Rheinmetall Strikes the Arc on Australian Boxer Combat Reconnaissance Vehicles

Tuesday, March 21st, 2023

Queensland Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk today visited Rheinmetall as the company striked the arc on the first weld of materials for the first Australian Boxer Combat Reconnaissance Vehicle entering production at Rheinmetall’s Military Vehicle Centre of Excellence (MILVEHCOE) in Ipswich, Queensland. This vehicle will be the first to enter the production line together with initial vehicles from Germany currently being assembled at the site.

Joined by Deputy Premier Dr Steven Miles, Australian Industry Partners including Bisalloy, Marand, Intellidesign and Rheinmetall’s 600 strong Queensland workforce, the start of production realises Rheinmetall’s goal to support Australia’s Defence Force and its allies with an industrial base in the region.

“This is a very proud day for Queensland’s defence manufacturing capabilities, as our association with Rheinmetall on the $5.2 billion LAND 400 Phase 2 project delivers locally built Boxer CRVs.

“Through the delivery of LAND 400 Phase 2 and its other projects, our partnership has already created 600 jobs at the Military Vehicle Centre of Excellence, which will be contributing more than $1 billion to the Queensland’s economy in its first 10 years of operation.

“The facility is now the most advanced military vehicle manufacturing facility in Australia.

“Our partnership’s continuing success provides long-term certainty to the current workforce, and greater opportunities through the entire supply chain which impacts many SMEs right across Queensland”, said Premier Palaszczuk

Rheinmetall has commenced production of the second batch of Boxer Combat Reconnaissance Vehicles for the Australian Defence Force.

In recognising the milestone, Nathan Poyner, Managing Director of Rheinmetall Defence Australia commented “Rheinmetall has delivered a first batch of 25 Boxer CRVs to Australia. These initial Boxers were built in Germany, and finalised at MILVEHCOE, joining the more than 2900 HX Trucks that were finalised and are today sustained from the facility.

“This striking of the arc event represents the first of 186 Boxer CRVs that will be built at MILVEHCOE, providing jobs, training and new opportunities for Australians working at Rheinmetall and in the more than 200 Australian Industry Partners across the nation.

“Rheinmetall has taken a long-term partnership approach to working in Australia, and we’re proud to be the largest provider of Military vehicles to the Australian Defence Force. We have an operational facility, the staff in place, our partnerships in place and as part of the capability to build a complete modern armoured vehicle, we have established real sovereign capabilities including armour production and electronics manufacturing for the Australian Defence Force; all of which happens right here in Queensland” said Mr Poyner.

The Boxer Combat Reconnaissance Vehicle is an advanced, armoured 8×8 vehicle in service with nations including Australia, the United Kingdom and Germany. The Boxer offers enhanced safety, security and protection of Australian troops with high levels of protection, firepower and mobility for sustained operations across peacekeeping and close combat activities.

20 Years of Protection from Westec Insulation System

Tuesday, March 21st, 2023

SUN PRAIRIE, WI – For two decades the patented Westec® Insulation System has been protecting training structures — both inside and out. Introduced in 2003, the burn room insulation system is designed to provide the best overall performance possible for burn room conditions in fire training structures.

“Strong stainless steel wall panels line our burn rooms are tough enough to withstand the most strenuous training exercises,” says Aaron Adams, president of Fire Facilities, Inc. “Behind the stainless steel wall panel, a Westec® Insulation Blanket protects the tower from extreme temperature during training. Over the years we have seen how the innovative Westec Insulation System provides the highest level of protection for burn room conditions with minimal maintenance costs.”

Hundreds of Fire Facilities structures have been manufactured with the Westec system and put into use by firefighters across the country during the past 20 years. Some fire training buildings, like those in Panama City, Florida; Wellsville, New York; and Hereford, Arizona were amongst the first to get Westec systems two decades ago. Others, like those in Bentonville, Arkansas and Cushing, Oklahoma, are getting their new structures with Westec systems this year.

Components of the Westec Insulation System

There are six basic components of the Westec Insulation System. Each is designed to handle important aspects of performance during a live fire burn:

• Framing System – Insulated steel channels are designed to resist all imposed loads while allowing the system to flex under thermal expansion.

• Westec Insulation Blanket – A 2-inch thick blanket that is stable at temperatures up to 2300 degrees Fahrenheit. The blanket is unaffected by flame, heat, cold or chemicals.

• Stainless Steel Panels – Type 304 stainless steel is formed into rigid panels and provides unparalleled protection against impact and water pressure damage. The formed panels allow for thermal expansion across the width of the panels which are installed to expand freely along their lengths.

• Thermal Break – There are no screw penetrations between the framing system and the stainless steel panels, providing a complete thermal break. This barrier prevents the direct transfer of heat through the framing system to the building structure.

• Flexing and Sliding Connections – The connecting elements from the framing system to the stainless steel panels are made from Type 304 stainless steel and are individually designed to allow the walls and ceiling to expand freely across the length and width of the room.

• Corner Guards – All outside corners, doors and window openings are continuously protected with heavy Type 304 stainless steel corner guard angles.

“Under intense heat, the steel channels flex, allowing the panels to expand freely,” says Adams. “This allows the system to maintain its integrity. In the long run the Westec system helps protect both the training structure and the burn room.”

Tested for Long-Term Endurance

Designed to provide high performance for all burn room conditions, the Westec Insulation System has been tested for many situations. The impressive system is resistant to impact, rust and corrosion, plus direct flame impingement. Thermal performance and high temperatures do not affect the system. The stainless steel panels resist high pressure of hose stream along with freeze cycles.

Finally, Westec incorporates a unique system of structural supports, stainless steel panels, and flexible elements that allow the configuration to move with the heat rather than resist it.

“For 20 years we’ve successfully used the Westec system in our Fire Facilities training structures,” says Adams. “With a 15-year non-prorated warranty for temperatures up to 1850 degrees Fahrenheit, and minimal ongoing maintenance costs, there is no better live fire burn room liner system on the market.”

Blackhawk’s Zach Rodman Takes Second at New Mexico Tactical Games

Monday, March 20th, 2023

OVERLAND PARK, Kan. – March 17, 2023 – Blackhawk®, a leader in law enforcement and military equipment for over 20 years, congratulates tactical athlete Zach Rodman for his second-place finish at the Tactical Games 2023 New Mexico Regional event. Rodman, competing in the Men’s Elite Division, secured the podium finish despite inclement weather that hindered competitors at the NRA Whittington Center in Raton, New Mexico.

Rodman, a 15-year veteran of the Kokomo, Indiana, police force and SWAT team, ran Blackhawk’s T-Series® L3D holster and Foundation Series Tac Nylon gear throughout the event, including plate carrier, belt and pouches.

“New Mexico was a blast, and a really challenging environment,” said Rodman. “Having gear that’s minimalist in design was a real advantage, especially during the 2-mile run that included a 100- to 500-yard rifle stage. It is great to have light, low-profile gear that doesn’t hinder complicated movements, so I can focus on the competition.”

Blackhawk’s T-Series holsters with leg straps are optimally designed to maintain proper holster position and security as competitors navigate unconventional obstacles throughout the Tactical Games. Foundation Series Tac Nylon gear gives competitors some of the lightest weight gear in its class without sacrificing durability or modularity, which is critical to maintaining speed and endurance while wearing plate carriers.

Rodman’s next competition will be April 15-16 at the Tactical Games South Carolina Team event at The SawMill Training Complex in Laurens, South Carolina. Rodman will once again be competing with teammate Jared Halbert, with whom he placed second during The Tactical Games Panthera West Virginia Team competition.
