The EMAG

September 2nd, 2009

Magpul introduces its new EMAG (Export Magazine). Inspired by the popular PMAG, the EMAG is optimized for foreign-made weapons such as the HK 416, FN SCAR, British SA-80, Beretta ARX-160, IMI Tavor, and others while retaining compatibility with the AR15/M16 platform. The front-to-back and side-to-side dimensions have been adjusted to ensure compatibility with as many STANAG 4179 weapons as possible, including most non-TDP spec AR15 rifles and there are a ton of those out there.

In addition to the cosmetic changes, Magpul also integrated the large, single-side MagLevel window found on the PMAG. This is the latest version of the MagLevel so the stainless steel magazine spring is now coated with mil-spec black oxide (MIL-DTL-13924D) and the indicator coil painted with a high visibility orange color. Additionally, numerical indicators have been added to the body to identify 5, 15, and 25 loaded rounds.

For more information visit www.magpul.com.

Note: This item or some of its components cannot be exported from the United States of America without a valid export permit from the U.S. State Dept. due to ITAR restrictions. (Oh the irony!) Additionally, the EMAG is restricted in California, Hawaii, New Jersey, New York, Maryland and Massachusetts.

EOTAC Operator Pant – in UCP!

September 1st, 2009

It seems that EOTAC has been listening to their customer base and has finally released their Operator Pants (Style 201) in the Army’s Universal Camouflage Pattern.

EOTAC Lightweight Operator Pants in UCP

Manufactured from a fade resistant 7 ounce all-cotton ripstop, end users affectionately call this pant the “pajama pant” due to its comfort. I can attest to this claim, they are very comfortable and have a soft hand. Additionally, EOTAC applies DuPont Teflon® fabric protector to repel both water and oil based spills.

All critical seams are double-needle stitched and bar-tacked at stress points. The Action Waist has side elastic panels for freedom of movement. The 1 inch wide reinforced belt loops are strategically placed and accommodate belts up to 1 3/4 inches wide and the gusseted crotch allows for a greater range of mobility while reducing the stress around the crotch area of the pant.

There are multiple pockets to cover a wide range of uses. Two secured back pockets accommodate a wallet or ID while two larger easy access rear pockets accommodate larger gear. Like the ACU pant, there are two slant top bellows cargo pockets. They feature hook & loop closure flaps and elastic drawstring with cord lock for additional security. Inside the cargo pockets are elastic webbing loops that secure up to two 30-round magazines per pocket. The reinforced knees feature external openings with hook & loop closures for inserting foam knee pads (included). Two lower leg bellows pockets each feature a hook & loop closure flap and two chem stick holders.

“This was a natural progression for us. Our Operator Pant is based very closely on the US Army’s ACU pant. Because of that similarity in look, soldiers had asked us to offer it in the UCP. That was an easy decision to make. If it helps our soldiers, then it was worth doing,” said Fernando Coelho , president of EOTAC.

Sizes are available in 28″to 48″ waist and inseam lengths of 30″to 36″ (even sizes). In addition to UCP, the pants are also available in Khaki, Black, Navy, and OD Green. To order visit www.EOTAC.com.

Camo Concepts

September 1st, 2009

Looking back in the Soldier Systems archives, I ran across this photo of a prototype for a Reversible Camo BDU.

Reversible Camouflage

This program took place during the late 90s in an effort to reduce the number of uniforms a Soldier would be issued. At the time, it made a big splash and everyone went on and on about how ground breaking the technology was but ultimately, the technology has been around for ages. In fact, US as well as German forces in WW II had reversible clothing and equipment. What is probably more of a challenge than printing on both sides of the fabric is the design of the uniform that retains functionality and camouflage properties no matter which side is worn against the body. All that being said, perhaps some pieces of equipment such as combat smocks and lightweight jackets could be produced in a reversible scheme. These may well come in very handy for troops who traverse desert as well as areas with dense vegetation regularly. Dark camo jackets have long been used in conjunction with light trousers. Arctic Warfare training often insists on the use of white over trousers and OD parkas while operating below the tree line. What’s more, British forces have been combining patterns both early in the Afghanistan intervention as well as of late.

Mayflower E&R Bag

September 1st, 2009

MRC E&R Bag in UCP

If this bag looks familiar to you it should. Consider it a much needed update to the groundbreaking Diamondback Tactical E&R Bag which itself inspired a whole slew of clones. What makes the Mayflower E&R Bag so special is that both it and the DBT Bag were designed by the same person; Mayflower’s owner. Based on real world experience, the E&R Bag was designed to be used as a grab and go bag in emergency situations or as an everyday tote bag for essential patrol items.

MRC E&R Bag's external flat pouches designed to discretely carry six M4 or similar sized magazines

The E&R Bag features a removable shoulder strap, fixed carrying handle, two external general purpose pouches and two external flat pouches designed to discretely carry six M4 or similar sized magazines. The top flap is designed to carry maps or other 8 ½” x 11” documents in a clear, zippered enclosure. Internally the E&R Bag is divided into one large and two small compartments with elastic provided to secure chemlites, pens, or other similar size/shaped items.

Berry Compliant and offered in Black, Coyote, UCP, and Multicam, the E&R Bag is available from Mayflower online or other purveyors of fine tactical products.

