Stay in the Fight: Tactical Reading Goodness from Trample and Hurdle Press

Monday, October 31st, 2011

Most SSD readers already know the name Kyle Lamb. He’s a retired Army Sergeant Major with years of special operations experience at the absolute top of the snake-eater food chain. These days, he runs Viking Tactics, teaches all over the place and continues to astonish students with his proficiency and shooting ability. He not only teaches tactics, he’s passion about inculcating a true scholarly warrior ethos in his students (by scholarly, think open minded and willing to learn something new every day, all the time). Since his classes, and seminars, and traveling apparently don’t keep him busy enough, he also designs VTAC tactical equipment, guest blogs on matters of tactics and leadership and writes books.

SGM (Ret) Lamb’s second book effort is called “Stay in the Fight, A Warrior’s Guide to the Combat Pistol.” It is available online from 5.11 Tactical.

Chambered or Not. This question always comes up. Do you have a round chambered when you are carrying concealed? Absolutely. Let me caveat this by saying one other thing. Only if you are carrying in a safe holster that will not allow the weapon to accidentally discharge. If you plan to shove the weapons in your britches and go with it, you may want to rethink the loaded chamber. I prefer a holster to save the embarrassment of dropping a weapon down your pants leg or into a third world toilet hole…not that this ever happened to me in Saudi Arabia in 1991….
Stay in the Fight, Chapter 24 pg. 264

As with any book of this type, we approached it with respectful skepticism. There can be no doubt the author has the background and chops to discuss the topics he does, but putting that sort of thing into a book, on paper can be extremely difficult. This isn’t by any means a matter of the author’s literary or teaching ability. Frankly, there are as many good instructors who aren’t able to effectively write as SMEs as there are truly awful instructors who can craft slick, well-written articles that disguise how completely out of their depth they truly are. It’s a matter of the subject content. Learning to shoot, just like learning to clear a room or learning to follow a track, is best done on the range, in the field, hands-on. The best thing a book (or article) in this genre can typically hope to do is broaden someone’s background knowledge, provide additional reference material to expand on what they already know, introduce them to a particular topic or something similar.

Stay in the Fight does this remarkably well. This is one of those rare books that really does have something to offer shooters or “tactical operators” of every skill level and SGM (Ret) Lamb’s blunt, direct speech (even candor) is refreshing as hell. He’s informative, articulate, occasionally self-deprecating and his chapters never fail to be interesting. Look, you’re not going to pick up this book and become a deadly SWAT tactical Special Forces black budget ninja pistolero even if you do memorize every single he says, worship it as tactical gospel, and quote it on the forums you frequent (which would, by his own admission, horrify him). You can read this book, at once or in pieces, in between time on the range or before going to your next course, and substantially improve your abilities. This isn’t a marksmanship book, nor does it attempt to be handgun tactical scripture. It’s a great treatise on gunfighting. Take what you want out of it or leave it. Think of it as the written equivalent to the training videos we discussed earlier in the month.

Tell you what else is nice? It’s written for every possible end user. True, only the really driven LEOs and Military personnel are going to buy it anyway, but this is written (and illustrated) so anyone that carries a gun can benefit from the author’s experience; even if you disagree with some of his assertions. (Keep in mind, he stresses at the very beginning he’s teach a way to shoot, not the way to shoot.) The photos are systematic, clear and well positioned to augment the building block style of his lessons, but all of them are fairly self contained…in other words, you can read from the foreward through to the end, or go straight to Pistol Selection or Drawing from Concealment as you need.

We recommend “Stay in the Fight”. It’s worth the money and your time, even if that means spending the majority of your “me” time in the small room for those occasions when you get to sit by yourself and think. Oh, and if you don’t get the name of the publishing group, Trample and Hurdle Press you need to get out more.

5.11 Tactical Introduces New Fabric

Tuesday, August 16th, 2011

5.11 Tactical® just released Flex-Tac®, a patent pending new fabric that is lightweight, features increased breathability, stain resistance and colorfastness and most importantly it stretches almost 20% more than traditional tactical pants. Available August 2011, 5.11 is introducing the new Stryke® Pant with Flex-Tac® as their next generation tactical pant.

