FN’s Five-Seven Pistol Receives Major Upgrade

Monday, June 13th, 2022

THE ULTIMATE PRECISION PISTOL IS
NOW OPTICS-READY
(McLean, VA – June 13, 2022) FN America, LLC is proud to introduce the all-new FN Five-seveN® MRD optics-ready pistol chambered in 5.7x28mm. After decades of trusted service with global militaries, law enforcement and civilian sport shooters, the FN Five-seveN receives a complete design update with a factory-milled slide to accept most micro red dot optics. Coupled with major upgrades to the frame and slide, the new FN Five-seveN MRD sets a new standard for optic-interoperability, control and accuracy.

“The FN Five-seveN pistol has been immensely popular since its introduction. Its original design capturing the performance of the FN-designed 5.7x28mm cartridge made it an instant success, and it’s positioned to do it yet again with the dramatic redesign of the FN Five-seveN MRD,” said Chris Cole, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for FN America, LLC. “With the addition of an integral optics mounting system on the slide, an already accurate pistol now redefines what handgun accuracy means. We’re truly excited to bring this new pistol to market with features our customers want in their favorite FN caliber.”

The FN Five-seveN MRD, like its predecessor, is a 5.7x28mm-chambered, delayed blowback-operated pistol. The internal, single-action-only hammer produces a clean and consistent trigger pull that breaks at approximately 6 pounds, with minimal take-up and a short reset. FN’s 4.8-inch cold hammer-forged barrel combined with the inherent benefits of the design and high velocity bottleneck cartridge produces a flat-shooting pistol with extremely low felt-recoil. Users can stay on target with accuracy and precision at extended ranges, unmatched by any other semi-auto handguns.

“When we embarked on this design update for the Five-seveN MRD, we focused on the core benefits our user base wants in a modern pistol,” said John Ryan, Director of Product Management for FN America, LLC. “The Five-seveN pistol was already extremely accurate and reliable, although there was untapped performance in the design and cartridge to bring forward. Milling the slide in the factory allows for immediate mounting of almost any MRD on the market, with improved ergonomics and controls, the Five-seveN MRD delivers more precision and versatility for the modern handgunner.”

Following FN’s optics-ready pistol tradition, the Five-seveN MRD’s optic mount consists of a series of plates that mate the optic to the slide. Just like FN’s 509 optics-ready pistols, users are able to mount a miniature red dot sight within minutes using the corresponding plates and screws provided with the pistol. The system is compatible with most common miniature red dot sights including the Leupold DeltaPoint Pro, Trijicon RMR, Vortex Optics, Burris FastFire series, Docter Optics and more. The three-dot photo luminescent sights glow in low light conditions, are adjustable for elevation and windage and co-witness with certain optics.

With newly enhanced slide serrations and extended cocking ridges at the rear of the slide, the Five-seveN MRD’s overall operability and user manipulations are vastly improved while the ergonomic changes to the frame’s backstrap allow for a more natural point of aim and better fit. A new stippled texturing on the grip frame along with more extensive front strap serrations improve grip consistency for complete control. The magazine release has also been enlarged and reshaped for intuitive control and rapid reloads. Carrying over from the original design are the 20-round standard magazine, safety selector located directly above the trigger, serrated trigger shoe and trigger guard.

The FN Five-seveN MRD is available in matte black or FN-signature flat dark earth (FDE) and ships in a zippered pistol case with two 20-round magazines and optics-mounting hardware required to mount an optic. To learn more about the FN Five-seveN MRD, please visit www.fnamerica.com.

