UF PRO – Monsoon Gen2 Jacket

Thursday, July 28th, 2016

Trzin, 28.07.2016. UF PRO® introduced today the new generation of the Monsoon waterproof/breathable jackets.

UF PRO® is launching a new generation of waterproof/ breathable jackets, namely the Monsoon and the Monsoon XT Gen.2 Jacket. The two jackets differ in material and cut; the XT version is the more robust version, whereas the Monsoon jacket offers a more civilian look.

Both jackets are made out of a 3-layer GORE-TEX® laminate which offers a hydrostatic head of 150m, equivalent to a water column up to 15 bar, without any water penetration and great breathability capabilities.

But the Monsoon Jackets don’t only bring great materials and waterproof construction to the table. Two features really set the jackets apart from all the rest.

The hood has an integrated system, which the folks at UF PRO® call the Hood/Harness®. The harness works as a base cap, you simply adjust it according to your head size and when you wear it, the hood follows your neck movements, without the need to strap the hood to your head. Since the laminate isn’t directly in touch with your head, air circulation and your ability to hear is still intact, even while wearing a hood.

The other feature is called the air/pac® insert. This 8mm thick mesh inserts in the shoulder area distribute the weight of plate carriers or backpacks and prevent the formation of thermal bridges. With the new Monsoon generation, UF PRO® glues the pocket configuration onto the jacket, instead of seam sealing them. This makes the pocket configuration extremely water resistant and the jackets even lighter.

The price for the new Monsoon Jackets starts at 440.00€ and they are available in Black, Brown-Grey and MutliCam®.

Head over to UF PRO® and check out the new Monsoon jackets: www.ufpro.si/monsoon

COL Mike Martin Assumes Command Of 24th SOW

Thursday, July 28th, 2016

I’m very pleased to share that Col Mike Martin has assumed command of the 24th Special Operations Wing at Hurlburt Field, Florida. I had the pleasure of serving with Col Martin at the 21st STS at Pope, back when when it was still an Air Force Base, and he was a brand new Special Tactics Officer. He was a Team Leader and I was the Squadron Intel officer and we had a rather challenging commander. I think we both learned a lot working for that guy and that’s why I’m proud to say, he has always been a very smart guy and an even headed leader. There are a lot of great men in that careerfield, so I know it’s quite an honor for him to get that command. Congratulations!

HURLBURT FIELD, Fla. — For the third time since its activation in 2012, the 24th Special Operations Wing welcomed a new commander during an assumption of command ceremony here July 14.

Lt. Gen. Brad Heithold, commander of Air Force Special Operations Command, presided over the ceremony, where Col. Michael Martin assumed command of the sole Special Tactics wing in the Air Force.

Heithold challenged Martin to lead the Airmen in his command toward continued success.

“Continue to focus on providing combat-ready forces…we win, we don’t settle for second place in anything we do,” said Lt. Gen. Brad Heithold. “You provide the kind of forces that scare our enemy…there’s a dose of deterrent factor in your Airmen. Knowing you exist, scares them. Provide an environment for your Airmen to thrive… don’t accept any form of toxicity in your formation. Continue to modernize and sustain the force…these are my challenges to you, and I know you’re up for it.”

The 24th SOW, previously commanded by Col. Matthew “Wolfe” Davidson, boasts a unique ground operations mission set and approximately 1,500 of the 2,500 Special Tactics members in the Air Force.

The primary mission of the 24th SOW is providing Special Tactics forces for rapid global employment to enable airpower success. It is U.S. Special Operation Command’s tactical air and ground integration force, and the Air Force’s special operations ground force to enable global access, precision strike, and personnel recovery operations.

Since 9/11, Air Force Special Tactics has been involved in almost every major operation and has seen a significant amount of combat. Under Davidson’s command, the 24th SOW performed 3,076 combat missions, controlled 6,000 aircraft, conducted 209 airfield surveys and eliminated countless enemies from the battlefield, according to Heithold.

“You guys are crushing it on the battlefield,” said Heithold. “There’s nobody out there like you having the impact you have … and our teammates recognize that.”

The Airmen of the 24th SOW have been the most highly decorated since the Vietnam War. Since 9/11, Special Tactics Airmen have earned seven Air Force Crosses, 35 Silver Stars, more than 100 Purple Hearts, nearly a thousand Bronze Stars and hundreds of Bronze Stars with valor.

“Somebody told me the other day that we have ordinary citizens that are doing extraordinary things and I’m not sure about that,” said Heithold. “In this community of Airmen I don’t see an ordinary thing about any of you, I think you’re extraordinary citizens doing extraordinary things … you’re extraordinary to begin with.”

Before his arrival here, Martin served as the deputy commander for Special Operations Command-Africa in Stuttgart, Germany.

