Post SHOT Show Wrapup – Slumberjack

Friday, January 29th, 2016

We previewed the Pursuit Vest during last year’s Outdoor Retailer Summer Market. It will be hitting the streets this year.

Although it only comes in one size, it has quite a bit of adjustment. The Pursuit is designed for use while hunting or fishing but would make a great utility best thanks to its four chest pockets and 70 oz hydration bladder capable rear pocket. There are also PALS fields for additional gear.

The Wild-Her is Slumberjack’s first pack designed specifically for the ladies.

You may notice the offset waist belt adjustment that keeps the buckle off of the belly button for comfort. This is just one component of their new, contoured hip belt built with the shape of women’s waists in mind. This 33L internal frame pack accommodates trophies as well as weapons and features six external pockets.

Both items are offered in Kryptek Highlander.

Mel Terkla Joins Wolfpack Gear

Tuesday, January 26th, 2016

This is fantastic news for an old friend of mine!

Mel Terkla has signed on with Wolfpack Gear in San Luis Obispo, CA to help design a new line of Tactical and Adventure backpacks. Wolfpackgear.com is one of the leading manufacturers of wildland firefighting gear in the country. Mel had been in semi retirement for the last year and a half after being let go from Kifaru, but decided he wasn’t done designing backpacks, and after much research, reached out to Mike Oberndorfer the owner of Wolfpack Gear. It just so happened that Mike wanted to start a new line of backpacks and was looking for a designer, and after meeting up, there was a mutual agreement that fate seemed to bring them together to make it happen.

Mel Terkla was the one that helped start the Tactical division at Kifaru back in 2002 and headed up design and sales for over 12 years. He is accredited with getting the Kifaru brand known and respected in the industry and will be bringing those credentials to Wolfpack Gear. Look for a mid summer launch of the new line that will be announced on the Wolfpack Gear website and Facebook page. There will also be a forum in the future on the website for questions and answers, updates, photos, and feedback. To those that know Mel personally, you know customer service will be second to none and he can be reached now for any questions or discussion about the new gear at mel@wolfpackgear.com .

SHOT Show – Australian Defence Apparel

Friday, January 22nd, 2016

ADA builds seven different packs for the Australian Defence Forces.  One of the issues with the current frame is that it isn’t adjustable for the full range of sizes of Soldiers.

ADA developed the One-99 frame to accommodate the 1% through 99th% body.  This external frame is adjustable itself and has multiple attachment points for the harness offering an amazing number of sizing options. Additionally, the frame can be adjusted to fit the load for such instances where a dense load, of small volume where the user wants a  more compact frame length.

The Patented One-99 has also been issued NSN 8465-66-163-0153 by the ADF.

SHOT Show – Crye Precision

Tuesday, January 19th, 2016

Every year I am impressed by Crye Precision’s dedication to innovation. This year is no exception.

First thing you’ll notice is they aren’t showing as many items publicly as in the past. Last year, they decided to limit the products they display to those that they will release that year but there’s still plenty to see. They’ve got a new way of doing soft armor as well as packs. There are also overwhites and a pack cover as well as new riggers belts.

LVS

LVS is an entirely new way of creating soft armor. The system offers NIJ IIIA protection and Crye Precision has created a patented process called Insert As Vest (IAV) that does away with external carriers for soft armor.

The panels are 3D formed to mimic the lines of the human torso which not only enhances concealability but also eliminates crumpling of ballistic material at the bottom of a carrier.

The basic carrier has two pouches built-in along the front of either side of the cummerbund for magazines, radios or other items but the panels can quickly be swapped to different covers which are really more sleeves than a traditional carrier. Available in Grey in S, M, M-L, L, L-L, XL, XL-L, 2XL.

Packs

Crye Precision is offering two new packs, the EXP 1500 and EXP 2100. These are low profile designs that don’t scream tactical and have an interesting feature whereby the wearer can extend the pack’s capacity by up to 500 cu in for the 1500 and 900 during in for the 2100, just by opening a couple of zippers. This feature also means the pack will accapt item up to 27″ long for the 1500 and 29″ long for the 2100.

The EXP 2100 also offers removable sternum and waist straps as well as comms/antenna/h2o ports at the top of the pack. Offered in MultiCam, Black, Grey and Ranger Green.

Features:
-Full perimeter (lay-flat) opening allows easy access to contents and offers all the benefits of both a top-opening and side-opening bag.
-Fleece lined pocket fits medium to small sized tablets (H: 11” W: 8”)
-Top access laptop storage (H: 12.25” W: 19.75”)
-EXP PACK MOLLE INSERT (sold separately) for attaching pouches and gear
-Molded back pad with integrated air channels
-Internal pAlS webbing on inside walls
-Internal mesh divider separates front compartment and main compartment
-Convenient briefcase style side handle 11. removable sternum strap
-Removable 3D formed frame sheet

Alpine Pack Covers

Offered in two sizes (med 34l and large 73l) these lightweight MultiCam Alpine pack covers fold into an integral stuff sack and fit many different packs thanks to an internal drawstring.

Compact Alpine Overwhites

The Compact Alpine Overwhites are in the MultiCam Alpine pattern and consists of a knee-length parka with thumb loops and pass thoughs to pockets of garmemts worn underneath such as combat shirts as well as a set of gaiters which come just above the knee. The gaiters offer greater mobility than traditional overpants.

Coveralls

The Fieldsuit and Combatsuit are being joined by the Flightsuit which is optimized for wear by aircrews. Issue flightsuits give a wedgie when bending but Crye Precision’s design eliminates this issue through their unique zipper design. It is available in FR and non-FR versions in even chest sizes 32-52 in Short, Regular, Long and X-Long lengths. MultiCam, Ranger Green and Black.

