Army Recalls 44,000 Helmets

Saturday, May 15th, 2010

According to a story just published by the Department of Defense, the Army is recalling 44,000 Advanced Combat helmets found to be defective. The ACH is an Army derivative of the MSA Gallet developed Modular integrated Communications Helmet originally fielded to Special Operations Forces beginning in 2001. The defective helmets were manufactured by ArmorSource LLC (formerly Rabintex USA LLC) and represent 4% of the total fielded ACH. However, the Army has ample stocks and foresees no shortfalls. Rabintex is an Israeli armor manufacturer.

The Travel Shirt from Beyond Tactical

Friday, May 14th, 2010

The last time SSD readers saw Beyond Tactical owner Scott Jones, he was featured in Penthouse magazine (for real). Last year, right before heading out to the ADS Warrior Expo he threw together the Travel Shirt which you can see in the photo. It is a waist length design with mandarin collar, chest and sleeve pockets made from a lightweight material. Apparently, he really likes it because every time I see him he is wearing it and the ADS Warrior Expo-West was no exception. I have been on him since I first saw it to spread the wealth and offer it for sale on the site. It has almost become a running joke between us but he said that if there is enough demand for it, he will add it to his catalog. So here it is. Interested parties should contact Beyond Tactical to order.

ADS Warrior Expo – West Recap ADS

Friday, May 14th, 2010

Last week’s Warrior Expo – West in San Diego was excellent. Naturally, I had a good time. The weather and food are both fantastic in San Diego, but the venue was the best. I had an opportunity to speak with vendors about new products, catch up with old friends, and make new ones.

ADS sponsors mini-shows almost weekly, bringing a tailored vendor list directly to bases preparing to deploy. That’s right, they bring it directly to you. On the other hand, the larger East and West coast Warrior Expos provide one stop access to a larger field of vendors as well as seminars by experts on capabilities such as Fire Resistance, Tentage and Shelters, and Escalation of Force. One of the things that really strikes me about both of these programs is that the vendors all have a proven track record and the gear on display is the best these companies have to offer. Almost all of it has already seen hard use by units engaged in the war, anything that hasn’t has been vetted and is in use with early adopters. It isn’t like heading to some of the major shows and wading through lots of “good ideas’ or outright junk on display to catch someone’s eye. Additionally, most of the equipment at the ADS shows is American made. And, unlike regular trade shows, ADS has a number of procurement options available to the organization that has a requirement to fulfill.

I have already started to share some of the products I ran across at Warrior-West but keep checking back for even more in the coming weeks. If you missed Warrior-West, you absolutely need to make it to Warrior-East!

Revision Offer to Purchase Pacific Safety Products

Friday, May 14th, 2010

Pacific Safety Products Inc. announced today that it has received an offer from Revision Eyewear Inc. to purchase all the issued and outstanding shares of PSP at a price of Cdn $0.18 per share in an all-cash transaction. The purchase price represents a premium of 50% over the weighted average trading price of PSP’s common shares on the TSX-V for the 30 trading days prior to March 4, 2010. The sale still requires the approval of PSP’s shareholders.

Revision is a private company with corporate headquarters in Montreal and operational headquarters in Essex Junction, Vermont, USA which develops and delivers purpose-built eye protection solutions for military and tactical clients worldwide.

What makes this so significant is that PSP is an armor manufacturer and this move signals Revision’s desire to move into new areas of the personal protection market.

Meet the IZLID Ultra

Thursday, May 13th, 2010

I saw a lot of great kit at last week’s ADS Warrior Expo West, but the new IZLID Ultra from BE Meyers really impressed me. The precise application of airpower has become a cornerstone of our Counter Insurgency strategy and without the proper tools to effectively mark targets, that strategy would be nowhere. The IZLID 1000P has been the work horse for Terminal Attack Controllers for some time, but the new IZLID Ultra offers several advantages.

Just setting the two versions of the IZLID side-by-side you can see a distinct difference. The IZLID 1000P (top) is over 10” long, roughly 2.5” diameter and weighs 27.5 oz with batteries while the IZLID Ultra (bottom) is 8.6” long, about 1.8” diameter, and weighs 11.7 oz with batteries. Both lasers mark targets at very long range (>43 km) with their nominal 1W output at 860 nm but the Ultra really shines due to its compact size and weight and well as a longer battery life. Additionally, the new chassis allows for an improved grip as well easier access to the controls. Notice in the photo, the 1000P has a weapons mount. Rarely if ever, is this used due to the size of the device but with the new Ultra, it may well be an option allowing a TAC to mount it to his rifle.
