Each year in autumn the international maritime Special Forces-Outfitter outer-limits organizes its EXPERIENCE WEEK for Special Forces taking place at a mountain lake in the Austrian Alps. The reason for this may not only be related to the fact that the members of international maritime special forces from almost all continents need to test the specialized equipment in bad conditions but also that it simply has to be cold and wet for the frogmen to jump into the water. SPARTANAT.COM was with them and had a close look at the gear.
This image depicts the optimum conditions fairly well. Also, you can spot one of the latest products, the Rebreather MK1 – a product of the company SIEL/OMG – which was thoroughly tested. We will soon give a comprehensive introduction into the functionality of the device, which is available as a military, antimagnetic model and a civil version.
Frogmen do not have to rely on their physical condition exclusively: SUEX provides a variety of DPVs and DPDs (Diver Propulsion Vehicles and Diver Propulsion Devices) as well as DTCs (Dry Tube Containers). With these devices it is possible to approach targets located at a distance of up to 25 kilometers.
Also, sufficient equipment can be transported: these diving containers hold 50 or 100 liter and are moved by frogmen using DPVs. SUEX is the worldwide leader regarding the development and production of these special military devices. Outer-limits is the Senior Consultant of SUEX and responsible for all international public administrations well as training and education.
Who prefers to stay above water, can rely on this classic product: The folding boat Commado 545 – produced by the company Klepper – allows for quick and silent above water movement and can easily be transported dismantled.
We always knew that frogmen are the beach boys within the military. The new thing is that they can get surf boards now. The surf board of the company Lampuga is inflatable and motorized, it can be used for approaches on the surface and reaches speeds of up to 50 kph.
At the EXPERIENCE WEEK you can also come across many classics, such as the company Poseidon, which in terms of diving equipment has much more to offer than just masks
and of course you can find Draeger, which provide Rebreather, diving masks and practical tests of new amplifiers.
Moreover, the X-Shut system offers stunning technical solutions. The mounting arms of the system can equally be used for the HAHO/HALO parachuting as well as for diving. Or it can even be combined, which is not unusual for triphibians.
Outer-limits also offers its own Tactical Dry Suit collection. Everything can be custom-build: a variety of breathable laminates, camouflage patterns, IR and heat-absorbing materials, sealing seams, which are particularly tear-resistant, MOLLE applicator and so on. All of these suits are manufactured only in Europe and exclusively for outer-limits. This guarantees quick, individual solutions, which are adapted to the specific requirements.
Those who get wet feet, also need special shoes: Together with the company HAIX outer-limits has launched SEA EAGLE. The boots are also availabe in Tan now.
When exciting the water under potential bombardment, ballistic protection is essential: the SAPI plates from outer-limits are one of a kind. Even .338 Lapua AP cannot puncture the plates.
The base camp, where the annual meeting of amphibian Special Forces takes place, shows itself from its best side, even when it’s rainy.
Outer-limits is the international sales partner of all the companies presenting their products at the EXPERIENCE WEEK. The entire equipment presented as well as the compatible training are available at outer-limits.

SSD’s Whiskey 5 is a recurring feature that asks industry organizations, “Who, What, Where, When, and Why?” It’s a column intended to give you a more in-depth look at those manufacturers, trainers and individuals that make this industry unique. Today we’ll be taking a look at the 37 PSR Gun Club, which we originally talked about back in 2012.
Who
The 37 PSR Gun Club is a shooting range and training facility run by Retired Special Forces NCO Frankie McRae. McRae also operates Raidon Tactics, a fundamentals-to-Special-Operations training organization which holds most of its open-enrollment courses at 37PSR.
What
37 PSR Gun Club is a full service low restriction outdoor shooting range and training facility featuring covered firing lines with handgun, rifle and shotgun shooting positions, tactical training, competition bays, and a 360-degree ballistic rated shoot house. 37 PSR also houses a gun shop with full gunsmithing services. 37 PSR is open to shooters of all skill levels from beginners to special operations troops, and offers families everything from a Woman’s Only Shooting program to a Youth Shooting Program and Family Steel Challenge Matches. 37 PSR’s staff and firearms instructors have many years experience in either Special Forces or the US Special Operations Command.
When
McRae bought the facility in 2009, when it was barely recognizable as a range. Using his own and an investor’s funds, he recreated the facility from the ground up and opened it for training later that same year.
Where
37 PSR Gun Club is based in Bunnlevel, North Carolina, between Fayetteville and Lillington, just off HWY 210, 45 minutes from the Fairgrounds in Raleigh and 15 minutes from Fort Bragg.
Why
Initially planned as a DoD-specific training site, 37 PSR evolved into a civilian-friendly range offering everything from firearms fundamentals classes for children to advanced skills courses for special operators.
McRae realized the Fort Bragg area, home to numerous highly-trained troops and their families, lacked a low-restriction range where those troops and families could actually train rather than just shoot (no more than two rounds at a time, no drawing from the holster, no movement, nothing but sterile, square range noisemaking). 37 PSR Gun Club filled a dire need for a real place to train, from cradle to adulthood, without the mind-numbing restrictions of the typical shooting range. Despite detours from the original plan, and a near-catastrophic “hoarding instead of shooting” lull after Sandy Hook, 37 PSR continues to build its client base and expand both its facility and services offered.

