NSWC Crane Hosts First United Kingdom Light Weapon Design Course for Expeditionary Professionals

Tuesday, July 30th, 2019

CRANE, Ind. – Naval Surface Warfare Center, Crane Division (NSWC Crane) hosted Expeditionary professionals for its first Light Weapon Design Course led by Cranfield University, a postgraduate university based in the United Kingdom that specializes in defense technology.

“This is the first time the Light Weapon Design has been brought to Crane,” says Adam Parsley, a Division Manager at NSWC Crane. “The Small Arms Weapon Systems Division was able to really enhance the learning experience for all the students with the access we have to weapons, ammunition, and the firing range.”

Parsley says the Light Weapon Design Course teaches the fundamentals of weapon operation and design.

“It focuses on the development of light weapons, or small arms, and their design and operation today,” says Parsley. “Through this course, our Expeditionary employees will better understand the reasoning behind design parameters – heat dissipation, durability, signature, recoil – and will have better concepts of how to design and test weapons.”

Chris Shaffer, an engineer at NSWC Crane, took part in Cranfield’s Light Weapon Design Course. Shaffer says these highly specialized courses from Cranfield help with workforce development.

“These courses offer Expeditionary professionals the opportunity to gain unique, hands-on experience,” says Shaffer. “They can take the engineering concepts, ideas, and skills they learned in undergrad and apply them to military devices. For these jobs in Expeditionary Warfare, the workforce needs specialized knowledge.”

Students from other commands traveled to NSWC Crane to participate in the course.

“The Light Weapon Design Course was fantastic,” says Erin Thompson, a Weapons Team Engineer at Marine Corps Systems Command. “I learned so much that will be directly applicable to my job and make me more effective for the Marine Corps. Chris Shaffer and the Crane team were great and the access we were afforded to the weapons was incredibly beneficial.”

“I thought the class was really well done,” says Elizabeth Palm, a Test Officer at US Army Cold Regions Test Center. “Adam and Chris did a great job coordinating with Cranfield to be able to offer so much hands-on time with a variety of weapons, especially the foreign ones. And of course any chance to get out on the range is always a good day!”

Cranfield University is in its second year of offering Masters of Science courses at Crane. The Light Weapon Design Course is the seventh Cranfield course since its inception.

“Cranfield offers courses in weaponry, munitions, sensors, and communications that most colleges and universities just don’t have,” says Parsley. “They also have packaged these courses in this condensed, one-week format that is optimal for the working professional who wants to pursue an advanced degree.”

NSWC Crane is a naval laboratory and a field activity of Naval Sea Systems Command (NAVSEA) with mission areas in Expeditionary Warfare, Strategic Missions and Electronic Warfare. The warfare center is responsible for multi-domain, multi- spectral, full life cycle support of technologies and systems enhancing capability to today’s Warfighter.

TRIGGRCON 19 – B&T APC9K

Tuesday, July 30th, 2019

B&T displayed their 9mm APC9K, recently adopted by the US Army as the new Sub Compact Weapon. So far, 10 weapons have been delivered and an order for the remainder of the initial procurement of 350 APC9Ks should be soon. Ultimately, the Army requires about 1,000 SCWs for the requirement outlined below.

The SCW requirement arose from the Military Police. United States military operations take place worldwide and in all types of terrains as well as under every environmental condition. The Secretary of the Army and/or the Chief of Staff approves senior commanders and key personnel as High Risk Personnel (HRP). HRPs are authorized a Personal Security Detail (PSD), which are assigned to guard against outlined threats. To address this operational need, PSD military personnel require weapons with greater lethality than pistols that are more concealable than rifles. The ultimate objective of this program was to acquire a highly concealable Sub Compact Weapon (SCW) system capable of engaging threat personnel with a high volume of lethal force while accurately firing at close range with minimal collateral damage.

Although it’s seen here equipped with an Aimpoint ACRO Red Dot Sight, there’s no word on which, if any, optical sight the US Army will use. They do however, come equipped with backup iron sights.

There is a great deal of interest in the SCW by federal law enforcement. Interestingly, B&T can provide lower receivers which accept GLOCK or SIG P320 magazines, rather than the proprietary B&T magazines seen here.

