At the shooter’s back you can clearly discern two straps running under the armor to the Brocos belt. These are actually components of TYR’s new X-frame, designed to support the weight of the armor on the belt.

‘Company Commander’ is a new book on the British experience at war in Afghanistan. Penned by Major Russell Lewis, MC the book recounts his 6-month rotation at the helm of a company of the Parachute Regiment near Sangin, Afghanistan. After his tour he was awarded the Military Cross. His citation reads in part, “Resolute in defence, tenacious and courageous in attack, Lewis has set an outstanding example to B Company at significant personal risk and has been an inspiration to all ranks.”

On Friday, BAE announced DuPont’s intent to purchase the Tensylon unit from them for $18 million in cash. Tensylon is a ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene ballistic material used in vehicle armor applications. BAE said it expected the sale to close in the third quarter of 2012.
Additionally, BAE is forming a financial and strategic development relationship with Nanocomp Technologies, Inc by making a minority share investment in the Nano Carbon Tube developer. NCTs have a wide variety of applications but in particular have shown great promise in armor use. Under terms of the deal, DuPont gains exclusive rights to Nanocomp developed technologies for use in armor protection and aerospace structures.
Before I headed over to the Blade Show I stopped by Über Group. They are an Atlata-based rep group for several outdoor brands which includes Arc’teryx. Having recently returned from the Spring sales meeting their space had just transformed, showcasing the Spring 2013 collection. One thing immediately caught my eye, luggage. The Boy Scouts of America recently announced the creation of a Search and Rescue merit badge. Appropriately enough, they made the announcement during the 2012 National Search and Rescue Conference hosted by the National Association for Search and Rescue (NASAR) and the Mountain Rescue Association (MRA) in Lake Tahoe, Nevada.
“The Boy Scouts of America’s motto is ‘Be Prepared’—which sometimes translates to knowing how to respond in an emergency,” said Bob Mazzuca, Chief Scout Executive of the Boy Scouts of America. “While we are not encouraging our Scouts to practice these new skills independently, we do want them to be ready to lend a hand to the community, and to each other.”
To meet the requirements of the Search and Rescue merit badge, Scouts must complete a series of nine requirements relating to SAR fundamentals such as:
– The process and safety methods of working around specialized teams such as aircraft, canine, and aquatic rescue teams
-Identifying differences between search and rescue environments, such as coastal, wilderness, rural, and urban landscapes
-Determining when Universal Transverse Mercator (UTM) and latitude and longitude (Lat/Lon) should be used
Scouting officials have stated that earning the badge will not qualify a Scout as a trained searcher. In a press release, Bob Mazzuca, Chief Scout Executive of the Boy Scouts of America related, “The Boy Scouts of America’s motto is ‘Be Prepared’—which sometimes translates to knowing how to respond in an emergency. While we are not encouraging our Scouts to practice these new skills independently, we do want them to be ready to lend a hand to the community, and to each other.” Regardless, those skills will serve Scouts well in their lives.
