PowerArmor Solar Panels From IDG Europe Are First To Provide Ballistic Protection, With Dyneema High Strength Fibers

Dyneema 1

The Netherlands, 17 November 2014 – A new solar panel system for Defense Forces provides ballistic protection and is lighter and more portable than systems currently available. The PowerArmor™ unit from IDG Europe has low-reflectance solar panels protected by an anti-ballistic surface made in an exceptionally strong unidirectional fiber-reinforced composite.

The composite is based on an ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene fiber (UHMWPE) produced by DSM Dyneema and branded as Dyneema®, the world’s strongest fiber™. It replaces the aluminum normally used for portable solar panels, which provides no ballistic protection. IDG says this is the first time that solar panels have been given such a high level of ballistic protection. Panels made in Dyneema® also weigh around 20% less than aluminum panels of the same thickness.

Dyneema 2

DSM Dyneema and IDG Europe cooperated closely in IDG’s development of the dual-purpose system, intended to power electrical and electronic equipment used by armed forces in the field. The combination of ultra-light, low profile (anti-glare) solar panels and anti-ballistic panels with Dyneema® results in a system capable of providing energy and protection ranging from fragmentation to high-power rifle ammunition.

IDG Europe says that the switch from aluminum for the general-purpose stand-alone solar panels also meets calls from the market for lightweight units with high environmental resistance.

“As Defense Forces continue to carry more and more electronic systems into dangerous, inhospitable and isolated places, the need to keep portable electronic devices operable at all times in hostile environments is essential,” says Göran Johnson, CEO at IDG Europe. “With PowerArmor™, we think that we have a winning combination of solar panels that supply power and provide protection. We believe its chances are very good, especially as the two individual products were already being independently considered—and in some cases used in practice—by various Special Forces around the world.”

“Dyneema® offers the lightest armor protection materials in the market,” says David Cordova, Vice President Business Development for DSM Dyneema – Life Protection. “The combination of Dyneema® with the innovative low-glare IDG solar panels provides a unique value proposition to military personnel.”

IDG Europe introduced the PowerArmor™ concept at IESMA 2014, the conference and exhibition on Innovative Energy Solutions for Military Applications that took place in Vilnius, Lithuania, on November 12-14. IEASMA 2014 is organized by the NATO Energy Security Centre of Excellence, and the DELTA State Military Scientific Technical Center of the Ministry of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia.

Tac Apps – Range Rings: New Map-Based Ballistics Calculator from Kopis Mobile

Tuesday, November 18th, 2014

Range Rings by Kopis Mobile is meant to be used when a shooter needs to quickly determine ballistics solutions in a number of directions, for multiple landmarks, instantaneously. This gives the shooter a quick mental reference as he moves between shots quickly. Other ballistics apps only provide a single shot solution.

Range Rings

When you start the app, your location is found and ballistics solutions are calculated based on the most recent weapon and weather information. The solutions, in the form of distance and drop, are then displayed in rings overlaid on a map of the immediate area.

You can add and edit your weapons configurations via the Weapons tab.

Weather (wind speed and direction, temperature, humidity) is automatically downloaded and used in the calculations, or edited manually on the Weather tab.

The appearance of the rings, including their units, color, spacing, and distance covered is all managed on the Settings tab.

Range Rings is available for iOS at itunes.apple.com/us/app/range-rings.

Kopis Mobile welcomes your feedback about additional features or problems. More information about Kopis Mobile can be found at www.KopisMobile.com.

Oakley Releases New SI Ballistic Det Cord Sunglasses

Tuesday, November 18th, 2014

The SI Ballistic Det Cord Sunglasses are the latest in Oakley’s line of SI ballistic eyepro. Designed with a low-profile look which is intended to work equally well on and off the field, the Ballistic Det Cord meets or exceeds impact and optical requirements per ANSI Z87.1 2003/2010, as well as ballistic requirements per MIL PRF 32432. The full release can be read below:

OAKLEY STANDARD ISSUE EXPANDS LINE OF BALLISTIC EYEWEAR WITH SI BALLISITC DET CORD

High Impact Meets Low Profile

FOOTHILL RANCH, Calif. – Oakley Standard Issue (SI), a division of Oakley, Inc., today announced they have expanded their line of ballistic eyewear to include the new SI Ballistic Det Cord ® – covert in appearance, but built for aggressive environments.

Oakley’s history of working with the U.S. Armed Forces, Law Enforcement and government agencies to develop products that prove critical in the field goes back more than 20 years. Specifically, Oakley SI has 29 items currently listed on the Special Operations Eyewear Program (SOEP), and numerous eyewear platforms listed on the APEL product list. With the introduction of the SI Ballistic Det Cord, Oakley has developed another model that meets the impact fragmentation requirements of MIL PRF 32432 and ANSI Z87.1-2010.

MILTRY 14-8893_SI_Ballistic_Detcord_600x600

The Det Cord is engineered to meet the needs of Military, Law Enforcement, and Shooting Sports. The eyewear comes with a rubberized Unobtanium ® nose piece for a secure fit, comms compatible ear stems, and scratch resistant outer and anti-fog inner coatings. Oakley also added Prizm lens technology to the SI Ballistic Det Cord, which delivers increased contrast, reduced eye fatigue and faster target acquisition in the shooting environment. All of these features make them one of the most “combat equipped” daily-wear glasses made.

“The Det Cord was developed in response to a rapidly changing Military environment,” says Drew Wallace, Oakley’s Military Product Manager. “Today’s Special Operation Forces are no longer simply concerned with the finish. It is the gathering of intelligence in a clandestine environment, while prepared for worst case scenarios, that will define success.”

With a restrained look, the SI Ballistic Det Cord has a low profile that will allow users to work within a variety of situations, while knowing they have the best in impact protection.

In order for the SI Ballistic Det Cord to meet the MIL PRF 32432 ballistic impact requirement, the glasses are hit with a 0.15 caliber, 5.85 grain, T37 shaped projectile at approximately 640-660 feet per second. The eyewear must remain intact throughout the test, without experiencing any dislodged components or fracture to the lens. This test is reflective of the hazardous conditions the user might experience when exposed to ballistic fragmentation.

Oakley SI Ballistic Det Cord sunglasses:

  • Meet or exceed impact and optical requirements per ANSI Z87.1 2003/2010
  • Meet or exceed ballistic fragmentation requirements per MIL PRF 32432
  • Lenses block 100% of UVA/UVB & harmful blue light up to 400 nm wavelength
  • Have advanced anti-fog coating and hard coating for scratch resistance
  • Are composed of Plutonite®, Oakley’s high purity optical-grade polycarbonate
  • You can check out the SI Ballistic Det Cord Tech Sheet here.

The SI Ballistic Det Cord is available starting today, November 18th, on OakleySI.com.