No stranger to Special Tactics, Martin served as the commander of the 21st Special Tactics Squadron and 724th Special Tactics Group and led Special Tactics and joint forces through eight deployments in Operations SOUTHERN WATCH, ENDURING FREEDOM and IRAQI FREEDOM/NEW DAWN.

“Wolfe and Vannessa [Davidson’s wife] paved the way for our future success,” said Martin. “I am honored to take command of such a tremendous group of Air Commandos. Special Tactics permits the ground special operations component to enable precise and lethal airpower effects and we intend to provide the best to the combatant commanders.”

Picatinny Receives Award for Cost Savings

Thursday, July 28th, 2016

The office of the Under Secretary of Defense has awarded Program Executive Office Ammunition at Picatinny two 2015 Department of Defense Value Engineering Achievement Awards during a June 28 ceremony at the Pentagon.

Value Engineering, or VE, is a DOD effort to systematically and creatively analyze the function of items or systems to ensure required functions are achieved at the lowest possible overall cost and their VE procedures have saved the DOD more than $140 million combined.

In the Special award category, the Picatinny team institied these changes:

Elimination of Testing Requirement for the M18A1 Claymore Mine

Function analysis of the Transportation Vibration testing requirement for the M18A1 Claymore Antipersonnel Mine explored the continued need for extensive testing requirements for Claymore mines. By analyzing historical data, engineers were able to determine that some testing requirements for the Claymore were unnecessary and could be eliminated. This reduced the cost and time associated with the previous testing standard. The overall Value Engineering Savings: $49,000.

Clipped Bulk Pack for 5.56 mm pack out

This Value Engineering effort designed and developed the 5.56 mm ammunition Clipped Bulk Pack, an ammunition pack that holds 5.56 mm bullets, to gain significant savings over the current AB57 bandoleer-style pack. A bandoleer is a belt fitted with small pockets or loops for carrying cartridges. The Clipped Bulk Pack eliminates the need for bandoleers and provides for 60 additional rounds per M2A1 metal ammunition container. It is more robust, with longer shelf life than the existing fiberboard commercial pack. The overall Value Engineering Savings: $1.731 million.

Removing the Base Cover Assembly of 120 mm HE Projectile

120 mm High Explosive (HE) Mortar Projectiles previously required a base cover be welded to the aft, or back, of the projectile to avoid a catastrophic failure if there is a defect called a “pipe” in the body. This VE effort eliminated the base cover through an enhanced ultrasonic inspection process that will be able to detect the same “pipe” defect. The overall Value Engineering Savings: $277,000.

For the project/program award they institued the re-use of the 155mm M483A1 shell bodies.

The Project Manager Combat Ammunition Systems won the “project” award for its work developing a process to re-use 155 mm M483A1 Dual-Purpose Improved Conventional Munition (DPICM) shell bodies in producing M1123 and M1124 Extended Range IR and VL Illuminating projectiles. This provides the U.S. Soldiers with extended range illumination and an additional 5km of range at a considerable reduced price.

The re-use of the 155mm M483A1 Dual Purpose Improved Conventional Munition (DPICM) shell bodies achieved a net three year savings of $32.197 million.

Countdown to the 2017 Defoor Proformance Training Schedule

Wednesday, July 27th, 2016

I just got this note from Kyle Defoor.

Our complete 2017 open enrollment schedule will be posted around 0200 Zulu Friday July 29.

For the past two years we have sold out of every class and had full waiting lists months out from the actual class dates. This year we strived to get the full schedule out at one time and early to allow everyone an equal chance to grab a slot. Luckily, due to an election year, almost all of our mil/LE/ and gov clients scheduled 2017 training early as well so we are one month ahead of schedule.

In 2016 I added a much needed medical block to all OE classes and it has been met with great enthusiasm and success. In 2010 we added a mindset brief that has become part of who we are. Once again next year we are adding more value to the classes by conducting combatives in each class to go with the firearm being taught. To us this is welcome and timely. Along with mindset and basic medical we all here at DPS feel these are interconnected skills for our target audience and should be taught together. In the past, this wasn’t possible but just as a shooter gets better with practice and gear changes over time I and my crew have gotten better and learned how to teach more effectively. Having over 1000 students a year for a 5 years in a row does that.

Students will again see and experience direct feedback from our contracted work in regards to how we are able to fit in these additional subjects and still maintain the shooting curriculum we have become known for. Yes there are longer hours but we think everyone will appreciate the effort and knowledge spread from the ten thousand hands that came before us.

Me and the boys look forward to training with all those who choose to burn some quality reps with us in 2017. Thank you to all those that follow, support, train with, and allow us the opportunity.

Respect,
Kyle Defoor
