of patterns all feature branding embedded in the print.
MultiCam is the combat-proven solution for concealment when operating in widely varied and mixed terrain. While MultiCam is suited to an extremely wide selection of environments, we have developed three new patterns that are optimized for narrower areas of operation. These new patterns work well with the primary MultiCam pattern to meet the needs of these extreme environments, thus expanding the performance envelope of the MultiCam family to cover nearly every possible environmental condition. The MultiCam patterns can be used alone or in conjunction with each other to meet nearly any operational requirement.
The same user now has more system-level options. For instance, a MultiCam chest rig can be paired with a MultiCam Tropic uniform for a known jungle deployment. Similarly, a MultiCam vest and pack can be paired with a MultiCam Arid uniform for activity within an open sand and rock desert. MultiCam Alpine is best suited for any environment encountering significant snowfall, while MultiCam Black is designed to offer domestic agencies a distinct and authoritative presence suited to law enforcement operations.
The MultiCam patterns were developed to provide maximum effectiveness across diverse operating environments with a minimum logistical burden. The patterns all have distinct roles but are designed to work together as a system to meet the needs of nearly any operating environment, all while helping the wearer do so with the least amount of kit possible.
THE MULTICAM FAMILY OF PATTERNS CONSISTS OF:
MultiCam: The base – the original combat-proven pattern that offers the widest range of environmental effectiveness – ideally suited for apparel & gear that must be employed throughout mixed or varied environments.
MultiCam Arid: A pattern intended for open sand and rock – ideally suited for apparel when working exclusively in bright open desert terrain.
MultiCam Tropic: A pattern intended for deep verdant jungle use – ideally suited for apparel when working exclusively in a dense jungle environment.
MultiCam Alpine: A pattern intended for snow-covered areas – ideally suited for over-garments and gear covers when/where snow cover is present.
MultiCam Black: While not a geographically-based pattern, MultiCam Black gives law enforcement groups a sharp and authoritative presence suited to domestic L.E. operations where projecting a strong and distinct image is a critical concern. MultiCam Black is designed to complement a wide range of existing armor and gear colors (for instance, green or black vests both look well-matched when paired with MultiCam Black uniforms).

What To Do With Billions Of Dollars Worth Of UCP TA-50? – UPDATED

I’ve written several articles about the US Army’s impending change from the ill-named Universal Camouflage Pattern to the newly renamed Operational Camouflage Pattern also known commercially as MultiCam by Crye Precision. I’ve even mentioned a plan to repurpose current stocks of UCP equipment such as MOLLE and IOTV covers to a new, more usable colorway. But how do you change the colors of billions of Dollars worth of equipment? The answer is simple; you dye it. Think of it as a means to cut their losses.
Earlier this year I began to hear reports that the Army had been working with a commercial vendor to develop a process to over dye UCP equipment with a shade of Brown in order to make it more compatible with OCP. Naturally, there are issues afoot here. For example, different materials are going to absorb the dye at different rates, and equipment exhibiting differing levels of wear will also absorb dye differently. In the end, it’s going to look rather interesting. It isn’t going to blend in so much as not clash, like traditional UCP would against OCP. Best case, it may end up somewhat resembling the brown-based UCP-Delta pattern tested in Afghanistan in 2009. Worst case? I shudder to imagine.
Specifically, the Army has issued a Sources Sought Notice. Interested parties have until 20 December, 2013 to respond. The link to the notice is www.fbo.gov.
Subject: Request for Information to Over-dye Nylon Fabrics and Items
Project Manager Soldier Protection and Individual Equipment (PM-SPIE) of the Program Executive Office (PEO) Soldier, Fort Belvoir, VA 22060 is seeking information from potential industry partners to provide a technology solution to modify the camouflage pattern on current equipment. The potential development effort is to over-dye items and/or fabric comprised of nylon 500D and 1000D. Specific items include the Modular Lightweight Load carrying Equipment (MOLLE) and Improved Outer Tactical Vest (IOTV). Items are treated with water repellant, polyurethane, and fire retardant on some equipment. The objective is to modify the Universal Camouflage Pattern (UCP) to more closely match the shade/color of Operation Enduring Freedom Camouflage Pattern (OCP). Of particular interest are portable technologies that can be utilized outside of the manufacturing environment.
Where will it be used? Your guess is as good a mine. Assuredly, it will be issued to the training base so anyone who attends BCT, AIT, Ranger School or any other resident school that issues TA-50 will see this stuff for years to come. Incidentally, TA-50 gets its name from Common Table of Allowances 50-900, Clothing and Individual Equipment which authorizes items for issue based on duty position, unit of assignment or climatic zone. Some of these over duded items may also end up in the reserve components but there has already been some pushback from National Guard commanders who refuse to be looked at as a second class force with second class equipment after being so active over the past 12 years in the war effort. But, over time we will see attrition and replacement of this over dyed UCP. And, I want to mention that the most recent MOLLE contract was only for OCP and the Army has stopped purchasing MOLLE in UCP.
Some have pointed to recent articles published by the press regarding statements by Army spokesmen to suggest that my evidence that the Army is marching ahead with the camouflage change is incorrect. If so, why would the PEO Soldier put out a call to industry just this past week looking for firms that are capable of over dyeing TA-50 if they weren’t still planning to make the camouflage switch?

Saturday, November 23rd, 2013Apparently LA Police Gear is the first to break the embargo until 11/25/13 on images of the new MultiCam Black pattern by posting an order page for the TruSpec Multicam Black Tactical Response Uniform Combat Shirt. Already a few images of sections of the pattern have shown up on Facebook but this is the first substantial leak. When I first saw the pattern over the summer, I was immediately struck at how much it reminded me of the ERDL cammies over dyed with Black RIT dye used by SWAT guys back in the 80s. As you can see, it darkens the pattern up but the base pattern’s browns and greens still show through although slightly muted.
