CES Report

January 10th, 2011

SSD was lucky enough to have a correspondent on the floor of the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas! Here is his report.

The state of the industry – at least as it relates to Electronics – is well, BOOMING –

At the CES, (Consumer Electronics Show) which is managed by the CEA, (Consumer Electronics Association) you would be hard pressed to believe there is any recession or downturn in the economy right now, or at least here in the Las Vegas Convention Center next to the Hilton in Las Vegas where the CES is in Full Swing!

Thursday morning when the doors officially opened the HORDE, and I do mean HORDE, of people flooded the floors of the convention center. For the first day the aisles throughout the whole convention center were literally jammed with people eagerly checking out the Newest, Latest and Greatest, or Upgrades from last years Latest and Greatest in Electronics. Yes, the whole convention center is filled with Electronics – for the Home, Car, Workplace, and most importantly People on the Go! Everything from Stereos, Home Audio, Televisions – Hold the phone there Soldier Systems. Yes, I said Televisions and I mean there are some OMG Televisions on display at this event for sure and for certain! Shape, Size, Definition, Sound, etc…the quality of televisions on display and the sheer numbers are staggering! Yes, absolutely Staggering!

There is one of the most unique sections of displays I have ever seen, which is dedicated to the i – anything and everything i – it is called the iPavillion – Where you find things like the iRadar, iGrill, iGear, iMic, etc…anything whether it’s an accessory for your iproduct, like an iPad power-booster, iPod speakers, iPhone covers/jackets/power-packs/guards/iLinks & LOKSAK can all be found here in the iPavillion.

I understand this has been quite a successful venue in the past, but it has only been open to the Industry. Distributors, Dealers, Buyers, Manufacturers, Vendors, etc…However, this year a select number of Visitor’s were offered the chance to wander the endless halls of Electronics. Let me just say, that this show is AWESOME!

I have had the chance to speak with a few of the really unique vendor’s about their products which I feel the readers of Soldier Systems may benefit from, which I will provide a more in depth review and assessment of later – But for now, CES is calling and I feel the tug of the show beckoning me to get back to Day Three of a Four Day show of everything Electronics. Let me just close with this – If I had all four days dedicated to visit this event, I could not see everything they have on display!

The Last Day

January 10th, 2011

Don’t go through life wondering, moping, muttering to yourself, “I could have been a contender.” If you are going to enter the kit design contest, you will have to do it before 1159 GMT on 10 Jan 2011. After that, there are only regrets.

PenCott-Snowdrift Camouflage

January 9th, 2011

While the US Army might not be interested in introducing a new camouflage pattern for snow, Hyde Definition has introduced their new PenCott-Snowdriftâ„¢ pattern.

Hyde Definition’s strategy is to introduce disruptive elements to the plain white background normally found in traditional snow camo uniforms. As you can see, they are mimicking the shadows and debris usually found in these environments.

Golden Gun Replica Up For Auction

January 9th, 2011

Do you remember seeing ‘The Man With The Golden Gun’ and thinking how sweet that iconic weapon was? Well, it’s not entirely impossible to have one of your own, figuring you have around $2000 to spare. Later this month, a replica of the Golden Gun made by SD Studios will be auctioned by Hansons Auctioneers where it’s expected to fetch somewhere between £1,000 and £1,500. The piece is made of a cufflink, fountain pen, cigarette lighter and a case, and includes a bullet with ‘007’ etched onto it. Total James Bond fanboy item if I ever saw one.

Thanks to SWNS

Check Out Under Armour’s New Boots at SHOT Show

January 9th, 2011

Right about the time you will be at SHOT Show, UA (Booth #6104) will be releasing the first of several models of new tactical footwear. They’ve actually been showing them at various trade shows since early Fall but most of these have been rather specialized shows with restricted entry. The Valsetz Trail boots are extremely lightweight and feature a 6″ upper but I am told that 8″ boots that are AR 670-1 compliant are in the works. Additionally, waterproof breathable models are also on the way. Currently, the Valsetz will be offered in Black and Tan. This photo we received gives you a good idea of what they look like.

UA has been refining their footwear technology for several years now and these boots are no exception. When the weather was warmer I was wearing a pair of their Tactical Mirage boots which are actually low top trainers, to the gym. The upper is made from a mesh so they are definitely not an inclement weather shoe but they are great for the hot, muggy mornings we get here in the Tidewater. However, while the uppers breather very well, a quick jaunt in light rain won’t leave your feet soaked. Why all of this is important is that the Tactical Mirage are very comfortable and the same technologies used to create them have been integrated into the entire line.

Arc’teryx LEAF Releases TALOS Uniform

January 8th, 2011

We broke the story on Arc’teryx LEAF’s new TALOS combat uniform last July and now it is available for order. TALOS is part of the Armor Compatible Layering System and consists of a combat shirt and trousers. Both are made of lightweight ripstop NYCO fabric and the torso section of the shirt is of a lightweight jersey knit. Both top and bottom are available in MultiCam; 100% MultiCam. One of the things that sets this clothing apart from others on the market is that the shirt’s torso is printed rather than a solid color.

Additionally, Arc’teryx has released suspenders for use with the Talos, Sphinx, and Gryphon trousers. Production suspenders will be in Crocodile.