Move – Sense – Strike: Rheinmetall Presenting Products, Systems and Capabilities at Eurosatory 2022 for the Digitized Battlefields of the Future

Saturday, June 11th, 2022

Eurosatory 2022, the most important defence show on the European mainland, takes place this year in Paris from 13 to 17 June. Under the motto “Move – Sense – Strike”, Rheinmetall will be on hand, presenting part of its extensive array of products, systems and activities for the digitized battlefields of the future. With an exhibition area of around 3,000 square metres, this will be Rheinmetall’s biggest-ever presence at Eurosatory. Here are some of the products making their debut at this year’s show:

Future Tanknology – KF51 main battle tank: The KF51 is the newest member of Rheinmetall’s family of tracked armoured fighting vehicles. Delivering dual-capability dominance, the platform sets new standards in every category – lethality, survivability, mobility, networkability and reconnaissance. Its 130mm main armament and other effectors endow the KF51 with superior firepower. The vehicle will be presented at a ceremony on 13 June at 14:00 hrs.

Rheinmetall Technology Cube: Now more than ever, defence technology systems are developed in close coordination with their future users. The Rheinmetall Technology Cube exploits cutting-edge technology, including augmented reality, to conduct a dialogue with users and procurement officials when developing next-generation combat vehicles. The aim is to rethink the future together – by integrating new kinds of drives, sensors, and subsystems into fully digitized, scalable vehicle platform concepts.

Airborne vehicle family: In cooperation with Mercedes-Benz and ACS Armoured Car Systems, Rheinmetall now offers a versatile, high mobility 4×4 vehicle family specially designed for light airmobile and special operations units. The vehicle system family will debut at Eurosatory.

Natter remote-controlled weapon station: Rheinmetall has developed a new family of remote-controlled weapon stations. Thanks to its high-performance sensors, modularity and independent stabilization, the Natter (“adder”) features excellent reconnaissance and engagement capabilities. Various versions of the Natter make it possible to arm tracked and wheeled armoured vehicles with a wide spectrum of effectors ranging from light machineguns to medium calibre cannon.

Unmanned systems and robotics: For the first time, Rheinmetall will be presenting the newly developed LUNA NG (Next Generation) unmanned aerial vehicle, designed for unmanned aerial reconnaissance, classification, and recognition of objects in real time. Rheinmetall will also be showing how various integrated, unmanned air-supported reconnaissance systems can reinforce the sensors of ground platforms and improve overall situational awareness. The Robotics-L walking robot and Mission Master models SP and XT demonstrate how robotics is already changing the modern battlefield. Robotics-L can carry out reconnaissance missions. The Mission Master SP vehicle is configured for a transporting cargo, while the XT is a designed for a fire support role with a launcher for loitering munitions.

Loitering munitions: These air-supported precision munitions combine the characteristics of drones and guided missiles. They enhance the ability of even small units to reconnoitre target zones from above, coupled with standoff, high-precision engagement of targets. Rheinmetall and its partner UVision have entered a cooperation agreement to market UV’s Hero family of loitering munitions in Europe. At Eurosatory, the two companies will be highlighting possibilities for integrating Hero LM systems into manned and unmanned vehicles.

In addition to these debuts, Rheinmetall will also be presenting various other products and projects. These include:

HX3 vehicle family: Rheinmetall’s new HX3 vehicle generation features improved protection, even better mobility, greater driving comfort and digital interface architecture, assuring heightened operational flexibility and abundant scope for future performance upgrades. At Eurosatory 2022, Rheinmetall’s wheeled self-propelled howitzer will be on display, mounted on a high mobility HX 10×10 chassis. The HX3 can also serve as the transport component for the Skynex air defence system.

Air defence: Mobile, modular, and scalable, ground-based air defence systems are gaining new importance now that NATO armed forces are focusing once again on defending national and allied territory and airspace. At Eurosatory, Rheinmetall is displaying a Boxer 8×8 wheeled armoured vehicle configured for an air defence role, topped with the Sykranger 30 turret and an integrated surface-to-air missile launcher. Also on show will be the Skynex air defence system, consisting of a 35mm Mk3 Revolver Gun, Multi Sensor Unit with AESA radar, and a Control Node 1 command centre, with a high-energy laser functioning as a future effector.

Force protection: Rheinmetall’s comprehensive expertise in the field of force protection ranges from individual passive ballistic solutions to advanced stand-off active protection systems for combat vehicles. Visitors to Eurosatory 2022 can inspect Rheinmetall’s StrikeShield, an integrated hybrid module for vehicles that combines active and passive protection technology.