November 7th, 2016: VZ Weapon Solutions (A VZ Grips Company) is proud to announce its newest revolutionary product; The VZ AR Grip (ARG). The ARG’s are precision machined, and textured G-10 AR pistol grips designed to work with every AR variant currently available in the market. The ARG’s are precision machined out of one solid piece of G-10 laminate (A first ever!). The end result is a “rock solid” & controlled grip.
With innovation and function as their leading edge, VZ did not rest on its laurels by merely matching their popular patterns to an AR pistol grip. VZ re-designed the ARG from the ground up. The grip angle on the ARG was adjusted to a 17 degree angle to prevent grip fatigue and allow the shooter maneuverability around tight spaces. The ARG also comes in two sizes to accommodate every shooters needs, a standard and “Shorty” version are available.
“We hope to continue to offer folk’s products that they can depend on day in, and day out.”, “VZ Weapon Solutions is more than just a side project for us, it’s our way of showing the newer generation of shooters that we are looking out for them too.” -John VanZyck (VZ Grips Owner).
Color options will eventually be a myriad of patterns/ colors to match all of their existing gun grips. For now the first available patterns will be: Alien, Frag, Recon, Diamond Slant, and Operator 2. MSRP starts at $95.00 for Standard, and Shorty grips.

In Special Forces, nothing is given and everything is earned. Fresh on a team as an 18 Bravo (Special Forces Weapons Sergeant) and hungry to show how valuable I was to the detachment, I wanted to bring the tactical capabilities of my unit a step up. I had seen other 18B’s running pre-deployment range work ups for their teams, but their programs seemed so vanilla and rudimentary. “Ready up” drills and basic lateral shooting with some depth movement; essentially, comfort food drills.
But we were Special Forces. Why wouldn’t we go beyond what was taught in the regular Army?
I laid out a plan to my Team Sergeant. I could make our guys better tacticians as well as better shooters. Starting with marksmanship from static positions at fixed distances, we would progress into both linear and lateral movement, eventually incorporating weapons manipulation on the move and under stress before applying these skills in “real-world” settings.
Taking my team through that process, I got to see first hand, exactly how other pro-end users learn. I would build on that to continually refine my POI (Program of Instruction), through the rest of my career in the US Army but there was a bigger lesson ahead…
When we got in our first gunfight, there were a number of tactics we had trained for on the flat range that proved impractical in combat. Trying to assume a “correct” marksmanship position took a backseat to necessity when the shooting started. Quick and accurate fire came from shooting in natural positions, not fighting the body’s center of gravity and orienting plates to the threat. In real world direct action missions with simultaneous clears, we discovered coming in high gun meant the M4 could be used to push, pin or drive a threat out of a threshold, whereas in the shoot houses, high gun was frowned upon as something SEALs did.
In combat, that hubris went out the window. We were fighting with rifles inside of rooms, dealing with anywhere from zero to fifty people who we had to immediately identify as a shoot or no-shoot so if something didn’t work consistently or wasn’t repeatable under fire, it got dumped. Immediately. End of story. Successful repeated application of a technique in combat was and is the only thing that counts.
Today, the POI I teach is Fundamentals of Gunfighting vs. Fundamentals of Marksmanship. Marksmanship proved to be the easiest technical element of gunfighting, honed with proven isolation drills and repped out consistently for sustainment. However it is the application of marksmanship, combined with immediate target discrimination and maneuver, that pays the bills. Entering a relative unknown and being able to immediately solve problems is the true hard skill that requires consistent good reps under oversight to improve, and that is the point of all of this. Create a path for improvement as a team and individual – because improving to the point where we kill the enemy and they don’t kill us is the whole reason we train.
