Otte Gear – Follow Up

The editor has been messing around with an Otte Alpine jacket for about 2 weeks now. Impressions? Comfy…Snug but not tight. Well designed; accommodates full range of motion. Its very well done and as we stated before, the fit is right on with military sizing. So what makes the Otte Gear Alpine jacket so special? Design and materials. They use a treated softshell fabric that sheds wind and rain as well as stains and abrasion and it breathes; breathes very well.

This technical stretch woven jacket is a great choice for movements in cool conditions. Its alpine cut fits well with climbing harnesses, packs, as well as armor and the hood is designed to be worn with a helmet. The chest pockets are well placed and the sleeve pockets are very generous but did not get in the way even when fully stuffed. Plus the jacket is made in the USA.

Kifaru PackLock Clothing

Kifaru, makers of some of the finest military packs on the face of the earth have hit another home run. Last year they tackled sleep systems with the Regulator Sleeping Bag System. Their Woobie is the best thing to happen to the Soldier since well, the poncho liner. Kifaru took teh Regulator technology one step further and created a 24/7 climate control system of clothing. Mel at Kifaru has been keeping us updated on the progress of this project and we have been anxiously awaiting its release after trying on some of the samples at SHOT 08 in Las Vegas.

They developed a system to literally lock the back of your garments into the packs suspension. It isn’t going to creep no matter how long you carry your pack.

A Moment of Silence for Dress Greens

Its been in the works for quite some time but according to a story by The Army Times released today on their website, the Army issued a message today announcing wear policy for the new blue Army Service Uniform. As we reported back in May, the shirt is white. Other additions include bloused jump boots, berets with the blue uniform, and a combat service identification badge. The combat service identification badge is a metal version of the former wartime shoulder sleeve insignia but worn on the right pocket.

The Editor brought home interesting literature from OR about the new Insect Shield treatment being applied to a variety of product lines. Word is that the developer of the Buzz Off TM line from Ex Officio struck out on his own and has licensed this technology to several companies. It works. Adventurers and explorers rely on Insect Shield garments to protect them from the onslaught of the insect world. Using a synthetic version of a natural repellent found in the Chrysanthemum, Insect Shield treatment lasts 70 washings.

OR Update – Cordura Introduces Baselayer Fabric

At OR, Cordura expended a lot of energy promoting their new undergarment fabric developed jointly by Invista and Cyberknit. And for good reason, this Nylon/Cotton blend is comfortable. According to Cordura, the advantages of this new fabric are plenty. It won’t melt or drip like polyester, absorbs moisture quickly and effectively, and transports sweat away from the body. It is supposed to dry 2.5 times quicker than 100% cotton and as you know Cordura is highly abrasion resistant.

The shirts are manufactured by the Canadian firm Tac Wear and are available exclusively from Ranger Joe’s.

They are available in M, L, XL, 2X and comes in Black, Olive Drab, and Tan. Matching boxers are also available.

Name That Jacket Contest Winners Announced

Marie Meunier of Wild Things is proud to announce the winners of the Name That Jacket Contest.

The Basic version will be named the “Smoking Jacket” to pay tribute to its FR qualities, stylish looks, and comfort. The name was submitted by Tyr Symank.

The FR Jacket will now be called the “Max” in honor of the lovable scamp Max, from the book, “Where the Wild Things Are”. The name was submitted by Marshall Smith.

Both winners will each receive a Smoking Jacket. The winners will be contacted by Wild Things for delivery of their prizes.

Crye Precision Multicam Visual Spectrum

A lot of people have been asking about MulticamVS â„¢. Its is used in Propper’s Multicam products and has the same proven visual performance as the original MulticamÂ®. The only difference is that MulticamVS â„¢ is optimized for the visible spectrum. Notice, we said visual spectrum. It does not have the same NIR values as the original MulticamÂ® and was designed for applications which donâ€™t require NIR protection.
