Schrade MOE Multi-Purpose Demolition Tool

Friday, February 15th, 2019

Somehow, the Schrade MOE Multi-Purpose Demolition Tool escaped me when it came out in 2016.

MOE is a 14.75″ multi-purpose demolition tool, forged from heat treated, 1055 high carbon steel with a bending strength of 1843 lbs.

It features a five function head that includes:
-A fire axe
-A spine side hammer
-A beveled pry bar end
-An angled nail pull
-A 1-1/4″ spanner wrench / demolition claw

On the shaft there’s a main gas valve wrench.

The handle is wrapped with 550 paracord and there’s a flat pry bar with nail pull.

Liberty Dynamic – Enhanced Diversionary Device

Friday, February 15th, 2019

One of the coolest things at SHOT Show was something I didn’t even get to see because I attended several private Range days and it was exhibited by Liberty Dynamic at the Official Industry Range Day. The Enhanced Diversionary Device is much more than a “Stun Grenade,” it is actually a reloadable, digitally fused fuel air explosive device.

Little work has been done over the years to modernize Noise and Flash Diversionary Devices. Traditional devices are flammable and produce smoke as well as secondary frag from loose items being propelled during detonation. Over a decade ago, Sandia National Lab produced a developmental fuel air device, but it was never commercialized.

Liberty Dynamic was co-founded by former Recon Marine John Chapman.

Liberty Dynamic developed their own technology, the Enhanced Diversionary Device, a digital fuse FAE device which produces a thermobaric event using a binary energetic material. This means that it is not BATFE controlled. Update: Liberty Dynamic updated us with a clarification regarding BATFE oversight of the EDD. The energetic is not regulated in its binary form. However, once it is combined and attached to a fuse, it is, in fact, regulated.

Cartridges are reloadable. The combustible aluminum is atomized in free space, outside of the device, creating a dust cloud which when ignited produces a report of 175 dB and 9 million candela. However, unlike the output cap on current tech, the Enhanced Diversionary Device offers scalable output. As they increase the FAE event, it produces a more potent dB output.

Due to the combustion outside of the device, it remains cool and intact, ready to be reloaded.

The Smart Fuse enables a precise customizable detonation sequence. However, it is set at the factory, based upon user TTPs. Thanks to this digital fuse technology, you’ll get at least a hundred uses from the device. Additionally, tri-color LEDs indicate device condition. Finally, any deployment failure and the device renders safe in 60 seconds.

In addition to offering training systems, the Enhanced Diversionary Device can be configured for deployment from a sUAS.

Triggrcon 18 – S1-Wright-12 Breaching Shotgun from R&R Targets

Monday, July 30th, 2018

CMC Triggers displayed the S1-Wright-12 from R&R Targets. Although it’s a custom built design which has been used for 3-Gun competitions, this magazine fed, semi-auto, 12 ga shotgun is being evaluated by several SOF and LE organizations for breaching use.

I had the opportunity to fire it during Triggrcon Range day and it was quite controllable. If you’re familiar with an AR, you can shoot the S1-Wright-12. It offers the advantage of rapid magazine reloads (12 rounds) and ammunition changes. However, the bolt does not lock to the rear on the last shot like an AR. It was also fitted with a SilencerCo Salvo suppressor and I’m told that those currently evaluating the weapon use suppressed rifles and appreciate its utility.

The charging handle is mounted to the left side of the receiver and the top of the receiver features Mil STD 1913 rail.

The reason CMC Triggers was displaying the gun is that it is equipped with one of their triggers. During development, R&R Targets evaluated triggers from several different triggers, but the CMC AR10 trigger they selected was the only one which could stand up to the repeated hammering of the semi-auto 12 ga.

DSEI 17 – Atlas Devices Introduces Lightweight Assault Ladder From Pilot Innovations

Friday, September 15th, 2017

leading up to SOFIC we told you about the Lightweight Assault Ladder by Pilot Innovations. It is now available from Atlas Devices.  Weighing in at 18 lbs (8.1kg), the ladder extends to 18′ (5.5m). The wide rungs are spaced 15.4″ (39.2cm) apart. Although the working load is 350lbs (158.76kg) and intended for single user at a time, it can be used for bridging, although training is a must to learn how wide the spans may be.

The carbon fiber construction features positive step locks which are located under each step. Additionally, the ladder can be fitted with removable nylon shoulder straps.

Warrior West – Rocksmith Precision

Wednesday, April 19th, 2017

Rocksmith Precision is making quite a name for themselves in building specialized tools for the EOD community. However, at Warrior West I saw their Rocksmith 30:1 cutter and thought of several other uses for this amazing hand powered cutting tool such as breaching and technical survelliance applications. In a show filled with awesome kit, this is the coolest product I saw at the show.

That 30:1 in the name means exactly what it implies, offering a 30:1 mechanical advantage thanks to the design which allows the user to configure the handle in one of two ways (seen below). I used it to snip a chainlink like it was butter and I also used it to open up 14 gage material used in CONEXs. All of that with my hand. Plus, it will go right through welds, unlike power tools. Additionally, you can begin your cut with a simple 1/4″ entry hole. Currently, they offer two styles of swappable blades. One is for chainlink and the other is for sheetmetal.

If all of that wasn’t enough, it is 7″ long and weighs less than half a pound. That’s the kind of a tool you don’t want to leave behind.
