Osprey Luggage System

Tuesday, May 10th, 2011

I need to start out by telling you that I am going to keep the article on the product level and also let you know that Osprey works and guys are using it.

So then, why Osprey? That’s a darned good question. There are a couple of successes we can talk about. It’s a privately held family business owned since 1974. Their business is solely focused on Packs and Luggage and according to “Leisure Trend” is the #1 manufacture of back packs in the outdoor industry. Finally, you can’t talk about Osprey without mentioning their Almighty Guarantee. It’s retroactive to day one of the company and applies to any product, whether or not you are the original owner. No lost registration cards. You send it back, Osprey repairs or replaces and ships it back to you. Now that’s a guarantee.

Now that we’ve gotten the why out of the way, let’s get down to the what. Osprey offers a lot of products but for this article we are going to talk luggage. If there was a de-facto “Osprey Tactical” it would be our friends at Outdoor Sports Marketing. They spend most of their time on the road talking to customers and based on this experience have packaged three civilian line products into a luggage system that they feel best suits the Warfighter or Government employee. It consists of the Shuttle 110, Porter 46, and Daylite. This gives the Traveler 1 bag under the plane, 1 bag over head, and 1 bag in hand. These bags can be purchased individually or as set. Additionally, they are intended to work in tandem. For example, the Daylite can also be attached to either the Shuttle 110 or the Porter 46. You get modularity, scalability and flexibility in one kit. Let’s take a look at each of the bags (photos not to scale with one another).

Available in Earth and Charcoal, the Shuttle 110 gets its name from the number of liters it can accommodate which translates to 6600 cu in. It also features a 16″ wide chassis with large protected wheels as well as plenty of pockets to organize gear of different shapes and sizes including main compartment, large base compartment, side pockets, top slash pocket, and a zippered side pocket. I got one of these last year and it great to travel with. It’s easy to maneuver and the wide stance of the wheels doesn’t teeter like cheapo luggage I’ve used in the past.

The Porter 46 is Maximum Legal Carry-on size and converts to a backpack using an easy-stow harness and fabric wing hipbelt. It can also be carried with a strap for over-the-shoulder carry. Once again, the 46 denotes the number of liters which equates to 2800 cu in. This makes for a great carry on bag. It’s a roomy, duffle-style bag with four carry handles that make it easy to manipulate. The Porter 46 comes in Earth, Crimson, and Charcoal.

The Daylite offers 750 cu in of load carrying capacity as well as a padded backpanel, a small zippered front pocket, open topped side pockets and a laced bungee. The Daylite can also be attached to the other bags in this article to facilitate movement. It’s available in Granite, Alpine, Tundra, Pepper, Salsa.

Archangel Armor Update

Tuesday, May 10th, 2011

Archangel Armor has done it again. Constantly improving, they have been working quietly with developmental partners to continue to improve and evolve their already revolutionary designs. I can tell you that the systems you saw here in the past are not the same as what Archangel is producing now. This new system, which is is as advanced from their original design, as the original was from what the rest of the market had to offer, is already in production.

Working with focus and test groups has paid off. They have to adapted their core technology to new capabilities unseen in the market to date. Rather than build for the “wow”, Archangel has derived every aspect of their system from an effects based design principal. In particular, the goal has been the enhancement of the individual Soldier’s performance.

The statement that an armor system or integrations platform can act as a performance enhancer would be an outrageous claim, except for their quantified proof. Archangel feels that they have that proof in data collected during a recent test of the system.

Archangel conducted a performance based test (the second they have completed), conducted with the 82nd Airborne at Fort Bragg as part of a Government driven test plan. Over two days of timed performance events, scores were compared between Archangel’s Internal Frame Load Bearing System (IFLBS) and the baseline US Army issued Improved Outer Tactical Vest (IOTV). Based on information provided to SSD by Archangel, the performance of Soldiers wearing the IOTV over the two days was as expected, with a steady and significant decline in measured scores. The IFLBS, however, astounded even this unsuspecting test group. Not only did their mean scores not decline, most individual events scores showed increases, and in several cases the improvement was considered significant. In one case, at the end of two grueling days of back to back physical events, subjects consistently exhibited times in excess of 60% faster than their baseline score taken at the onset of the test when they were fresh and well rested. Participants also related that they experienced a greatly decreased level of personal discomfort and soreness. The test group and the data collectors (82nd NCOs) made specific note of a greatly reduced recovery time after events which allowed a much higher sustained intensity of training for an extended time frame. This also reduced the risk of load bearing injuries meaning the Soldiers could train much hard with reduced risk. Their recovery time between events was also significantly decreased.

There are a large number of new features that make this system very functional in a variety of scenarios and we can’t wait to show them to you. In fact, we can’t wait to be able to just show you the new system. Archangel has promised to release full product information and their test data soon. Look for more details here.

Glock to Donate $100,000 to SOWF

Tuesday, May 10th, 2011

GLOCK, Inc will make a $100,000 donation to the Special Operations Warrior Foundation (SOWF) during the Special Operations Forces Industry Conference (SOFIC) held in Tampa, FL, this coming week, May 17-19. GLOCK, Inc Vice President Josh Dorsey will make the presentation to SOWF in the GLOCK exhibition booth (#404) on Wednesday, May 18, 2011 at 3:00 pm.

During the past six years, GLOCK will have donated $600,000 to SOWF, a non-profit organization providing college scholarships to the surviving children of Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps special operations personnel killed in combat or training.

“GLOCK is proud to contribute to organizations such as SOWF, which play such a vital role in providing aide to the families of America’s fallen heroes,” said GLOCK Vice President Josh Dorsey. “GLOCK, Inc. has a long-standing tradition of supporting those that put themselves in harm’s way.”

Accepting the donation on behalf of SOWF will be Col John T. Carney Jr (USAF, Ret), the founding father of Air Force Special Tactics and current President of SOWF; Edie Rosenthal, Executive Director of SOWF, and former recipient of the SOWF Scholarship, Melinda Petrignani.

“GLOCK’s continued support to SOWF over the past six years demonstrates their commitment to supporting the families of wounded and fallen special operations personnel,” said Col John T. Carney Jr., SOWF President and CEO. “With more than 500 children in our program who have yet to reach college age, this gift helps us assure those widows or widowers that the foundation will be around when that young girl or boy reaches college age.”

Melinda is one of more than 800 children of fallen special operations personnel to whom SOWF has provided aide. Her father, Army Ranger PFC Michael Ruddess, was killed in a training accident in 1986 when she was only eight months old. Through the financial assistance from SOWF, Melinda graduated from DePaul University in 2008 with a degree in Business Administration. In September 2010, Melinda joined SOWF where she works with families and students as a Financial Aid Counselor.

GLOCK, Inc donates more than $500,000 each year to causes that benefit those who put themselves in harm’s way to defend the freedom that Americans enjoy.
