Battle System LLC’s Marker Panel, Individual, LW Mk1 is now available in MultiCam Alpine for winter and mountain use. I am a huge fan of the MPILW and I think it should be standard issue for everyone. It’s lightweight, durable and effective, transforming from a compact 2.5″ x 2.5″ x .75″ to a full 17″ x 17″ reversible to orange for signaling.

Cody Lundin Fired from ‘Dual Survival’

Tuesday, February 18th, 2014

Yesterday, Cody Lundin, star of Discovery Channel’s hit show ‘Dual Survival‘ and renown trainer in Aboriginal Living Skill posted this to his Facebook Page.

Cody

Dual Survival Update

Dear Campers,
Unfortunately, I have been fired by Discovery Channel for differences over safety and health concerns on the show and will no longer be a part of Dual Survival.

Although I’ll miss elements of the show, what I’ll miss the most are my fans and the opportunity to teach – on a global level – life saving skills, indigenous culture, and values of integrity and respect toward our natural world.

I have received numerous letters from viewers. Many are from kids, or their parents or grandparents, describing in detail how the show has changed their lives. It has brought families together, inspired kids to go outdoors, and motivated moms and dads around the world to take that family camping trip, many for the first time. If I can use a TV show to encourage people to turn off TV and turn on nature, I have done my job.

Thank you all very much for your support over the years. Be safe and prepared, and maybe I’ll train with you in the woods some day!

Stay classy,
Cody Lundin

SHOT Show – CRKT – PARA-SAW Survival Bracelet

Wednesday, January 29th, 2014

You see survival bracelets made from 550 cord everywhere these days so it takes something a little different to catch my eye. The new PARA-SAW Survival Bracelet from CRKT did just that. In addition to a tungsten carbide coated stainless steel wire saw concealed in a plastic sleeve that is woven into the bracelet’s 550 cord, CRKT has introduced 4 Stokes Paracord Bracelet Accessories.

The ParaHatchet from Ultimate Survival Technologies features a 5mm stainless steel handle/blade and is wrapped in 8.2′ of either Orange or Glow In The Dark paracord. The blade integrates 3 hex wrenches and a rope cutter. It’s affordably priced and is the kind of insurance I’d throw in the trunk with a survival kit.

SOLKOA Survival Systems – New Brand Name Clears Up Market Confusion

Tuesday, January 7th, 2014

SOLKOA, Inc. recognized their civilian brand, Fastfire, did not effectively represent their many non-fire related survival products so they have initiated SOLKOA Survival Systems for their consumer survival products line. This includes the SUMA Survival Kit I use.

With more than 200 years of combined instructor experience among its professional staff, SOLKOA, Inc has been quietly producing a wide variety of highly-specialized emergency survival capabilities along with its expert instruction for the US military and other high-risk organizations since 2005.

SOLKOA’s specialized military survival gear usually contains sensitive items that will never be available to the civilian market, but SOLKOA’s Fastfire brand created some market confusion making it difficult for SOLKOA to clearly promote their expanding civilian product line.

The SHOT show directory lists their overall corporate name SOLKOA, Inc. and they will be in booth #32513 in the law enforcement and military section; you should drop by and visit with them, they are the real deal and I rely on their products.

So from now on the civilian products line will be SOLKOA Survival Systems.

SUMA Survival Kit from Solkoa – Available Now at Austere Provisions Co

Monday, December 9th, 2013

The FastFire SUMA Pro Survival Kit is a professional grade survival kit by Solkoa has traditionally only been available to government clients. I’ve seen the kit in their booth at SHOT Show and asked every year if it would be commercially available. Finally, they’ve added it to their commercial line, FastFire. It comes packed in a SUMA Container along with an Emergency Blanket, and two individually packaged FastFire cubes.

20131208-184659.jpg

The SUMA container (2-1/2″ x 4″ x 1-1/2″) is machined out of billet 6061 aluminum, which makes it four times lighter than stainless steel and half the weight of titanium. Hard anodized it is suitable for cooking or to boil small amounts of water for purification and can also be used for digging. I know a lot of guys who use these on the job modify the containers by applying sticky Velcro to the lid and attaching a flag or other near recognition symbol to the face.

The packed SUMA Container includes the following items:
– (1) Compact multitool wrapped in a section of inner-tube to suppress noise from rattling
– (1) 3.5″ Carbon steel hack saw blade
– (1) LED Coin type light with lanyard
– (1) P-38 Can opener
– (1) Ferro rod
– (1) Signalling whistle
– (1) Signalling mirror with reflective tape
– (1) Magnifying lens
– (1) Compass, oil filled coin type
– (1) Baggie, zip type
– (1) Pill bottle, amber
– (1) Wire, 24″ length
– (10) Matches, NATO type with striker (individually wrapped)
– (4) Tinder, Cotton wool type (individually wrapped)
– (2) Safety pins, Small
– (2) Safety pins, Medium
– (6) Water purification tablets
– (1) Roll of high strength braided line
– (1) fishing kit, assorted weights, hooks, and float
– (1) Tape, Duct type 2″x24″ tan
– (1) Needle, sewing type with cover
– (1) Pad, clean medical type appr. 2″x2″ (individually packaged)
– (1) Triple antibiotic ointment, 0.5g packet
– (1) Pencil with attached eraser
– (5) Weather resistant paper

I cannot recommend this kit enough after purchasing one earlier this year from Austere Provisions Co. Oftentimes I am approached by friends and asked about survival kits. Granted, the best advice is to make your own, but many lack the time or experience necessary to assemble a kit that has just the right amount of “stuff.” Some will keep adding and adding to their kit until it’s too big. Others will leave out a critical item. Solkoa has assembled an excellent kit that you can add to your equipment. Whether carried on a first-line belt, in a pack, or the trunk of a car, it’s a great insurance policy. If anything, you’ll find that it makes an excellent base to add to, as you learn more about what works and doesn’t work for you.

I’ll add one word of caution; practice. Become familiar with your kit, no matter whether it’s the SUMA, a kit from another company, or one you’ve made yourself. The last place you need to become familiar with your kit and how it works is when you really need it. Learning how to start a fire when you’re already cold, tired and hungry is a recipe for disaster. The packaging of the SUMA is well suited to opening the kit and repacking as well as customizing.

The SUMA Survival Kit is available now with Black or FDE case from www.austereprovisions.com.
