The Paleo Solution

Monday, December 6th, 2010

“The Paleo Solution: The Original Human Diet” by Robb Wolf describes a method called Paleolithic dieting, which involves eating foods that closely mimic what our hunter-gatherer ancestors consumed. In layman’s terms, this means no grains, dairy, or legumes of any kind but rather eating seasonal fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts, seafoods, and land animals, preferably organic and grass fed. Unlike many books on dieting, the technique is easily accessible and includes well-researched information on the benefits of paleo dieting, testimonials, a simple to follow 30 day meal and exercise plan, and even a bit of humor spread throughout.

I bring this to your attention because of the not so recent news about military personnel struggling with their weight and turning to methods such as liposuction and crash dieting to achieve their goals. I’m not claiming this as a definitive method for weight loss and long-term health, but like anything else it’s worth a shot. So pick up the book and follow it’s contents for a while. You might end up liking paleo dieting, or at least the results it brings.

Corps Strength – Weight Bearing

Monday, November 29th, 2010

In issue two of Retired Marine Master Gunnery Sergeant Paul Roarke’s series on functional fitness he discusses methods to train for weight bearing.

After almost ten years of combat operations in Afghanistan, Marines and Soldiers know the importance of being in top physical condition. Not just running or lifting weights but in their ability to bear weight. Meaning their ability to operate while wearing heavy combat gear. Today’s front line military is outfitted with the very best weapons, protective gear and communications equipment. However while much of this stuff is made of the newest high tech materials, in the end when you pile it all on the back of a young hard charger, its still pretty heavy. Just the basic four components of a “fighting load”; weapon(s), ammo, protection and water will run at least around 25lbs. Add to that any combination of comm gear, crew served weapons, night vision, extra ammo, etc. etc. now your load can easily reach 50lbs or more. We have all seen pictures of our people humping huge loads up the rugged mountains in Afghanistan (in the cold). To do this for hours on end and still have the ability to fight requires training and real world conditioning, not football or MMA skills. I know from my own hard learned experience that the only way to condition yourself to “hump” a heavy pack is to do it. However while training back in the rear that may not always be practical. A good training alternative and what I recommend in my book “Corps Strength” is the next best thing to your actual gear; a weighted vest. I use and recommend the vests made by VMax. They come in all different weights, colors and are comfortable and durable. I have beat the hell out of mine for the last couple years it is still gtg. It is held securely to your body by velcro straps so it doesn’t shift around, allowing you to do many different exercise movements, I keep my 50lber it in the back of truck and use it for all types of training. Everything from kettle-bells to straight hiking. I think it’s the best way to get yourself conditioned to carry weight. It also is a great piece of gear for firefighters and law enforcement people to train with. Try it, it works.

Tough Guy

Friday, November 26th, 2010

You gotta figure a race named ‘Tough Guy’ is gonna live up to its name. Purportedly the world’s most demanding one-day survival ordeal, Tough Guy is the grand daddy of them all having started in 1986. Last year over 5,000 racers participated in the two-mile obstacle course held on a farm in Perton, Staffordshire, England. The series of races are organized by Billy Wilson (using the pseudonym “Mr Mouse”).

Like many of these other extreme adventure competitions, participants must sign a “death warrant”, which acknowledges the risks and dangers. Gimmick? Sure, but with less than one-third of competitors finishing, race organizers can’t be too careful. After all, the race has previously suffered two fatalities. Why take a chance?

Daniel Defense and Vickers Tactical Team Up to Produce Instructional Videos

Wednesday, November 17th, 2010

Larry Vickers recently invited SSD to C2 Shooting Center for a behind the scenes glimpse of production of his instructional training videos. Produced by Daniel Defense, filming was conducted by his very accomplished crew from Tactical Impact. Fourteen very lucky students were invited in for two days of free training from Larry Vickers. In exchange for the free training, they will be immortalized along with Larry on his multi-disc Blue Ray tactical carbine and handgun videos.

In fact, these should be available for order next week on Black Friday. Keep your eyes peeled for word on www.DanielDefense.com as well as www.VickersTactical.com. They are great for those students who can’t make it to a Vickers course, as a refresher for previous students, or as sheer entertainment for the enthusiast. Larry Vickers is a wealth of knowledge and spends ample time providing insight on why he uses the TTPs he does as well as a constant running history lesson.

Finally, Training SAPI Plates

Saturday, November 13th, 2010

Many are reluctant to conduct training while wearing their issue armor plates for fear of fracturing them. It is also impossible to determine if they are damaged without sophisticated x-ray imaging. Additionally, armor plates are expensive and not easily replaced if they are damaged, especially in a deployed environment. There have been few, if any solutions to this dilemma, until now. Tyr Tactical put up a new product on their website earlier this week. The Ballistic Training Plate features a SAPI cut and while designed specifically for training, is rated to defeat 5.56.

The Ballistic Training Plate is the same size and weight of issue SAPI plates so training will be as realistic as possible. Tyr has colored the plates in bright orange so that there is no doubt that they are intended for training. They are offered in size Small through X-Large. Due to the nature of these plates, purchase is restricted to military, law enforcement, government agencies and firms that support them.

The Zombies Are Coming!

Monday, November 1st, 2010

Zombie Targets - Frans‘Tis the season to hunt zombies. Billed as “The only target that will eat your brains”, many will find these entertaining and a nice diversion from standard targets. In addition to the numerous different versions of zombie figures offered by the manufacturer, Law Enforcement Targets has six different color versions including the dreaded Frans – Nazi Zombie. Each target is 25″ x 35″ and printed on 60 lbs paper. Competition-style target zones are included on the torso and brain but cannot be seen from a distance.

They are available, aptly enough, from www.zombietargets.net. Look for the new Clown Zombie.

Death Race – You May Die

Thursday, October 28th, 2010

Our friend PJ Rourke, author of “Core Strength” gave us a heads up on the 2011 Death Raceâ„¢ known for its cryptic instructions disseminated at the last minute and out of the ordinary tasks. Part ‘Survivor’, part ‘Jackass’, the whole point of the 24 hour race is to finish. Survive and make it to the end and you get bragging rights. We would never do it, but PJ has decided to go for it, wearing Bates Boots naturally. If you are up for the challenge or to just encourage him, visit PJ’s website. Last year’s co-winners were US and Royal Marines and since PJ is a retired Master Guns, he has some serious shoes to fill. Those of you interested in entering the 2011 Death Raceâ„¢ need to sign up soon. They are only taking 200 entries.