Digitized battlefield: As a leading systems integrator, Rheinmetall possesses all the knowledge necessary for networking various entities on the digital battlefield of the future. At Eurosatory 2022, Rheinmetall will show how the interplay of sensors, effectors and human-machine interfaces can lift the “fog of war”. Rheinmetall will also be showcasing the current configuration of its Gladius 2.0 soldier system and how it can be networked with manned and unmanned vehicles and subsystems.

At Eurosatory 2022, furthermore Rheinmetall will be presenting its comprehensive expertise in practically every other capability category. These include weapons and ammunition for threat-commensurate, scalable application of force as well as innovative, networkable sensor systems for applications on land, at sea and in the air, in addition to high-performance simulation technology for top-of-the-line training. FN America – Mid Range Gas Gun

Friday, June 10th, 2022

During last month’s Modern Day Marine Expo we introduced you to FN America’s Mid Range Gas Gun candidates for USSOCOM’s ongoing program.

While SCAR definitely influenced the development of this rifle, a lot is new. It shares an aluminum extrusion upper receiver, modular butt stock and modular lower with the SCAR, but everything is different.

The team went out to the various SOF components and asked what they’d like if FN were to design a new gun. Mostly they heard the common criticisms of SCAR like the lack of non-reciprocating charging handle, proprietary magazines, and so on. FN set out to rectify those issues and more.

Chambered in 6.5 Creedmoor, the MRGG program called for two different weapons: a 14.5″ Assault version and a 20″ Sniper Support variant.

The weapon is modular and you can reconfigure barrel length or even caliber within three minutes by removing three bolts. The barrel and lower handguard come off as a unit. Bolts are now Torx spec rather than Hex to avoid stripping.

Additional modular components include the Forward Assist and Case Deflector along with the Ambidextrous Bolt Release. You can also swap out buttstock and pistol grip.

They re-engineered the lower receiver with a shorter distance between the grip and trigger than found on the SCAR. They also incorporated an AR-style rear charging handle as well as non-reciprocating side charging handles at either side. These can be removed by the shooter if desired.

Additionally, the lower receiver now accepts SR-25 pattern magazines and is made from aluminum. There are discussions of future caliber compatibility by producing a 5.56 lower like is used with the Mk17. All controls are ambidextrous. The gun incorporates a two-stage trigger developed in house.

The guns are both quite accurate. They are seeing 0.65 MOA for the Sniper model and .95 for the Assault. Recoil was extremely light, even for a rifle chambered in 6.5 CM and was very controllable on the full-auto setting of the Assault variant. Additionally, these rifles aren’t destroying optics and other enablers like we have seen with SCAR.

For this program, FN topped off their Cold Hammer Forged barrels with a HUXWRX suppressor.

The guns seen here are earlier prototypes and FN continues to refine the weapon. Hopefully, we’ll see more of this gun as it’s added to the FN lineup. They are also working on a name and hopefully they’ll unveil that soon as well.

FirstSpear Friday Focus: Pub Shorts V2

Friday, June 10th, 2022

Fathers Day is around the corner, FirstSpear’s American Made Pub Shorts are here to deliver.

The FirstSpear Pub Shorts feature a lightweight, breathable performance material blend that stretches and wicks away moisture.

“I was a little hesitant to order these because of the cost, but I’m glad I did. Totally worth it! Fit was right on target with my waist size. The adjustable waist band is a nice touch when carrying a IWB holster, allows for enough give and doesn’t feel like my shorts are busting at the seams. The performance blend material dries quickly and is comfortable to the touch. Not to mention they’re USA Made. From the gym, to the range, to a night out these will defiantly be my go to pair from now on.”

— Scott

The enhanced pockets are deep and conform to the body. These shorts are sewn with an 8.5” inseam and provide a stylish look without sacrificing performance.

The elastic waistband is sturdy and has a soft knit for an extremely comfortable feel against the body.

Check out FirstSpear for these and many more products for America’s Warfighter.
