Korean War Veteran Receives Eagle Scout Rank

Tuesday, October 23rd, 2018

After nearly 70 years of waiting, Ed Soria finally received his Eagle Scout Award.

According to the Boy Scouts of America, Ed served in the US Army during the Korean War. Shortly before leaving for duty, Ed submitted his paperwork to earn the rank of Eagle Scout but never received his award, until last week.

During the war, Ed and 700 others were captured and taken as prisoners of war. Only 296 of those POWs survived (known as the Tiger Survivors for the Tiger Death March) and Ed was fortunate enough to be one of them. To this day, Ed feels strongly that his experience as a Boy Scout directly contributed to his survival.

“My Eagle Scout training helped me tremendously to survive in a very harsh environment,” Soria said.

While he believes that the award may have been given to his mother while he was gone, it never surfaced when he returned home from the war. He then went on to serve again in Vietnam years later.

68 years after submitting his final paperwork, Ed finally received his Eagle Scout award at his home in Lake Shastina, California. “Only in America, such a free country, a beautiful country that we have, can a man accomplish his dreams – as far as you can go – and it’s all up to you,” Soria says.

Soria says he still keeps in contact with the remaining Tiger Survivors. He plans to hang his Eagle Scout medals with his other military medal accomplishments in his home.

The Design and R&D Team at PDW states:

“Our Raider Field Pant is without a doubt our best selling pant style and currently used across the globe. A wide array of discriminating outdoorsmen, adventurer travellers and users in the government to the DoD has enthusiastically embraced this pant. The most requested iteration to follow up our first 5050 NYCO ripstop version was to produce these in our popular Guide Cloth. This Raider Pant features our 2.0 version of our Guide Cloth, which is tougher, lighter, and more abrasion resistant. It can be worn year round in great range or conditions, environments, dries fast and resists dirt and stains. The styling is purpose driven but can easily worn from wilderness to urban setting with an understated and unaffected appearance. While our MILSPEC 5050 NYCO version remains a staple for many, those looking for a more technical variation in a superlative all around field and utility pant, this iteration in our Guide Cloth is an ideal choice.”

Shadow Systems Commits to Donating $7,500 to Law Enforcement Charities with Release of Limited Edition Thin Blue Line Pistol

Monday, October 22nd, 2018

Plano, TX (October, 2018) – Shadow Systems, a US-based manufacturer of Glock compatible firearms, parts, and accessories, is proud to announce the release of 5 Limited Edition Thin Blue Line Pistols, to support the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund. 100% of the $1,500 purchase price of each limited edition pistol will be donated to the National Law Enforcement Officer Memorial Fund or another law enforcement charity of the customer’s choice.

The Shadow Systems team is made up of former law enforcement officers and military veterans, and has been a supporter of military and law enforcement groups since the company’s founding. Considerations from using weapons in the field as LEOs and in military combat have been what fuels the engineering behind the Shadow Systems product line; the company has even created custom offerings at the request of law enforcement agencies.

The Thin Blue Line Limited Edition pistols were created to show pride for law enforcement and the company has decided to take that pride one step further by donating 100% of the purchase price of each pistol to a law enforcement charity.

“Our team has the utmost respect for our law enforcement community. We acknowledge how difficult their job is and are happy to have the opportunity to support their community with the release of this pistol. I am hopeful that our modest donation will find its way to provide some small relief to the families of those heroes who have fallen in the line of duty.”

– Trevor Roe, General Manager

The Thin Blue Line Pistol features the Optics Ready Window Cut Slide, which accomodates a Trijicon RMR or Holosun red dot optic. The window cut on the slide allows a blue-lined Threaded Fluted DLC Barrel to peek through. The Glock frame of the pistol has been modified with a hand-done Enhanced Traction stippled grip job featuring a double undercut, scalloping around the magazine button, and the addition of index pads to each side of the frame; these modifications allow the gun to sit more comfortably in the hand and provide enhanced controllability without feeling too rough to carry daily. Machined from hardened 17-4 stainless steel and coated in cutting edge hard-use DLC, the slide features aggressively raked front and rear serrations and precisely executed chamfers and radiuses throughout. The Thin Blue Line Pistol also features the Shadow Systems Elite Flat-Faced Aluminum Trigger, with a blue coating along with a tuned 4-4.5lb pull weight trigger pack.

Electronic warfare: A Battlefield on a Different Wavelength

Monday, October 22nd, 2018

ZAGAN, Poland — Soldiers on the ground are now capable of rapidly reacting to electronic and cyber data rather than waiting on their higher echelons.

Soldiers assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, currently deployed in Poland, are among the first brigades supporting Atlantic Resolve to train on a new system that enables a team to forward deploy and respond to enemy frequencies using new electronic warfare, or EW, technology.

Electronic warfare, known as the battle in the electromagnetic spectrum, relies on data and signals to survey, fight and defend. Collecting enemy radio signals, sensing radar of an incoming threat, and utilizing radio waves to confuse or disable an enemy’s electronic communication methods are all means in which electronic warfare specialist teams strive to train to perfection.

Team members are learning to better operate and integrate EW capabilities, including the VROD, VMAX and Raven Claw. The VROD and VMAX are part of the backpack system that surveys the field from an electromagnetic perspective and delivers limited electronic assault capabilities such as signal interception and jamming. Raven Claw, a mobile computer system, offers on-the-ground planning and management without any network connection.

“These teams are tied to surveying the battlefield, going out with the scouts and being the lead elements,” said Sgt. 1st Class Jerry Wheeler, the noncommissioned officer in charge of the electronic warfare section, Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division. “We’re using it for real-time information.”

Utilizing both dismounted and mounted systems allows forward deployed Soldiers to act on electromagnetic information as they receive it.

“Having it [EW technology] at this level helps a local commander make more EW type decisions,” said U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Benjamin Donahue, an electronic warfare noncommissioned officer assigned to 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division. “If you have it at only the high echelons, you’re waiting on a report to come down later, versus something you can do right now.”

Though Ironhorse Soldiers did not have the opportunity to train on the equipment before their rotational deployment across Europe, they quickly brought themselves up-to-date.

“We never saw it before we came out here,” said Wheeler. “We had a month of training at Grafenwoehr, Germany. In the future, you would train before coming out. We’ve got a good handle on it.”

Later this year, Soldiers in the electronic warfare field, in addition to the entire 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, will put their training to the test at Combined Resolve XI, a multinational training exercise at the Joint Multinational Readiness Center, Hohenfels Training Area, Germany.