5.11 Tactical engineered the new Flex-Tac® performance stretch fabric to offer 2-way horizontal stretch (20% more) with quick recovery and improved breathability and durability. Fibers are woven in a coil so they stretch and recoil each time extra mobility is needed. Traditional stretch fabric is typically made by weaving spandex in with a fabric making it heavy and less breathable with poor stretch recovery. It also breaks down easily when exposed to high temperatures, repeated washings, and any use that’s heavier than simply fashion. 5.11 Tactical also maintained the fade, soil, and water resistant properties of the original Flex-Tac fabric even when the fabric was stretched.

The story of the development of the new Flex-Tac fabric and associated Stryke pant is definitely worth sharing. Francisco Morales, President of 5.11 Tactical, took a trip to Jordan and the UAE, where he met with security contractors and elite US military operators who wear and are fans of the 5.11 Taclite Pant. According to a 5.11 press release, Morales pressed them for feedback on how the pant could be improved for their needs. “Create a performance stretch fabric,” was their overwhelming request and Morales knew that he had a groundbreaking task ahead of him.

He went to explain, “The goal was to add functionality for our tactical operators by increasing range of motion and reducing the amount of resistance the fabric would give them,” said Morales. “In order to maintain our durability and comfort we used the high strength-to-weight ratio of our popular Taclite™ fabric. This allowed us to keep the strong rip-stop weave and add the extra functionality that stretch delivers.”

5.11 Comes to the Tidewater

Thursday, June 2nd, 2011

A new 5.11 Signature Store celebrates its grand opening this Saturday in Virginia Beach. The second of its kind in the nation and the first on the east coast, it is owned and operated by Tidewater Tactical. Think of it as a franchise. The store is locally owned and operated but all of the content is 5.11.

Truly a catalog come to life, you could walk into the store naked and walk out, equipped head to toe to perform most LE or associated tactical functions. Not to mention, they make a great pair of pants that are well suited for use by those in construction, utilities, and transportation. In fact, if you are hard on your clothes while at work or play, 5.11 is a good choice. Additionally, 5.11 offers a great deal of product for use by military personnel in addition to their new Fire/EMS line. What’s more, they are constantly expanding their product offerings.

Everything you see in their catalog will be available in the store and it is exclusively 5.11. In fact, it’s 2000 square feet of 5.11. The big plus here is that it is in stock; all sizes, all colors and you aren’t going to see any other brands mixed in there.

Nobody what they do for a living, everybody wears shoes or boots. 5.11 has a great cross section of footwear choices that will fit most any need: casual, steel toe, or duty.

What I’ve said here isn’t just some ad. I mean what I say. I remember about seven years ago sitting down with Bob Denny to take a look at what 5.11 was up to. I was already familiar with the pants as I owned a pair or two that were made by Royal Robbins. What impressed me at the time was what this new 5.11 brand was doing to spearhead the development of what eventually became the tactical clothing market. Today, 5.11 continues to impress me as they refine their current of products and delve into new areas, always mindful of how the products will complement one another. They’ve put a lot into this industry and for that they have earned my respect. There are a lot of folks wearing 5.11 and that certainly says something.

The new store is centrally located at 375 Independence Blvd near Virginia Beach’s City Center district. It lies across the street from Pembroke Mall and is right down Independence from Little Creek NAB. Visitors will find easy access from the Independence exit from 264 which also makes it convenient for many local LE agencies.

5.11 Tactical is interested in opening stores in other areas. To learn more talk to your POC at 5.11.

Stop in for their grand opening this Saturday, 4 June and mention that you read about the store on SSD and you will receive a 10% discount. LE and Military receive a regular 5% discount which essentially pays the tax on your purchase.

Tyr Tactical Sneaks into New 5.11 Video

Sunday, March 20th, 2011

5.11 Tactical produced an excellent video featuring Kyle Lamb using a full array of their clothing and equipment. However, Kyle’s plate carrier somehow went uncredited. Once we took a look at it we realized it was a Tyr Tactical LWPC. We will say that 5.11 makes a great line of tactical products and their new MultiCam lineup is very well designed. We particularly like their Rapid Assault Shirt. But, they are missing a plate carrier. We wonder if this isn’t an indication of things to come?

5.11 products are available from a wide variety of military and police outfitters. For info on their latest products visit www.511tactical.com. For more info on Tyr Tactical visit www.tyrtactical.com.