TRIGGRCON 19 – GEN 12 from Genesis Arms – 12 GA Upper Receiver for AR10

Monday, July 29th, 2019

The GEN-12 from Genesis Arms is a 12 ga upper receiver group for use with DPMS 308AR (gen1) lowers.

The short recoil operates as a delayed blowback with the barrel actually moving each time it is fired, like on a GLOCK. You can see the guide for the barrel in the end of the handguard. They are currently developing a standoff system for use as a breaching shotgun.

The reciprocating charging handle is on the right side of the receiver.

In addition to the upper, they provide a reliability package with beefed up springs for the bolt catch and magazine release.

Due to the operating system, the lower can be fitted with a folding stock.

The GEN 12 uses proprietary magazines. Five round versions are currently available, but they are working on a 10 rounder. The biggest issue was working out the curve shape for a smooth feed.

TRIGGRCON 19 – SilencerCo MAXIM Non-NFA Pistol Update

Friday, July 26th, 2019

Now that the cat’s out of the bag on the Non-NFA version of SilencerCo’s delayed blowback MAXIM Pistol, they’re publicly showing it. This 9mm pistol is specifically designed to operate with a detachable suppressor of your choice.

As you can see, the fixed barrel is threaded for supressor attachment. This design allows the Red Dot to be mounted in front of the ejection port so it won’t slam back and forth as the pistol fires, allowing you to stay on target and less wear and tear on the optic.

In this configuration, the pistol’s lines give me a Walther vibe.

No date yet on when it will be released.

NEWINGTON, N.H., (July 18, 2019) – SIG SAUER, Inc. is pleased to announce the City of Milwaukee Police Department is transitioning to the SIG SAUER P320, 9mm pistol as their official duty firearm. The Milwaukee Police Department is a municipal police force comprised of seven districts with approximately 1,800 sworn officers.

H&K Feels Compelled To Tell Us What We’ve Known For Over Two Years

Tuesday, July 16th, 2019

Way back in 2017 the Army decided to purchase just over 6,000 Squad Designated Marksman versions of the M110A1 Compact Semi Auto Sniper System. Specifically, this directed requirement from the Army staff called for the G28E Rifle which CSASS is based upon, and is used by the German Bundeswehr.

Although the First Article Testing was problematic due to the Army attempting to shoot M80A1 ammunition from a Rifle specifically designed to shoot M118 LR, it’s now all been worked out.

But for some reason, manufacturer Heckler & Koch felt compelled to issue a new press release entitled, “Heckler & Koch to supply new US Army Squad Designated Marksman Rifle.” Granted, they added in a bunch of other contracts, but this isn’t anything new. I suppose it was in response to the ridiculous recent claims that they were going out of business.

July 15, 2019

Ashburn, Virginia —Heckler & Koch Defense Inc. is gearing up to deliver between 5,000 and 6,000 complete rifle weapon systems to the US Amy, which plans to deploy them as M110A1 Squad Designated Marksman Rifles (SDMR).

The new HK rifle is a variant of the 7.62 mm G28/HK417. Under terms of the agreement, the rifles, which are manufactured by HK in Oberndorf, Germany will begin to arrive in the HK-USA facility in Columbus, GA early next year. There, HK-USA workers will install scopes and mounts purchased by the Army under a separate agreement. Additionally, HK-USA staff will kit the scoped rifles with additional accessories from 12 other US-based manufacturers to round out the complete SDMR weapon system delivered to the Army. Heckler & Koch will also provide spare parts, support, and training.

“This is a significant achievement for Heckler & Koch,” HK-USA COO/CSO Michael Holley said. “The HK SDMR system will add much-needed capabilities to virtually every squad in the Army. We are honored by this opportunity.”

Holley also added that this award, combined with the recent USMC M27 purchase, as well as several other international contracts, further solidifies Heckler & Koch’s position as one of the world leaders in small arms development.

Beyond the SDMR, recent HK major contracts of record include:

US Marine Corps – M27 Rifle

US Army – CSASS/SDMR Rifle

Berlin Police – SFP 9(VP 9) pistol

Bavarian State Police – SFP 9(VP 9) pistol

French Army – 416 Rifle

British Army – SA80 upgrade
