Off Duty – Ministry of Supply Introduces Apollo Shirts on Kickstarter

June 11th, 2012

When we wrote about Ministry of Supply‘s performance office wear shirts we didn’t expect them to be as big of a hit as they turned out to be. The concept of combining performance fabrics with business wear really resonated with our readers. Now, Ministry of Supply has told us about their next project, a shirt made from phase change materials. Not only that, but they are launching it through Kickstarter, which we have found is a great way to crowd source start up costs for a project.

This new Apollo shirt is made from a Phase Change Material developed for use in NASA space suits. The material offers you heat management. The concept behind the fabric is that it stores body heat when you’re hot and releases it later as conditions cool. Additionally, it provides moisture management properties and odor control. It’s also wrinkle free and machine wash. What’s more, the Apollo is Made in the USA!

WPRC Applauds Senate Commitment to Innovative Contracting and Warfighter Equipment

June 11th, 2012

Last week, the Senate Armed Services Committee published its version of the FY 2013 National Defense Authorization Act. In the Report accompanying that legislation, Members of the Committee included language advocated for by the Warrior Protection & Readiness Coalition, that calls for a long-term DOD commitment to the successes of the Rapid Fielding Initiative and the Rapid Equipping Force. The language also calls on DOD to support unit-level commanders by providing them with budget discretion to purchase the clothing and equipment they feel is necessary to maintain a ready force.

“The WPRC is extremely pleased that the Committee included this language in the report” said WPRC Policy Director Matt Sparkes. “It acknowledges the success of these critical programs, and makes a strong statement about the importance of unit-level flexibility in the procurement of key items of clothing and equipment.”

The Senate is expected to consider its version of the National Defense Authorization Act in the coming weeks. The House and Senate will then begin the conference process to reconcile differences and create a final product for the President’s signature.

This is the Congressional language.

Rapid equipping and fielding initiatives

The committee recognizes that combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan have resulted in substantial improvements and compression in the processes used to develop and field urgent needs for combatant commanders, including organizational clothing and individual equipment. Following the drawdown of Afghanistan, then committee encourages the Department of Defense to consider maintaining key elements of the Army Rapid Fielding Initiative, the Rapid Equipping Force, and combatant commander level purchasing authority to enable agile responses to future threats.

K9-11X Black Eagle Suspension System

June 11th, 2012

A product of A7 Helmet Systems, the Black Eagle Suspension Systems is designed to fit ACH, ECH, PASGT, and LWMH geometries. The suspension system has been tested by accredited testing facilities. It relies on their Dynamic Suspension Technology to not only provide stability when the helmet is worn, but also when accessories are added to the helmet such as lights, cameras and NVGs which often cause the helmet to ‘sink’ on the head. Additionally, it allows the pad to be thicker in key areas WITHOUT changing the size or requiring the wearer to move up in helmet size. Another piece to their solution is the C.L.A.W. (Comfort Liner All Weather) which is a soft but highly durable combination of comfort liner and sweatband. Finally, the Black Eagle contacts 96% of the interior of the helmet. This not only helps spread the weight of the helmet across a greater are to help eliminate hot spots but there are also fewer gaps that can lead to blunt trauma and traumatic brain injuries from back face deformation.

System attributes –
-One piece with high performance moisture wicking covering
-Testing has shown that the Black Eagle decreases Back Face Deformation (BFD) up to 25% more than current pad systems which is a much needed advantage in not just the ACH but especially the ECH program. Further, the Black Eagle does not “explode” on impact like current pad systems during ballistic testing both with 5.56 and 7.62
-Lightweight
-Full coverage inside the helmet
-Evenly distributes the weight of the helmet over the entire head
-Materials used do not rot and are chemically resistant. The materials are resistant to perspiration, salt water, and petrol chemicals
-No compression set. The materials used do not compress over time like current suspension pads thus they will not sink down. This allows the helmet to be more stable by itself and in conjunction with NVGs. It is also has more “mobile stability” meaning less movement of the helmet when going prone or with rapid movement
-Fully machine washable—air dry
