Wednesday, February 16th, 2011

Sponsored by Wilson Combat, the Ken Hackathorn & Larry Vickers Special 1911 Centennial Celebration Class will be Aug 6-8, 2011 in Marietta, Ohio.

Both Ken Hackathorn and Larry Vickers should be household names to SSD readers. Both have earned excellent reputations as World Class firearms trainers and are considered by most as the preeminent 1911 shooters. Larry is also a premier 1911 pistolsmith and his guns garner thousands of dollars in the rare event an owner lets one go.

In addition to Ken Hackathorn and Larry Vickers, the class will feature Guest Speakers; former US Army Marksmanship unit armorer John Miller, and Wayne Novak, Owner of Novak Designs Inc, designer of the world renowned Novak low-mount rear sight. Additionally, Wilson Combat will be on had to hand out prizes to class members.

The schedule is excellent.

Day One:
The 1st day of the class will be spent entirely on the range shooting 1911 specific range drills that highlight the differences of shooting a 1911 vs other handguns and other various handgun drills. Larry and Ken will be alternating the primary instructor position between strings.

Day Two:
The 2nd day of the class will be split between the flat range and the Fort Harmar shoot house. Ken will be handling the shoot house portion working single man movement & approaches, hallways and T intersections, room entry, target discrimination, low light encounters, surgical shooting exercises, etc. Larry will be working the other half of the class on a flat range. At the mid point of the day lunch break the class will swap instructors.

After a full day on the range the class will travel to the Holiday Inn Conference Center for a catered dinner and 1911 seminar.
Ken, Larry, and guest speakers John Miller (U.S. Army Marksmanhip Unit) and Wayne Novak of (Novak’s Inc.) will be hand to discuss the history of the 1911, modern 1911, suggested modifications, upgrades, accessories, etc.

Corps Strength – Bare Foot Running???

Sunday, February 13th, 2011

In his monthly fitness training feature, Retired Marine PJ Roarke, discusses his concerns about protecting your feet during training. Interestingly, we were first introduced to MGunz, as he is known, by Bates Footwear and he is a steadfast supporter of their boots not only for duty wear but for physical fitness training as well. He doesn’t work for Bates, he wears them.

When it comes to information about health, diet and fitness the only thing that you can truly count on is that it will change. Guidance seems to travel in a big circle every few years. High carb, low fat, no carb, heavy weights, light weights, no weights, running, no running, etc, etc. One day this is the best way to train, tomorrow it’s no good. You have to use this new method, new supplement, new gear, or eat this and don’t eat this. For some reason people always think that they have to try something new to get results and they mistrust the basics? Now 99% of this stuff is just a fad that will quickly pass as some new nonsense comes along to take its place. However once in a while something comes along that (IMO) is not only silly but dangerous. What I’m speaking of here is the new fad of “Barefoot” running. Not just in truly barefoot, but the new “Barefoot” running shoes. Now if you are a person whose occupation has you shining chair with your ass for most of your time than this may not be a big deal. However if you are in the military, firefighting, law enforcement, construction work or any field that operates on your feet, than this barefoot training can put your livelihood in jeopardy. Your feet need to be protected, not only when your at work but when your training. In my book Corps Strength I wear and recommend boots for training. I don’t even think running shoes are sturdy enough for what you need, but they are 100x better than these new barefoot “slippers”. IMO they will surely lead to injury. Now don’t send me any scientific studies that were done by the barefoot shoe companies on college students and pro athletes. I live and work in the real world not in a lab. Just the thought of carrying a combat load, or even just running in those things makes my feet hurt. Not to mention what it would do to your knees and back. If you’re a working person do yourself (and your feet) a favor and get some Bates boots to train and work in (I use Dura-Shocks) and leave the “Barefoot Training” to the Cavemen. Did I mention that the average lifespan of a Caveman was about 40?

Good luck and Semper Fi

“Anyone Who Relies on Their Body for a Living is an Athlete”

Monday, February 7th, 2011

“Anyone who relies on their body for a living is an athlete.” -CPT Nicholas Barringer, US Army, 75th Ranger Regimental Dietitian

Unlike “professional” athletes who talk about being “warriors” and participating in “combat” while they play games on any given Sunday, service members really do those things for a living and have really earned the title. In fact, the only thing American service members really have with those in “pro” sports is that they are both athletes.

For several years now, the 75th Ranger Regiment has undertaken an aggressive physical training program called Ranger Athlete Warrior. It recognizes that the Ranger is an athlete but a special type that we are just now coming to recognize and understand.

According to the Army, the Ranger Athlete Warrior program addresses four objectives through the components of functional fitness, performance nutrition, mental toughness and sports medicine:

– Achieve a level of physical fitness that is commensurate with the physical requirements of Ranger missions.
– Understand and choose sound nutritional practices.
– Employ mental toughness skills to enhance personal and professional development. The regiment’s occupational therapist and psychologist coach Rangers on the mind-body connection in order to optimize performance.
– Receive screening, education and skills for injury prevention and “prehabilitation” that prompt effective and thorough treatment through “rehabilitation” of injuries if and when they do occur.

The quote that was used as the title of this article is significant for two reasons. First off, it sums up the very root of the issue. The point now is to increase recognition of this fact across all services and to tailor training for the occupational requirements of all service members based on duties. Secondly, it came from a Dietitian assigned to one of this nation’s most elite military organizations. A Dietitian. Let that sink in.

We find it refreshing to find industry coming to this realization as well. Vertx has begun to develop products for the Operational Athlete, Mayflower engineers their load systems for the Military Athlete and New Balance as well as Under Armour are bringing their considerable experience in athletic equipment to bear on the tactical market. Even our own “Corps Strength” correspondent PJ Rourke, MGySgt, USMC (Ret) espouses occupational fitness and has taken his military experience and is using it to help others develop themselves physically.

The 4-Hour Body

Thursday, January 6th, 2011

At a first glance, “The 4-Hour Body: An Uncommon Guide to Rapid Fat-Loss, Incredible Sex, and Becoming Superhuman” by Timothy Ferriss looks to be another ‘miracle’ lifestyle book that promises plenty while offering nothing of real value. However, most of the information inside is actually beneficial. It is possible, though not always practical, through using this book to indeed become “superhuman” as the title so boastfully states.

But how is this achievable? Mostly through the driving principle behind the book: the MED, or Minimum Effective Dose. A simple practice that values doing only what is absolutely necessary to achieve your goals, whether that be losing fat rapidly or quickly gaining muscle. For example, the Slow-Carb Diet described in the book promises to cause you to lose 20 pounds of weight in about 30 days without any exercise. Other techniques further assist with whatever cause you are currently pursuing.

Of course I mentioned the sometimes lack of practicality of this book. Mostly, it would really benefit from a companion publication. A “4-Hour Body Manual” or something similar, which would better define and simplify the information contained within. I say this because it’s a common occurrence to have to read through the author’s personal take on everything before you finally learn what you were looking for. Also, the author went through a wide volume of testing and describes some procedures that aren’t necessarily available or affordable to every reader.

Despite this, it’s a very good buy. It provides some very valuable information and the stories are generally entertaining. Also, the original title of the book was to be some variation of the term “Body Hacking”, so you know you’re in for a treat.
