Galvion Introduces New Nerv Centr SoloPack II Battery at AUSA

Thursday, October 6th, 2022

Galvion, a world leader in the design and manufacture of integrated, soldier-worn power and data management solutions, with operationally proven pedigree in NATO countries, has expanded its Nerv Centr® power provision capability with the introduction of its new SoloPackTM II Lithium ion rechargeable battery. The battery, along with Galvion’s full suite of Nerv Centr® power and data provision and management solutions, and next generation Batlskin® head systems, will be on display at AUSA 2022, booth #1732.

Operations today depend on more charged equipment than ever before, and the complexity of sustaining soldiers on the battlefield expands and shifts with every new technology. Radios, NVGs, GPS, smart phones, laptops, drones, and other surveillance equipment all demand significant power, and the ability to manage that power effectively is mission-critical. Galvion’s new SoloPack II builds on the widely adopted and field-proven functionality of the original SoloPack battery, while offering a number of additional features to further support the modern soldier.

Small, lightweight and energy-dense, the next-generation SoloPack II offers 140Wh of energy, (40% more power storage capacity than SoloPack), while maintaining the familiar, soldier-centric form factor users expect from the Nerv Centr suite of products. SoloPack II fits into a magazine pouch for ease of storage and weighs only 1.65lbs (750 grams). A flexible flying lead connects in any orientation, and the next-generation NettWarrior connector allows faster charging and additional current flow, while remaining backwards compatible with standard US NettWarrior and NATO STANAG 4695 for ease of integration and improved logistic sustainability on the battlefield. The SoloPack II has state-of-charge display for real-time remaining capacity at the press of a button, convenient bottom contact charging and can be recharged while in-flight and connected to Galvion’s Squad Power ManagerTM (SPM) which is certified safe-to-fly.

Kristen Lomastro, President of Active Systems, said: “The SoloPack II is a prime example Galvion’s unyielding commitment to enhancing the operational effectiveness of those who are out in the field, protecting us. We listened to our end-users – they wanted more power, but without the additional bulk and weight – and we delivered a solution that offers longer mission capability, while reducing logistics and minimizing weight burden.” She added: “The less soldiers have to think about while out there, the safer the mission, and that is what drives everything that we do here.”

The higher capacity SoloPack II is designed to support operational power needs for missions of up to 24 hours, while the original 98Wh SoloPack battery supports short-duration missions of up to 12 hours. With expected availability in early 2023, Galvion’s 140Wh SoloPack II rechargeable battery offers users an additional scalable power solution to suit any mission needs.

Persistent Systems to Unveil Next-Generation ISR at AUSA

Solution offers seamless, bidirectional, air-ground video connection without cumbersome receivers

Persistent Systems, LLC (“Persistent”), a leader in mobile ad hoc networking (MANET) technology, will demonstrate for the first time its Cloud Relay™-powered Next-Generation ISR concept at the Association of the United States Army’s (AUSA) 2022 Annual Meeting and Exposition, held October 10-12, in Washington, D.C.

Leveraging Persistent’s Cloud Relay™ solution, which extends the company’s powerful Wave Relay® mobile ad hoc network to beyond line of sight (4G/LTE, SATCOM, or standard Internet), Next-Generation ISR offers warfighters a seamless, persistent, bidirectional air-ground video connectivity that greatly speeds up the tempo of operations.

“Currently, troops on the ground are passive recipients of airborne video,” says Christopher Knapp, Director of Business Development at Persistent Systems. “They rely on cumbersome receiver hardware to get video, and even then, the operator with the gear has to be out in the open to watch the feed. All this slows downs operations.”

But with Next-Generation ISR, Persistent has reimagined air-ground video transmission for the networked battlefield.

Now video can be instantly accessible to warfighters, whether they are operating near an aircraft—or at an operations center half-way around the world. Next-Generation ISR also reduces the cognitive load on the soldier and makes mission-critical information available to the entire team.

“When we click on a video on our smartphones, it immediately starts playing. We don’t think about whether we are on Wi-Fi or 5G. With Next-Generation ISR, soldiers can now realize this same convenience on the battlefield,” said Knapp.

By utilizing the Wave Relay® and Cloud Relay™ networks for video transmission, Next-Generation ISR eliminates the need for special receiver equipment. Now a soldier’s MPU5 networking radio is enough. This change both reduces weight and increases capability. Indeed, dismounted users can also talk directly with the sensor operator and control the camera on the aircraft.

“In building this capability, we’ve collaborated with aircraft camera manufacturers to ensure that the dismounted warfighter can control their cameras,” Knapp said. “We’ve also collaborated with the TAK Product Center to ensure that the feeds and camera control information is auto-discovered in TAK. This is really an industry-wide initiative.”

Persistent Systems will be demonstrating its Next-Generation ISR capability during the upcoming AUSA Annual Meeting and Exposition, at the company’s exhibitor booth (#4552), at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center, in Washington, D.C. Visitors will get to see how a user of Persistent’s Wave Relay®-powered MANET with Cloud Relay™ can receive video and control cameras from anywhere in the world.

Two Australian innovators have been named winners of the prestigious Land Forces 2022 Innovation Awards, worth some $30,000. Their success was announced this afternoon at Land Forces 2022, at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre.

In a first for the Land Forces Innovation Awards, both the National and the SME Innovation Awards were won by the same company. Pentarch Pty Limited has developed a system called Damocles which uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) and robotics to remove the human risks associated with inspecting and defuzing live High Explosive and Illuminating artillery rounds. The panel of eight judges, led by former Deputy Chief Defence Scientist Dr Bill Schofield AM, agreed that Pentarch’s entry was a standout winner.

The Young Innovator Award was presented to Mr James Tsarouhas of Anywise, a young engineer from Victoria, for his work on designing and integrating an array of sensors for military bridges, making them more reliable and safer for the engineers erecting them.

The Awards, including the two cheques for $15,000, were presented at LAND FORCES 2022, at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre (BCEC). They are sponsored this year by Synergy Group, a team of thinkers, solvers and doers focussed on innovation and professional services.

The winners are:

• Land Forces 2022 National Innovation Award: Pentarch Pty Limited (VIC)

The Innovation Awards were created by AMDA Foundation Limited and presented for the first time at the 2013 AVALON Australian International Airshow and Aerospace & Defence Exposition. Since then, some $455,000-worth of SME and Young Innovator Awards have been presented. Today that total climbed to $485,000.

“Our Innovation Awards are designed to recognise and reward the innovativeness and achievements of Australian companies and individuals. They’re still the only Awards of their kind and have become increasingly prestigious,” said LAND FORCES 2022 CEO Mr Justin Giddings.

“The quality of the entries received this year is a reflection of both the excellence and ambition of Australian companies serving the country’s defence market,” Mr Giddings added. “They also reflect the increasing attention paid by the industry to export opportunities: a number of the entries are already very active in overseas markets.”

All of the Land Forces 2022 Innovation Award winners were presented with engraved glass trophies, designed and made by Wathaurong Glass Arts, an indigenously owned and managed cooperative in Geelong.

In addition, the winners of the SME Innovation Award and Young Innovator Award were presented with a cheque for $15,000 each. “These monetary Awards are designed as rewards for their efforts and as a financial contribution to further innovation and the development of professional skills,” said Mr Giddings.
