Small Wars Journal – Full Spectrum Operations in the Homeland: A “Vision” of the Future

Sunday, August 12th, 2012

The very well respected Small Wars Journal recently published an article by COL Kevin Benson (USA, Ret) and Dr Jennifer Weber (Civil War expert) entitled Full Spectrum Operations in the Homeland: A “Vision” of the Future.

It’s caused quite a stir all over the Internet, even spawning an editorial in the Washington Times, “The Civil War of 2016.”

You need to read both of these pieces. Then, we can discuss. No tinfoil hat stuff, those are the limits. This is serious and I’d like to see the discussion progress beyond the obviously controversial scenario. It’s quite unfortunate that they chose to demonize a right wing political faction to make their point. But, our point is considering the implications and likelihood of such a scenario coming to pass by any means.

Sand Storm Lightfighter Chukka

Military Morons passed me this image of a concept boot he mocked up of a short version of the Lightfighter from the recently launched footwear brand Sand Storm. There aren’t many chukka styles on the market so this would be a welcome addition.

What do you think?

Ironskull Fitness 62 Lbs Skullbell

Sunday, August 12th, 2012

For those not in the know, Ironskull Fitness is a company that sells custom skull-inspired kettlebells, 100% made in the USA. Their latest addition to their product line is the 62 lbs Skullbell. Unlike the other kettlebells available from Ironskull, the Skullbell is completely modeled after an actual human skull, giving it an irregular shape which makes it more appropriate for 2-handed swings than for cleans and snatches. The Skullbell also features a “Gunshot entry wound on front and exit wound on the back with handle exploding through skull”, a nice little design addition if I do say so myself.

Canipe Correspondence – Behind the Scenes at Tac TV

Saturday, August 11th, 2012

Most shooters are familiar with Larry Vickers of Vickers Tactical. In addition to being a retired Army Special Forces soldier and member of our Nation’s most elite Special Operations unit for over 15 years, Larry is an extremely successful tactical trainer, industry consultant, product designer, firearms expert, and gunsmith.

Some readers may not be familiar with Larry’s latest project, Tac TV. Following the success of his previous show Tactical Arms, Tac TV is a 30-minute weekly show on The Sportsman Channel highlighting various weapons, tactics, and products relevant to the tactical professional or enthusiast. Recently, SSD was lucky enough to attend filming of a new episode of Tac TV in Apex, NC. LAV and guest host Clint Lynch were doing a special on the .300 AAC Blackout cartridge. With this round’s explosion in popularity (for good reason), Tac TV puts the .300BLK through it’s paces along side the venerable M4 and AK47. Look for this episode in October or November, just in time to decide on that new .300BLK rifle for Christmas.

Obviously LAV is the host and star of the show, but he is supported by a full production staff and special guest SMEs who come from varied backgrounds within the Special Operations community and tactical industry. On this season you can see decorated Navy SEAL and Centurion Arms founder Monty LeClaire, LAV’s fellow IDPA founders Ken Hackathorn and Bill Wilson, “Super” Dave Harrington, and numerous other experts passing their experience and expertise with viewers around the country.

Tac TV isn’t your usual YouTube firearms show in front of a webcam, it’s a fully staffed and supported television production for network TV. Filmed in HD on the same state-of-the-art equipment as major Hollywood titles, Silent R Productions its tremendous effort and skill into every scene, and it shows on screen. Tac TV makes full use of high-speed cameras, hi-tech audio capturing equipment, and Silent R’s tremendous production expertise to bring the best firearms show on TV.

If you have DISH network check out The Sportsman Channel, but if not, don’t fear. Tac TV recently went live with a fully featured web site allowing you to view all of Tac TV’s televised content as well. In addition to the televised episodes steaming on-demand, the web site offer additional content that is exclusive to the web site and opportunities to win thousands of dollars in prizes to include a custom Larry Vickers-built 1911 pistol. While you’re there, check out the Tac TV web store and Larry’s shooting challenge.

If you’re tired of watching shows about hacks building spray-painted AKs or shows about catty menopausal rich girls with your wife, check out Tac TV. You’ll be getting the best info out there from one of the most qualified experts in the industry. Special thanks to LAV, Eric, Cameron, Matt, and Jordan for having us out to check out the filming, and to Daniel Defense for providing all the ammo and rifles I burned up on the set.

Friday, August 10th, 2012

We first spoke about the new Mystery Ranch Spadelock during SHOT Show. The Spadelock system is modular in nature and accommodates a variety of accessories such as Medical gear, an MR laptop sleeve or a military radio. The Spadelocks fit inside the bag against the body panel for protection and quick access, locking into place.

One of our readers sent us these shots of his 3DAP Spadelock Medical Insert.

This Is A Public Service Announcement or Yet Another Reason Why I Don’t Live in California

Friday, August 10th, 2012

Don’t get me wrong, California is a great place to visit. However, this is but one of the many reasons I don’t want to live there. Opportunists within the State’s legislature have used the recent tragic shooting in Aurora, Colorado as a reason to introduce legislation that would outlaw the so-called ‘bullet button.’ So what’s a Bullet Button you might ask? I can tell you that I didn’t know what one was until recently so I am going to simplify the issue for you.

Unfortunately, California’s gun laws are indescribably stupid and include a ban on removable magazines from ‘assault weapons.’ Fortunately, one of the side effects of poorly written legislation is the application of ingenuity. In this case, California gun enthusiasts have developed a device that conforms with California law yet allows them to use removable magazines in their ‘assault weapons.’ A pistol grip on a rifle makes it an ‘Assault Weapon’ in California. How silly is that? Because of that pistol grip, the law requires that a tool must be used to remove the magazine from the weapon. In the case of the Bullet Button a separate bullet is used explicitly as a tool to push a detent located in an AR’s mag catch. This in turn allows the removal of the magazine. Granted, there’s yet another way around this virtual magazine ban; the use of a ‘featureless’ gun. Somehow a ‘featureless’ gun isn’t threatening and you can use a standard magazine release. Sound stupid yet?

Apparently, somebody feels very threatened by the slow, unwieldy process of using a Bullet Button. Threatened enough that they have introduced SB249.

CA SB249 Fact Sheet

Support California firearms owners by helping them to stop this ridiculous legislation before it becomes law. Otherwise, I’m afraid the only alternative to stopping the spread of this mindset would be to nuke the whole state from orbit, just to be sure.
