US Space Force Guardians To Begin Wearing Distinctive Rank Insignia Soon

Wednesday, February 9th, 2022

Late last year the US Space Force unveiled their new rank structure for enlisted Guardians.

Earlier this week, Chief Master Sergeant of the Space Force Roger A Towberman shared a video updating Guardians on uniform initiatives. The main issue is implementation of rank chevrons for the OCP uniform which is the duty uniform for most Guardians. Like the Army and Air Force, the USSF rank insignia is worn centered on the chest. The service is shooting for May availability.

As for service dress updates, initially, CMSSF Towberman said that Guardians will continue to wear their Air Force blues but that they are going to “Space it up a little bit” with distinctive buttons, name tag and collar devices.

Below you can see CSO, General John W. “Jay” Raymond wearing the Space Force collar device.

A completely new service dress is still in the works. Seen below is a prototype which debuted at last September’s Air Force Associations Air, Space and Cyber Conference.

Supply chain issues will likely delay its fielding once everything is finalized.

Norway’s Oskar Pedersen AS Wins Nordic Combat Uniform Contract

Wednesday, February 9th, 2022

After years of trials a winner has been selected in the Nordic Combat Uniform program which aims to provide a common uniform system for the armed forces of Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden. This is the first time the four nations have let a single contract under their Nordic Defense Cooperation (NORDEFCO) framework.

Earlier this week FMA the Defense Material Agency (Forsvarsmateriell) signed a seven-year contract with Norway’s Oskar Pedersen AS worth up to 425 million Euros. The Norwegians plan to purchase 15,000 uniform systems at 15000 kroner each. Oskar Pedersen AS will provide the clothing and Layers AS will serve as project manager.

With designs to accommodate both male and female troops, components include garments for cold-wet environments as well as Desert and Jungle settings.

Subcontractors include Siamidis SA, which is responsible for technical solutions and manufacturers of combat suits and garments for cold and rain, W.L Gore & Associates GmbH is the system’s technical supplier and Aclima AS & Woolpower AB, which is responsible for wool underwear.

Although the Nordic militaries will adopt the same layout of uniforms, each of the countries will procure versions of the outerwear in their national camouflage patterns.

This is a joint procurement carried out by the Danish Ministry of Defense’s procurement and logistics organization (DALO), the Finnish Defense Logistics Command (FDFLOGCOM), the Norwegian Defense Materiel Administration (NDMA) and the Swedish Defense Materiel Administration (FMV). Although Iceland is a member of NORDEFCO, they are not participating in the NCU program.

Deliveries should begin as early as the end of this year.

Crye Precision was one of the competitors in this program and their offerings are being commercialized as the Alpine Terrain Operations line.

WHO

Development Never Stops Alpha: A team that combines specialists in clothing technology, with those from the Military.

Marcel Geser is the head of the development team. In recent years he has been the man that leading outdoor clothing manufacturers have turned to when their in-house development team could not solve a task. For this he has won ISPO and ECO awards.

Tim Vetter is the contact person for government and the military. He was involved in logistics for the German Special Operations Forces and later the managing director of the most innovative manufacturer of tactical equipment in Germany.

Together they form the backbone of DNS Alpha.

WHAT

Their collective mission is to provide the most demanding end-users on the planet with the best clothing possible.

As a licensed partner of Gore-Tex, Cordura and Outlast, DNS Alpha is able to offer highly specialized fabrics. When no suitable fabrics are available, we develop them with our partners. Examples of those are an elastic FR fabric and the toughest merino quality on the market.

In the DNS Alpha clothing system, all layers are perfectly coordinated. So your size is always your size.

DNS Alpha works in constant close contact with their end-users. This already includes highly specialized units where materials and design are tailored to their specific needs.

Also, having our own sample production capability in Germany makes it possible to react quickly to feedback, and to produce new prototypes, custom-made products and small series in short timeframes that our customers demand and need.

WHERE

DNS Alpha currently operates from three locations:
the head office is in Switzerland, and both, the design studio and sales office that is currently responsible for Europe and the Middle East, are located in and near Munich, Germany.
DNS Alpha works with selected manufacturers, primarily in Europe for its current production. And is currently looking at several production facilities beyond that, such as in the USA to offer all clients production where they want it.

DNS Alpha is currently available through a worldwide network of dealers which can be found HERE.

The companies in the network have many years of experience in selling high end Military, Law Enforcement and Outdoor brands to their respective end-users.

WHEN

The DNS Alpha team not only has over a decade of cooperation with the leading brands in the outdoor industry behind them, but also military experience, ranging from personal deployments to working with end-users on innovation and procurement. With each project, new experiences were gained and further technologies developed. Over this period, DNS Alpha has evolved and created innovations that are years ahead of its competitors.

WHY

DNS Alpha knows from experience that every task and mission brings with it special requirements in terms of the cut of an item, and the materials used. The solution starts with using the right materials, and then tailoring that to the intended use. When a material that fits the use does not exist, DNS Alpha is in the position to make that material, together with our partners. We believe that material and product development should come from the same source to create real meaningful innovations.

Anyone who has tried and tested a DNS Alpha product will notice the difference compared to all others.

Platatac’s Tet Offensive

Monday, January 31st, 2022

In late 2019 deep in the Platatac development skunk works we were made aware of some upcoming adversary training requirements by various units around the world and the demand for a low volume, high quality, battle proven modern combat uniform in a non-issue camouflage pattern.

It was a perfect fit for Platatac with a long history of developing and producing short run camouflage patterns for previous clients such as Australian SOCOMD with digitised Auscam & Marine Cam and numerous projects with UK MOD and many more that will never see the light of day.

The obvious choice for this was Tigerstripe, and so the quest to bring this project to life began. Tigerstripe came to prominence during the Vietnam War but was never an official US issue item, personnel permitted to wear it at first had their uniforms custom-made by local Vietnamese tailors so it was a perfect fit for what we had planned.

What started out as a need for OpFor combat uniforms quickly snow balled in complexity as the product range expanded and we tried to navigate the ever changing challenges of Covid-era logistics and continuous unexpected delays along the way.

The next challenge was to find a high quality fabric that would be up to the rigors of the abuse the end users expect our products to handle, although Platatac is well known and for our ability to develop and digitise patterns in house the decision was made to expedite the project in early 2021 and partner with Flimmuur Tactical UK who was well down the path developing a Tigerstripe pattern with a nod to the classic faded look of the original Vietnam era pieces but on modern ripstop NyCo.

Fast forward to the anniversary of the Tet Offensive in 1968 and Platatac is proud to present an exclusive collaboration with Flimmuur UK in partnership with OPTactical in the US, bringing to life a reproduction of a classic weathered Tigerstripe pattern in a modern tactical uniform.
