Hurricane Irene

Friday, August 26th, 2011

The SSD home office sits right in the path of Hurricane Irene. While we aren’t worried about our safety, we do doubt that we will maintain power and comms through this event. In over three years we have only missed one day of publication and we don’t plan on starting now, but please understand if we miss a few articles over the next few days.

To everyone else in the path of destruction; Stay Safe!

Choose Your Own Adventure with Mojo Tactical

Friday, August 26th, 2011

Mojo Tactical, a new startup in Hawaii, owned by Dave Tejada will have a booth at the Airsoftwarriors.org Wounded Warrior event at the Schofield Barracks MOUT Site Aug 27 – 28 from 7 AM to 4 PM. In the last two events, Airsoftwarrior.org has raised more than $16,000 to benefit the Wounded Warrior Project.

Finally, a dedicated tactical store on Oahu! They are Mil-Spec Monkey and KP Industries dealers and will be offering other tactical products. A portion of their sales at the event will be donated to the WWP.

You might remember the Zombie Cookie Monster patch from SHOT Show 2010. Well that was Dave. He is going to do good things.

Slider from TMS ADS

Friday, August 26th, 2011

The Slider is an innovative load carrying solution from Tactical Medical Solutions. While TMS specializes in medical gear, their personnel were 18D SF Medics. Consequently, they are no strangers to wearing body armor and the challenges of effectively using the available load carrying real estate on a vest.

The Slider attaches to the side of an armor vest and offers what is essentially a PALS panel that “slides” along a webbing track from rear to front. You store your extra kit in the rear and pull it forward when needed. It’s important to note that it will sit in front of your pouches so it isn’t necessarily something you are going to want to leave there depending on the mission. It was actually originally envisioned for 40mm grenades but works just as well for anything. Medical gear, extra magazines, etc.

Look for an updated video of the latest version of the Slider later this week.

The Slider as well as all TMS products are available for agency purchase from www.adsinc.com/tactical-medical-solutions.

Delorme inReach

Friday, August 26th, 2011

The DeLorme® inReachâ„¢ is the first Iridium-based satellite communicator to enable two-way text messaging, SOS capabilities and remote tracking, anywhere in the world. Use it by itself for sending pre-loaded or SOS message, or pair it with an Android smartphone or a DeLorme PN-60w GPS for full-featured two-way text messaging. Over 90% of the earth’s surface does not have cellular or landline coverage. No need to rely on a non-existent communications infrastructure.

Check out the DeLorme® inReachâ„¢ at next week’s Soldier Equipment & Technology Expo & Conference at Fort Bragg.

Fischer New International Business Manager at WT TACTICAL

Friday, August 26th, 2011

Justin deployed to CENTCOM location

As you may have read already, WT Tactical®, a member of the Warrior Protection and Readiness Coalition (WPRC), recently announced their licensing agreement with the Jordanian Armed Forces (RJAF). What you may not realize is that they’re actually working with His Majesty King Abdullah’s II own military firm, King Abdullah’s Design and Development Bureau (KADDB) and they won’t be conducting business with Jordan alone. There will be a huge WT Tactical®International presence by the end of the year, or so says their International Business Manager, Justin Fischer.

Justin is the first person to hold that new billet (though in fairness he probably got it because we turned it down). Justin is a Navy combat veteran who served in Iraq, Afghanistan, Costa Gravas and the Horn of Africa with several specialized units and (probably more importantly) an old drinking buddy of ours… though at times his hero worship is a little embarrassing. We asked him what he and WT Tactical® were doing in Jordan and what he could tell of us of their long-term plans.

“We’re leveraging the expertise of our SOF end-user paired with WT Tactical’s® years of technical clothing expertise to the International market,” he said. “We’ll start with innovative clothing to match the unique needs of the region, but that won’t be the extent of it. We’re going to be designing and producing high end boots and apparel SOF users worldwide.

The expertise of US Special Operations personnel is a given. What many people are unaware of is the excellent reputation Jordanian SOF units have earned—or that King Abdullah II himself was the commander of the Jordanian Special Forces before assuming the throne. The King is, in fact, a graduate of the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst and a qualified Cobra helo pilot. One of the greatest training tools the RJAF possesses, the King Abdullah II Special Operations Training Center, was built at his behest. KASOTC, 25 square kilometers of urban areas, live fire ranges and other training facilities located in the hills outside of Amman, has been described as the most advanced and complete counter-terrorism operations center in the world. It makes for an excellent proving ground. Units come there from all over the world to train.

You can look for WT Tactical® to be doing business in Russia, Poland, Germany, Australia, UK, Middle East and numerous African and South American countries. This does not mean WT Tactical® gear will cease to be Berry Compliant. WT Tactical® will continue to manufacture kit for US military and LE personnel here in the United States for large unit sales. The kit manufactured overseas will simply be offered as a lower priced alternative—fabrics and materials will remain the same (as will the quality of construction, Justin assures us). The manufacturing will simply take place in Jordan.

Whether WT Tactical® will produce anything in our size remains to be seen—though if he doesn’t want us showing off the pictures we took at the Qasr Al Sarab the night after SOFEX 2010 he’ll damn sure put some work into it. If you have questions about WT Tactical® or if you’re restricted to quarters and bored you can reach him at (401) 841-9453 (ext 157) or via e-mail at Justin@wttactical.com.

Breaking News from US PALM – Introducing CB62

Friday, August 26th, 2011

US PALM has informed us that they will be introducing the CB62 camo pattern into a limited number of products in their line for contract orders only. As demand for this pattern rises once US manufactured uniforms are available from SOD USA, we expect US PALM’s offering to increase and be available for retail customers as well. At this point, US PALM is the only company offering nylon gear in this pattern.

The 3-piece kit they are producing for a national agency is the Desert Tracker plate carrier seen above, a ballistic battle belt and a hardened backpack. They have also developed a suite of accessory pouches. Samples will be at agencies that have already expressed interest by next week.
