Arc’teryx LEAF – Assault Glove FR

Tuesday, July 21st, 2015

Announced during SHOT Show, the new Assault Glove FR follows the new LEAF policy of naming products after what they are intended to be used for. This name is pretty straight forward, letting you know it’s a glove, intended to be used for assaulting aka shooting and other combat related tasks and that it’s Flame Resistant.

They are made from TenCate Defender-M 10 oz interlock fabric combined with washable goat leather knuckles and Touch Sensor Tsunami leather on the palms and fingertips. This makes them not only FR but also compatible with touch sensor screens. Additionally, the gloves incorporate utility loops for stowage and a cut off option for the index finger.

Available in Crocodile, sizes Small – XXLarge. The Assault Glove FR is in stock at many tactical stores. for further information, visit leaf.arcteryx.com

Oregon Trail Defense – Nub Mod For Safariland ALS Holsters

Tuesday, July 21st, 2015

OT Defense

Oregon Trail Defense’s Nub Mod is a drop-in replacement piece for Safariland ALS holsters. Made of machined aluminum, which is bead blasted and hard anodized, the Nub Mod offers a more ergonomic contact point for the thumb break lever. The Nub features a reverse angle which matches up with the pad of the user’s thumb, and a wider body which decreases the potential to miss the activation lever.

To show how simple to install the Nub Mod is, OT Defense produced a video of a 9 year old boy installing the part on a 7TS holster:

Tyr Tuesday – Jungle COMA System

Tuesday, July 21st, 2015

When I saw TYR’s new Jungle COMA System at Warrior East slung across the back of a chair, the first thing that flashed through my mind was ‘Soldier 95’. The COMA was completely kitted out for use. The basis of this modular design has been around for ages but lately, such rigs have only been offered as stand alone items. What I like about TYR’s entry into the Jungle Patrol Rig arena is that they’ve developed a full set up including the ability to add hard armor plates.

TYR Jungle Load Carriage Harness

The heart is the TYR Tactical Jungle Load Carriage Harness, a lightweight, adaptable platform which can scaled up or down depending on mission requirements. The Jungle Mesh Yoke accepts their complete line of Assaulters Zip-On Platforms and also holds a 50 oz. hydration bladder when needed. The Jungle Load Carriage MOLLE Belt provides ample space for the new line of Jungle Pouches and Accessories. Antimicrobial/FR treated padded spacer mesh is used internally for comfort.

There are three common system components common to all applications:
• Jungle Load Carriage Yoke – Mesh
• Jungle Load Carriage Belt – MOLLE
• Tactical Base Belt – D

Colors: MultiCam, Coyote Brown & Ranger Green

Mr Janky Speaks Out

Monday, July 20th, 2015

Over the weekend we posted a story about trolls.  While there was some pure gold in the comments, this one stood out head and shoulders above the rest.  Mr Janky, we salute you!

It’s a shame that those of us that come to SSD for a daily industry update are continually subjected to the ramblings of the poser douche.

The poser douche knows everything about everything. He’s on the side of socialism when the rest of us are on the side capitalism.

He was never issued a specific weapon but he knows more about it than those who put thousands upon thousands of rounds through the one they were issued by Uncle Sam.

He’s also a manufacturing guru and knows the cost of labor and business.

The poser douche can spot a counterfeit or knock-off widget a mile away on FB or Instagram. He almost always calls them out online even if the company he defends knocked off the widget that’s been in the hands of real users for years.

The poser douche loves all of the JSOC buzz words and uses them extensively.

He’s also a textiles and fabrics expert and requests online that everyone hurry up to make products to support his needs (think Tiger Stripe webbing or something similarly unimportant).

The poser douche holds his gear/apparel to a higher standard and he loves this forum because he can show off his tactical-know-how-prowess (X course he attended with X instructor).

The poser douche is also very clever and sometimes just comments “+1” when a real user jumps in the conversation. Instant cred!

Cost is very important to the poser douche because he doesn’t get issued the cool guy stuff. It’s very likely that he combs eBay for used items (usually AOR camo stuff).

The poser douche usually name drops as a part of his vernacular. It may be his favorite instructor or his favorite tier 1 unit- these vary depending on world events or social media stature.

The poser douche can instantly identify other poser douches online. He usually calls them out with comments such as “cool story bro” or makes the casual “+1” when someone else legit calls them out.

Here’s to you, poser douche! May you fester in online anonymity!

Stuff I Like – Kuhl Strand Cap

Monday, July 20th, 2015

Generally, if you see me wearing a hat, it’s a Kuhl Strand Cap modified with a Velcro pile patch embroidered with the SSD logo. I really like the fit of this runner-style cap which accommodates earpro quite nicely. Additionally, it’s easy to tighten the fit of the cap during high winds thanks to the cam buckle.

I’ve been wearing Kuhl caps for many years and they come in several models including the Strand, Uberkuhl, softshell Renegade and new Renegade. Kuhl alos offers Women’s models. They are available in a variety of colors which change through the seasons so you’ll need to check their site for availability.