LRB

Available in two flavors, Loop Buckle and Quick Disconnect, the LRB is a low profile riggers belt. It can be worn alone, with the CP MRB as the inner belt, or atop the inner belt that comes with the MRB is you need to add life support capability to your war belt. It features a load bearing front anchor loop as well as a removable, LRB Floating Loop so you can move an anchor point to where you need it on the belt. It is lined with Velcro hook for integration with an inner belt and performance exceeds NFPA 1983. Offered in Black, Coyote, Ranger Green and MultiCam. Sizes Small-XLarge.

But That’s Not All

As in past years, vetted customers will also get to see several products in the back room, which are either under development or that have restricted distribution. For instance, last year, I got a glimpse of the new LVS body armor system. The year before that it was the AVS 1000 pack. Now, both are publicly available. You should expect to see all of the items in the booth available on Crye’s site over the next months.

SOG Announces New Line of Packs

Saturday, January 16th, 2016

Lynnwood, WA. – SOG® Specialty Knives and Tools has announced the release of their new line of SOG Packs. A family of six bags ranging in size from a daily sling pack to a full-sized duffel, the SOG Packs break the mold on conventional tactical bags; bringing a line that serve every user ready for outdoor adventures or daily carry.

Not only do the new SOG packs offer typical functions like hydration sleeves, MOLLE attachment points, and durable fabrics, but also premium features such as Hypalon MOLLE fields, Quad-Zip full access compartments, integrated long item carriers, and suspension systems. Contemporary use of tactical packs calls for the need of added comfort, versatility, and durability – SOG packs deliver on all these benefits and more, all while maintaining a sleek unassuming look.

The versatility of the packs offers something for everyone. For longer expeditions, the adaptable Seraphim 35L or Prophet 33L can house all your gear without sacrificing mobility and comfort. For outings shorter than that, the Scout 24L can handle anything for an overnight or day trip while the Ranger 12L makes a great companion for quick escapes.

Modern urban warriors will find that the TOC 20L or EVAC 18L sling can easily organize their daily carry. Whether heading out for a multi-day excursion or a quick morning errand, there is a SOG pack for your needs.

SERAPHIM 35L

The SOG Seraphim is designed to be the pack that does it all by carrying everything in its 35L main compartment. Equipped with shock cord tie downs, any additional equipment can be cinched to the outside of the bag, attached to the Hypalon MOLLE field, or strapped inside the fold-down panel. In addition, the unique integrated long item carry caters to the adventurer who’s travels require an axe, fishing rod, bow, or rifle. The combination of these external features, along with the pack’s internal organizing components, make it one of the best and versatile 35L packs on the market.

PROPHET 33L

For a pack, the SOG Prophet is one that is adaptable to any purpose. This 33L pack goes from backpack to duffle bag in a snap by stowing the quick-release shoulder straps and hip belt out of the way. Each side of the pack houses lash points for long item carry, compression flaps for keeping the weight of the pack closer to the carrier, and Hypalon MOLLE fields for more external attachment points for extra gear. Accessing the inside main compartment via the Quad-Zip means the once arduous process of finding gear from the bottom of the pack, now doesn’t require unpacking everything on top of it. This pack’s ease of use and functionality make it one of the most versatile packs available.

SCOUT 24L

The SOG Scout brings way more to the table than any other 24L pack in the game. The panel loading main compartment comes fully equipped with multiple interior pockets, a padded laptop sleeve, hydration carry and MOLLE loop field. Accessing the main compartment through the Quad-Zip allows for you to find your gear from the bottom of the pack without unpacking everything on top of it. Any extra gear can be cinched to the pack’s side compression straps, attached to the Hypalon MOLLE field, or held on by the Scout’s unique wire long item carry. The top molded panel allows quick access to smaller items, such as sunglasses or phones. Due to the suspension, a fully loaded pack can be carried comfortably whether going for two or twenty miles.

TOC 20L

The SOG TOC is the ultimate 20L daypack for the urban warrior or forest adventurer. Its light overall weight makes it easy to carry; and the quick- adjust shoulder straps, padded hip belt and rigid suspension keep it comfortable all day long. As the “Tactical Operating Center,” this pack houses plenty of options for storage and organization: the main compartment has multiple interior zippered pockets and small sleeves, the molded top contains a small organizing system for quick access items, two side access pockets live on the front of the pack, and a pass-through side access laptop compartment keeps your notebook safe. Whether you are hopping on the subway or jumping over creeks, the TOC makes a great companion for the modern user all day.

RANGER 12L

The SOG Ranger is no stranger to a trip scouting new trails or a day hike in the local mountains. It’s fast and light, and the quick-adjust shoulder straps, hip belt, and sheet suspension keep it comfortable all day. This pack houses plenty of options for storage and organization: the main compartment has an interior zippered pocket and a padded tablet sleeve, the molded top contains a small organizing system for quick access items, the front organizer pocket with more interior sleeves, and an hydration carry to keep you hydrated. Any extra gear can be cinched to the pack’s side compression straps or attached to the Hypalon MOLLE field. For quick excursions, this 12L pack carries everything you need.

EVAC SLING 18L

For short distance carry, mobility, and quick on-the-run access to all your gear, the SOG EVAC 18L sling pack is the go-to pack. Side pockets allows for easy entry to your laptop, with the main and secondary compartment providing access to all your gear without taking the pack off. Inside the main compartment lives an organization panel for smaller items that may otherwise get lost in the bottom of the pack. The molded top pocket and front organizer pockets gives you even more storage flexibility. This pack’s design allows for rapid deployment and maneuverability of your gear without slowing you down.

Available March 1st through www.sogknives.com, the full line of packs can first be seen at the SOG booth (#425) during SHOT Show in Las Vegas, Jan. 19-22.
