NFM Group Awarded Pioneering R&D Contract with CANSOFCOM for Advanced Ballistic Plates

Wednesday, November 8th, 2023

NFM Group is proud to announce its partnership with the Canadian Special Operations Forces Command (CANSOFCOM) and Defence Research and Development Canada (DRDC) for an R&D program focused on the design and development of innovative hard ballistic plates.

Ski, Norway, November 8th 2023: The contract, awarded in September 2023, initiates a two-year development phase, with the first delivery anticipated for 2025. In a forward-thinking move, this contract also includes a provision for a seamless transition to immediate pre-approved procurement upon successful completion of the development phase. This eliminates potential gaps in delivery timelines and ensures that CANSOFCOM members are equipped with the latest protective gear without delay.

“We’re incredibly honored to collaborate with CANSOFCOM and DRDC in redefining the future of hard ballistic plates. This contract is a testament to NFM Group’s commitment to innovation and our relentless pursuit of safeguarding those on the frontlines”, says Cyril Veillat, Director Body Armor Systems, at NFM’s Product Integration Unit.

Reinventing Hard Ballistic Plates for Modern Warfare

NFM Group aligns with CANSOFCOM’s core belief that its most valuable resource is its personnel. As the diversity within the Canadian Armed Forces continues to grow, there is an increasing need for ballistic plates designed to accommodate a wide range of body types.

“Our upcoming hard ballistic plates will leverage cutting-edge materials and feature a revolutionary multi-curve design to fit various body shape, especially female ones. This enhances both fit and protection, safeguarding vital organs and points more effectively. Furthermore, the new plates will be lighter than their predecessors, fostering increased comfort, mobility, and functionality across varying roles, missions, and threat levels”, says Veillat.

The design process will be data-driven, incorporating anthropometric data from diverse body types benefitting from DRDC’s extensive expertise in personal protection and laboratory testing infrastructure. Rigorous testing before and after acquisition will validate that the new plates meet or exceed all ballistic limit requirements.

NFM’s Advanced Capabilities in Ballistic Protection

NFM Group’s vision is to protect individuals against both man-made and natural threats, regardless of the environment. Our Ballistic Department has specialized in end-to-end design and development of a wide array of ballistic protections since 2006, ranging from soft panels to hard plates and trauma protections.

“Our in-house ballistic test laboratory allows for immediate performance verification, accelerating the R&D process in a controlled environment. Utilizing unique, state-or-the-art technology such as FREC II, we’ve optimized our offerings to provide lightweight protection that supports mobility and enhances the survivability of frontline soldiers”, says Veillat.

This contract marks a significant expansion of NFM Group’s footprint within North America’s Special Operations Forces community and serves as a pivotal moment in our growth strategy.

By fusing our innovative technologies and deep industry experience with CANSOFCOM and DRDC’s insights, we aim to set new standards in ballistic protection and fortify our commitment to the safety and effectiveness of military and law enforcement personnel.

Corvid Technologies Teams with Jankel Tactical Systems to Deliver Results on US DoD SBIR Seating Program

Tuesday, November 7th, 2023

Corvid Technologies, a US-based provider of end-to-end engineering solutions, has teamed with Jankel Tactical Systems, a world-leader in the design and manufacture of high-specification defense, security, and NGO protection systems, to deliver results on a US Department of Defense (DoD) Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) program. The SBIR program aims to develop new vehicle seating system technologies that provide protection from a variety of high-energy threats with dynamics that are multi-directional. The Corvid/Jankel solution combines proven Jankel seating technologies with new innovations produced using the computational analysis and design expertise of Corvid and its Velodyne high-fidelity computational physics solver.

The DoD customer has awarded Jankel and Corvid Phase I and Phase II SBIR funding to develop their protective seating system solution. In the successful execution of these contracts, the Jankel/Corvid team has leveraged the respective skills of both companies to deliver innovation, fresh thinking, and a science-led approach. While vehicle seating systems that protect against underbody blast threats are a matured technology and a core existing product group for Jankel, the threat environment for an armored vehicle consists of more than just underbody blast, and seating technologies must evolve to provide protection against a greater variety of threats, including those which come from multiple directions. This joint project will deliver a technology demonstrator seating system that protects against diverse and multi-directional threats. Due to the sensitivities involved, the team is unable to reveal any further technical details.

David Robinson, President and CEO at Corvid Technologies said: “We selected Jankel Tactical Systems as a partner given their established position in the Defense vehicle seating market. Jankel’s quick-response capabilities in combination with Corvid’s particular engineering analysis skillset allows our team to deliver prototype engineering solutions that are both innovative and compliant – exactly what a project like this requires. We are confident that the team we have formed here will be able to solve the unique challenges set by our customer.”

John Kyler, President at Jankel Tactical Systems said: “We’re really pleased to have teamed with Corvid Technologies on this SBIR project. Protected vehicle seating system technology is something that we’ve been successfully developing for many years and our seating systems are in service across multiple defense platforms, globally. Taking our existing protection systems and evolving them to meet emerging threats is an exciting proposition and adding our skill set to that of Corvid has created a project team that combines our respective strengths in exactly the right way. I’m looking forward to seeing the results!”

L3Harris and NIOA Announce Guided Weapons Collaboration in Australia

Monday, November 6th, 2023

SYDNEY, Nov. 7, 2023 – Aerojet Rocketdyne, an L3Harris Technologies [NYSE:LHX] company, and Australian-owned defence prime NIOA have announced a strategic agreement to explore the manufacturing of critical guided weapons components in Australia.

The agreement anticipates the future assembly and manufacture of rocket motors, boosters and warheads for munitions within the Aerojet Rocketdyne portfolio. This portfolio covers the wide range of weapons within Australia’s sovereign Guided Weapons and Explosive Ordnance (GWEO) Enterprise.

“As part of a world-leading technology company, Aerojet Rocketdyne is pleased to embark on this project to bring rocket motor and warhead manufacturing to Australia,” said Ross Niebergall, President, Aerojet Rocketdyne. “Our company is uniquely positioned to provide the intellectual property for a wide range of propulsion systems used by the Commonwealth. Growing our capability in Australia will provide opportunities for Australian companies to contribute to the global supply chain for guided weapons.”

Speaking on the eve of the INDO PACIFIC 2023 international defence exhibition in Sydney, NIOA Group CEO Robert Nioa said, “As a 100% Australian-owned company, NIOA is excited to be entering this strategic agreement with Aerojet Rocketdyne to address critical munitions priorities for Australia.

“Ultimately we aim to create a multi-user rocket motor facility that will not only support our portfolio of offerings but will also have capacity and flexibility to support future strategic partners to meet the guided weapon demands as identified by the Australian Defence Force as well as adjacent industry sectors like space.

“This logical grouping of the main elements of the rocket motor, warhead and booster supply chains can deliver economies of scale that will maintain the production volumes needed to sustain critical skillsets. Forward deployed logistics and co-production initiatives in the Indo-Pacific region with Australia’s close allies are central to our model. This facility will also boost regional employment and will provide substantial opportunities for local companies to get involved in the supply chain.”

The Australian Government’s Defence Strategic Review released earlier this year emphasized the rapid establishment of a domestic GWEO manufacturing capability. The government responded by committing $2.5 billion to accelerate a sovereign industry to improve the Australian Defence Force’s self-reliance and the nation’s export capacity.