Shellback Tactical Armor/Plate Carrier Sneak Peek

August 31st, 2009

Still in the prototype phase, the AGGRESSOR LE Armor/Plate Carrier from Shellback Tactical challenges the status quo in Law Enforcement armor. Traditionally, officers have worn concealable cut armor under their uniforms. However, this trend is beginning to shift to an externally worn vest, particularly on the East coast and in areas with high humidity. In order to answer calls from the field for an external armor carrier, Shellback developed the AGGRESSOR. While the concept of an external vest has been used by the military for decades, Shellback wanted to design something specifically with the needs of Law Enforcement Officers in mind.

Shellback Tactical Aggressor Vest

One item that really makes this vest stand out is that the badge can be pinned directly to the chest just like on a uniform. This design also allows an officer the flexibility to take the vest off inside the station when completing reports or booking evidence. The design makes it just as easy to don quickly if need be. As an added bonus, several agencies have also found external vests as a cost effective option when they want their officers to also have a tactical type vest at the ready since the armor can be put into this as a secondary carrier rather than having to buy a whole second set of armor with the vest. Finally, with all of these features, the AGGRESSOR can also be used for SWAT and other tactical operations.

Shellback Tactical Agressor Carrier - Rear View

The carrier is constructed from 500 Cordura which was selected in order to help lighten the load on an officer who often works a 12 hour shift. The collar area is covered in non-slip material to assist with shouldering firearms and to keep slings and bags from slipping off. Below the non-slip is a two inch wide strip of Velcro for identification patches. As stated earlier, the AGGRESSOR also features grommets to display the Officer’s badge. Additionally, the lower portion of the carrier has PALS webbing which wraps all the way around the body of the vest to accommodate modular pouches. The rear of the vest features a four inch velcro strip across the back for ID patches. The fully adjustable shoulders are padded with foam and the entire carrier is lined with mesh for breathability. As you can see from the photo this mesh also extends around the edge of the arm hole for comfort.

Designed to carry soft armor, the AGGRESSOR also features interior front and rear pockets to hold full size rifle plates. As of yet, there is no info on which soft armor and plates will be accommodated.

Shellback Tactical tells us the new carrier will be available in about six weeks and should retail for under $200. It will be Made in the USA by TAG and feature a Lifetime Warranty. Look for it at www.shellbacktactical.com.

Who Said Playing with Blocks Was for Kids?

August 30th, 2009

Ratata

Ratata, designed by Tomm Velthuis, might look like a standard box of building blocks, but when properly assembled they create a full size rifle. Imagine what Kindergarten would have been like with blocks like these. Unfortunately, Tomm’s web page for these baby’s is currently down.

Ultramarine Multipurpose Amphibian Dive Knife

August 30th, 2009

Developed in conjunction with Italy’s Special Forces, Extrema Ratio’s Ultramarine was designed to provide a single tool for dive operations. It features a blade made of Cobalt Steel N690 and a handle crafted from Polyamide. There is also an EOD variant with Titanium components that have a negligible magnetic mass.

Extrema Ratio decided to adopt a renewable protective film called Lubra-Skin which was developed specifically for them. This silicon spray is easily applied to all disassembled steel parts and creates a waterproof protective film to prevent salt water from adhering to the metal and causing oxidation. Since it is a spray, it can be easily reapplied during regular knife maintenance.

Ultramarine Dive Knife

The Ultramarine was designed for five primary functions (prioritized by frequency of use in each function); Field Operations, Underwater Operations, Use as an Emergency Tool, Survival, and Combat. Based on these parameters, individual features were refined.

The retention lanyard allows the user to work on equipment without having to sheath the knife. Additionally, the handle was designed with a plus sized grip and incorporates a special anti-slip material developed by Extrema Ratio to facilitate retention while wearing neoprene gloves.

Extrema Ratio's Ultramarine

The knife’s blade includes a specialized net and line cutting system for use in entanglement emergencies. The knife is designed with reduced hilt guards to reduce the chance of entanglement and snaring while in use and the pointed tang was developed as a glass break device. Additionally, besides being a good all around camp knife, the Ultramarine was designed so the handle could be disassembled, the blade attached to a pole, and used as a spear. The blade also features a matte finish to reduce light reflection wile operating in hostile environments.

The Ultramarine was conceived as a multi use, amphibian knife. As such it needs to rapidly and easily transition from the operators waterborne equipment to his field tactical gear. To meet this requirement Extrema Ratio developed two separate sheaths. The dive sheath is a rigid sheath made of ABS plastic which can be worn on the ankle or mounted to equipment webbing with a TEK-LOK fastener. There is also an optional field sheath that is PALS compatible and can be attached to a variety of field and tactical equipment.

Ultramarine Field Sheath

The dive sheath is a work of art and is designed to be sleek and hydrodynamic, with a close, tight fit to the body to reduce the risk of entanglements. The sheath also has a quick-release function that allows the knife to be rapidly drawn by simply pulling on the upper portion of the protective flap. The O-ring and retention system are disabled with a strong pull so in a panic or shock situation the user will have access to the knife. The protective flap uses special anti-wet snap fasteners designed for water environments. Finally, the sheath incorporates two sharpening diamond sharpening plates; one for the primary blade and the second for the net cutter.
