Brigantes Presents – High Angles Solutions – Black Crows Orb Freebird Militairi Review: (with a Touring binding set up)

Wednesday, February 20th, 2019

The Militairi ski is a great Intermediate/advanced touring ski. Within the Touring category it is an ‘all-rounder’; at 91mm underfoot it is light and manoeuvrable both up and downhill and the surface area gives enough float in soft snow. At 179cm long it is a good compromise of manoeuvrability and speed. With a turn radius of 18m it is turns quicker than your average stiffer ski.

The main differences (other than the colour) between the Militairi and standard Orb Freebird is the full titanial plate and thicker edges. The full-length plate makes the ski 5% stiffer which gives it more strength and helps military users who are carrying more weight on their backs; it should prevent bindings being ripped out of the ski. It also helps the ski punch through in changeable snow conditions. The thicker edges make the ski tougher preventing less edges being popped and gives the ski more edge tuning and longevity.

When skied the Militairi ski has slightly more grunt than the civilian Orb Freebird, it needs to be pushed to get the most out of it; passenger skiers should treat with care.

The stiffer titanial plate on the Militairi gives it more torsional rigidity which allows it to perform well when carved on piste and gives it more pop in fresh snow. The stiffer tails should be respected, back seated skiers may find that the ski propels them forward, which can be a positive for advanced skiers but not so much for nervous beginners. The stiffer plate does make the ski more responsive on short terms and there is no chatter at high speeds like on the standard Orb Freebird.

In summary, a ski that will please a lot of people as it punches well above its weight category in terms of downhill performance and yet is light and nimble on the uphill.

Help Marco Gonzalez’ Son Come Home

Wednesday, February 20th, 2019

Many of you may know Marco Gonzalez from his time as a SEAL or at the helm of Global Defense Initiatives. You may know his son Luke as well, who is also a veteran.

Unfortunately, Luke was accused of theft while traveling in Thailand by a fellow American he had recently met. He was arrested and initially spent two months in a Thai jail. He is currently out on bail, awaiting trial in April, but can’t leave Thailand.

As you can imagine, legal assistance in this case is very expensive, as is providing a place for Marco and Luke to stay while this drags out. Some of Marco’s friends have set up a GoFundMe to help out and I encourage you to do so.

H&K Begins M27 IAR Deliveries

Tuesday, February 19th, 2019

Even though the US Marine Corps Issues a sole source contract to purchase additional M27 Infantry Assault Rifles to German manufacturer Heckler & Koch last April, the service had to wait for funding. An H&K employee mentioned to me during last month’s SHOT Show that deliveries would begin now that funding is in place.

Today, H&K released these photos of M27s be prepped for shipment to the Marines from their warehouse in Georgia.

For those of you unfamiliar with the M27 IAR, it was first adopted by the Marines in 2010. Made in Germany, the IAR is based on the HK416, a piston driven 5.56mm rifle. The concept behind the IAR was to supplant the belt-fed M249 Squad Automatic Weapon in the Infantry Squad with the more compact box-fed design of the M27.

In 2017, the Corps decided to expand the M27’s role, with the plan of issuing it to all members of the rifle platoon. This decision of limited fielding, based on Commandant of the Marine Corps, Gen Robert Neller’s saying, “All Marines are riflemen, but not all Marines are infantrymen,” resulted in the sole source contract awarded last year.

Brownells – AR-15 20 Round Waffle Steel Magazine

Tuesday, February 19th, 2019

There are a lot of options if you’re in the market for a retro AR-15 clone, like Brownells’ Retro line, but it’s almost impossible to source the original-style 20 round waffle stamped steel magazines. Brownells wanted to offer the whole experience, so they made their own.

Externally, these look like the original magazines thanks to magazine body & floorplate made exclusively for Brownells by Nodak Spud, but the internals (follower and spring) are from Brownells USGI 20rd aluminum magazines, making them much more reliable.

US Army Fields Modular Handgun System to the Military Police School

Tuesday, February 19th, 2019

In December of last year, the US Army commenced fielding the M17 and M18 variants of the Modular Handgun System manufactured by SIG the Military Police School At Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.

According to Mark Farley, USAMPS deputy commandant, “The (Beretta M9s) we currently have are breaking more often, which causes readiness issues,” explaining that the school’s M9s have fired on average about 20,000 to 30,000 rounds. He stated that a typical handgun will last through only about 10,000 before they start to have significant issues.

USAMPS instructor Gary Homer stated that every MHS is test fired before leaving the factory with 13 rounds; three to break in the weapon and 10 to test accuracy. He said each one must hit 10 out of 10 at 25 meters in a 3-inch group. Additionally, he claimed that MHS barrels last for 25,000 rounds.

“The Military Police Corps, is about 16 percent female Soldiers, so this is a big deal when you’re talking about Soldier lethality and accuracy,” Farley said as he touted the Modular grips of the pistol. “For all Soldiers to be able to hold that weapon with a proper grip and use the right fundamentals of firing — it’s very important in order for them to be able to engage the target and thereafter. One size does not fit all.”

The instructors also like the consistent trigger pull with MHS. Rather than the M9’s initial trigger pull of about 14 pounds and then about five pounds as the pistol transitions to single action, MHS is the same no matter which round you are firing.

Scarborough believes the grip size and consistent trigger pull will really help when Soldiers qualify using the new firing table now hitting the field.

Although they’ve only been fielded 100 pistols so far, the MP School eventually expects to receive 1,400 MHS.
