USMC Corpsman Assault System Presolicitation

Wednesday, December 5th, 2012

The Marine Corps strikes again. This time it’s the USMC Corpsman Assault System which relies on a government owned design. So far the Marines have done this with several items including the IMTV and the USMC Pack. It means that commercial gear companies don’t have a shot at getting their designs into the hands of Marines and the issue equipment is designed by committee.

About a year ago, MARCORSYSCOM issued an RFI for production of a Corpsman Assault System consisting of:

Corpsman Assault System
Medical Assault Pack, CAS
Shoulder Harness Assembly, CAS
Shoulder Harness Pocket Assembly, CAS
Handle Assembly, CAS
Medical Sustainment Bag, CAS
Medical Thigh Rig, CAS
Belt, Medical Thigh Rig, CAS
Strap, Upright, Medical Thigh Rig, CAS
Strap, Medical Thigh Rig, CAS
Modular Medical Pouch, CAS
Narc Pouch, CAS
Medium Pouch, CAS
Large Pouch, CAS
Small Reversible Pouch, CAS
Medium Reversible Pouch, CAS
Elastic Panel, CAS
Double Pocket Panel, CAS
Stacked Pocket Panel, CAS
Triple Pocket Panel, CAS

I’m surprised it took a year for this to actually hit the pre-solicitation stage but the Marine Corps has done a very good job of keeping an eye on the programmatics side; synching dollars and programs. They know where their money is and when to spend it.

The Marines know what they want and are giving interested parties a heads up that they plan on buying up to 10,000 of these systems. Specifically, they want offerors to be able to produce at least 8,585 Corpsman Assault Systems within ten (10) months of contract award.

Patterns are available in the documentation for those interested in bidding. Feel free to read the whole thing at www.fbo.gov.

Also, we engraved Dana’s signature on a set of Wiss scissors that we’re throwing in for the lucky winner. One of a kind, signed set of tools that we’ve been using for decades… :

Forget the Bug Out Bag – Now They’re Talking INCH

Friday, November 23rd, 2012

INCH as in I’m Never Coming Home. So if a Bug Out Bag is meant for 72 hours on your own, what is the INCH bag intended for? What should be in it?

Somebody has already launched a website dedicated to the concept – inchbag.com. But, it’s typical Doomsday Prepper caliber with lots of surplus store stuff.

If you had to actually live out of a pack, what would you carry? I’d start it out with these 10 essentials.

1. Knife
2. Fire making materials
3. Water purification and bottle
4. Food / food acquisition (snares, firearm, etc)
5. Navigation (map/compass/GPS)
6. First Aid items
7. Shelter
8. Environmental protection (clothing, sunglasses, etc)
9. Cord
10. Signal Devices

and that 11th, a positive attitude.

But, what do you guys think?

ADS Inc Hit 6000 Likes on Facebook – Celebrate and Win a Camelbak in US4CES Camo

Tuesday, November 20th, 2012

ADS Inc has just surpassed 6000 Likes on Facebook. To celebrate, we asked ADS to let us giveaway a Camelbak Urban Assault Pack in US4CES OCIE pattern. You can be one of the first to own a pack in this sought after pattern.

Since we’re celebrating Facebook ‘Likes’ we’re going to run the contest on Facebook. To win, you’ll need to start by giving both ADS Inc and SSD a ‘Like’. Then, you’ll need to comment on Facebook.com/adsinc explaining that SSD sent you and which US4CES pattern you like and why. For example, “SSD sent me here, I like US4CES OCIE Pattern because I like how it blends with all of the other patterns (btw, if we see that statement cut and pasted word for word, you won’t win). The comment should focus on which US4CES pattern is your favorite and why.

On Sunday 25 November at 2359Z we’ll randomly select a winner from the entries on the ADS Inc Facebook wall. The winning entry must meet all of the requirements. The winner will be contacted via private message and has 24 hours to follow up with shipping address. Failure to follow up within 24 hours will result in forfeiture of prize. Must be 18 to enter. Void where prohibited.
