Mountain ShepHerd Survival School has teamed up with Rocky’s New S2V line to incorporate a real world survival ethos into the line.

Rocky sent two engineers to a private course to get a basic grounding in survival techniques and ever since the crew at Mountain Shepherd Survival School has been available to provide technical support throughout Rocky’s design process.

Rocky has incorporated the 7 survival priorities into their designs; Positive Mental Attitude, Wilderness First Aid, Sheltercraft, Firecraft, Signalling, Water Procurement and Food Procurement (in order of importance).

For example, this survival kit is called the Grenade and comes packaged with the new Rocky S2V Center Hold Windshirt.

OR – Waterford Press

Saturday, August 4th, 2012

Waterford Press produces a wide variety of pocket guides to science, travel, nature and other wilderness pursuits. Additionally, they’ve developed a few that are targeted at the military market. Their Combat First Aid and Middle East Wildlife titles are easy to use and give you a down and dirty look at the subject matter. Additionally, proceeds from the sale of both of these guides goes to the Sierra Club’s Veteran & Military Family Initiative.

Additionally, at Outdoor Retailer Waterford Press launched a new series called, “Pathfinder Outdoor Survival Guide” produced in connection with Dave Canterbury of The Pathfinder School. These waterproof guides are straightforward. I spoke briefly with Dave and he reminded me t hat in a pinch, they could be used as a survival tool. While they aren’t as large or, quite as robust as the issue Evasion Chart (EVC), he’s right. I could carry water with one of these guides, need be.

The other thing that Dave mentioned is that he probably wouldn’t take all of the guides with him, but rather, pretrain with them as guides and carry the ones that are more technical in nature or that you need more help with. They are very lightweight and packed with great info but I don’t know if I’d carry all of them.

One such title that is great for pretraining is ‘Building a Survival Kit’ which covers the 10 essentials for survival. At $6.95 each they are a great value, particularly as an introduction to the basics of various survival skills.

Who Is Tracker Dan?

Friday, August 3rd, 2012

Tracker Dan’s name most often comes up regarding the knives that he makes, particularly the BloodShark. But, there is a lot more to the man. He’s a Navy SEAL but even that doesn’t define who he is. He has dedicated his life to primitive outdoor living and surviving in the wild, on the battlefield and on the streets. He also develops knives and tools to that end. This video gives you a good look into some of Tracker Dan’s background and what drives him.

Winkler Knives has made a few updates to the Flint Striker Set we recently covered. Crafted by Master Bladesmith Daniel Winkler, has updated the set a little.

The capability the kit offers remains the same; traditional firemaking, but a few components have changed. For example, the pouch is now made by Primavera Leathers. Additionally, the striker knife is no longer available as a folder. However, the current fixed blade model is made from 1095 file steel with the spine edge of the handle hardened to consistently throw sparks.

The set includes a belt pouch containing the char-tin, flint, and tinder, as well as “how-to” dvd starring Daniel Winkler. The price has also come down to $450.00 which includes the striker knife by Daniel.

Agilite Adds Search and Rescue Section to Website

Tuesday, July 17th, 2012

Not only has Agilite updated their website, but they’ve added a section dedicated to search and rescue products. It now goes way beyond the Injured Personnel Carrier (IPC) we featured in January. As you recall, it made quite a stir and showed up all over the internet. These new items include gear such as the Sidewinder & ARCH “Instant Harness” Set you see here which works in conjunction with a Riggers Belt to provide sit harness functionality.

These rescue products have been in use with elements of the IDF and incorporate their new TT High-Density Polyester. They claim it outperforms traditional mil-spec tactical nylon webbing across the board. “From tensile strength to resistance to abrasion, UV and chemicals such as petroleum;, or a melting point of over twice as high, our TT polyester webbing performs far better than traditional nylon webbing. “ says Agilite COO Isaac Oppenheim. “We were looking to raise the bar in webbing quality and we found what we were looking for in TT Polyester-we put it to the test in the most extreme circumstances and the results were outstanding.”

Check out the all-new site at www.agilitegear.com and get free shipping within the US during all of July.
