Ops-Core HGU-56/P ABH

Monday, July 14th, 2014

The HGU-56/P long ago replaced the SPH-5 as the standard rotary wing aircrew helmet in the US Army and US Air Force. At last week’s Warrior Expo, Ops-Core displayed a new variant of the Gentex HGU-56/P called the Aircrew Ballistic Helmet (ABH) which they’ve been developing along with the Air Force. It retains all of the features you are used to with the 56/P, but adds ballistic protection (110% of current levels).

ABH Ballistic Specs

The ABH now meets the F1 Fragmentation Resistance Standard and Gentex says that they’ve been able to do this without adding weight. Gentex is also offering a new ballistically enhanced version of the maxillofacial shield (MFS) with the ABH. The helmet geometry remains the same so you can continue to use the same accessories as you do with the current model.

Ops-Core Visit – A Trip Down Memory Lane

Tuesday, June 24th, 2014

15

Yesterday, I had an opportunity to visit Ops-Core’s new factory in Boston for a personal tour by founder David Rogers. I saw a whole slew of cool things but first, I thought you’d enjoy a glimpse at some of the items in their library.

The shelves in the lobby contain a variety of head protection items from a variety of sources, but the developmental Artisent and Ops- Core artifacts in particular, are awesome. In addition to a couple of OFW/FFW models there are also technology demonstrators with early versions of features that are now standard in Ops-Core helmets.

Look for additional coverage later this week.

Gentex Receives SAFE Team Achievement Award At The 51st Annual SAFE Association Symposium

Friday, October 25th, 2013

Gentex Corporation was presented the SAFE Team Achievement Award at the 51st annual SAFE Association Symposium in Reno, Nevada. Gentex, who was recognized for their participation on the Ballistic Aircrew Helmet Acquisition (BAHA) Urgent Operation Need (UON) Team, received the reward due to their ability to enhance HGU-56/P Rotary-Wing Helmet ballistic capabilities within required weight constraints.

The BAHA UON team created a Quick Reactionary Capability (QRC) program that changed materials and processing methods to increase ballistic capability by more than 100% than the standard Gentex HGU-56/P Rotary-Wing Helmet and MFS – without increasing the weight. As a result of the high intensity efforts of the QRC program, the new Gentex HGU-56P ABH System was created.

Gentex featured the HGU-56/P ABH System at this year’s SAFE Association Symposium which took place October 14th-16th. The ABH System provides rotarty aircrew the best ballistic protection possible These ballistic enhancements add no additional weight to the rotary-wing helmet ensuring maxium comfort and mission endurance capability are maintained. The HGU-56/P is designed with modularity in mind, seamlessly integrating additional system components, including laser protective visors, NVG mounts, and communications systems, all of which can be utilized to increase performance and functionality.

Gentex Mission Configurable Helmet Cover Follow Up

Thursday, October 25th, 2012

Since some folks didn’t believe that the Mission Configurable Helmet Cover is real, I wanted to follow up with this video shot yesterday at AUSA.

This thing is ingenious. It allows you to take a standard, slick ACH (of which there are well over 1 million out there) and, once you have mounted the Mission Configurable Helmet Cover, you have an Ops-Core VAS Shroud and ARC Rail mounted on the helmet. Need to go back to a slick helmet for an admin jump or to turn it in? Take the cover off.

Gentex tells me you will be able to order the cover by size and pattern and then specify which accessories you want mounted including color of accessories and whether or not you want pile tape on the cover.
